When I was a kid in the 80's I read Groo The Wanderer comic books and played video games on my Commodore 64. In this video, I bring my two childhood hobbies together and create 8-Bit Groo pixel art on the C64!

Groo is a parody of sword and sorcery comics like Conan the Barbarian, obviously. He wanders from village to village with his trusty dog Rufferto (who adores Groo, BTW), trying to find work suitable for a warrior. The thing about Groo is that he's exceptionally stupid. A lot of people try to exploit Groo, but these plans usually backfire in hilarious ways, while Groo is being oblivious to what is actually happening around him. Usually, Groo leaves the village in a state of complete chaos. Recurring themes are Groo getting angry for hearing called certain names, Groo being hungry, Groo defeating anyone he faces with almost no effort, Groo doing the opposite of what the one who hired him had actyalky intended, leaving Groo saying: "Did I err?“ There are some recurring characters, like Sage, a wise man who often tries to talk some sense to Groo, Minstrel who sings songs about Groo, Weaver and Scribe, who write tales of Groo's exploits, Captain Ahax, a pirate captain who always loses a ship when Groo is around. Sergio Aragones created the character, but for a long time, the comic book has been done by a team of Aragones together with writer Mark Evanier and letterer Stan Sakai. Sakai himself is the writer and artist of Usagi Yojimbo, the character Samurai Warrior on C64 is based on. Weaver and Scribe are based on Evanier and Sakai. Also, Evanier is known as a writer for several TV shows, like various incarnations of Garfield on TV. Groo has changed publishers several times, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, to name a few, but the core team has remained, the rights remaining with the creator Aragones.

We have lived a similar life. I first saw the Dragon cover Groo #2 on a spinner rack in the town where I grew up and I was immediately transfixed. I knew it was Sergio from MAD and I bought a copy and sought out all the PC back issues straight away. Continued collecting well into the late 90's and still have almost all of my original comics to this day. Sergio and MAD inspired me to become a cartoonist. I studied his work deeply growing up, as I had no art tutors around me. Mad and GROO comics were my teachers. I also have a Commodore 64 next to me and do a bit of pixel art. (It was my first computer. Actually this one isn't completely original, I own an Ultimate 64e FPGA recreation of the C64, which sits inside an original Breadbin case / keyboard, hooked up via RGB to a 1084s monitor.) Very cool channel. I never thought I'd see such a Sergio / Groo fanatic as I've been. Ha!

Wow! You’re right, many similarities! I was always the kid in school drawing, but I didn’t study art in school (or continue to practice and push myself) instead I relied on natural ability… which only takes one so far. 😀 All my Commodore stuff is original (I’ve got too much, really) but a friend has the U64 Elite and it seems really good. I still prefer creating on the C64 to playing games. I like making custom character sets and sprites, PETSCII art and programming (6510 ML) 😀

I came here from that "8-Bit Show And Tell" video, and I have to say, I had only vaguely heard of Groo either through some Instagram page I followed that showed photos of covers and pages of various vintage comics, or someone I follow on Twitter who once showed some of their vintage comic pickups. Cool! This is reminding me of when I imagined drawing Wander Over Yonder fan art on some kind of Apple Newton based device, mainly tieing in with a fanfiction idea I ended up forgetting up until typing this comment. Edit: I forgot Koala Painter could be used with a joystick instead of a Koala Pad graphics tablet.

@@GrooTube To that one machine I used to have...it miraculously multiplied...;-) I'm also a big fan of Petscii art, but because I'm more of a programmer than an artist, I recently wrote a converter that runs on a PC and converts any image into Petscii. The limitation to one background color really hurts here. You can get decent results, but you have to tweak the source image somewhat for that in most cases.

I'm a Doodle guy, so I'm all about traditional HIRES mode. Multi-color mode is muddier and less detailed to me. Still, I wish that Doodle let us use sprites. If we could overlay and underlay sprites? We'd be able to do pretty much ANYTHING. As it was, I enjoyed doing manual sprite animation in Doodle by assigning custom sprite stamps and just hitting 1-9 to cycle the animation frames. Too bad it was just a silly "hack" rather than a true animation feature. Regardless, I've got to admit your multi-color mode art is wonderful. (I prefer how it looks before the dithered shading, though - multi-color dithering is just too blocky for my tastes.)

@@GrooTube What sort of game were you thinking? The only Groo game I'm familiar with is a card game where you don't actually play Groo. You try to build towns and Groo is a "hot potato" walking disaster that hampers your efforts. Of course, we'd rather be playing Groo himself. I'm imagining an overhead game where you basically just turn into a whirl of blades and stuff when your sprite touches enemies and they go flying off on contact. The game has inertia physics like an overhead Marble Madness, and the goal is to try and wipe out all of the enemies in a screen as fast as possible. You ideally dodge arrows from archers, but if you get hit they just slow you down rather than seriously kill you.
@GrooTube
@GrooTube 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a neat idea for a Groo game. I haven’t out too much thought into it. Perhaps a side scrolling, one-button affair. Just get as far as you can into the fray game. It could almost be a parody of the Usagi game. Or, in a totally different direction, an overhead strategy game, along the same line as the card game, trying to defend against Groo.
@IsaacKuo
@IsaacKuo 3 жыл бұрын
@@GrooTube Yeah, a simple one button game is good because it would be straightforward to develop and get right into simple mindless fun. Are you familiar with D.R.O.D., or Deadly Rooms of Death? The main character is very Groo-like, and when you really get a fray going he starts grunting with each kill with a lot of satisfaction. However, D.R.O.D. is quintessentially a precise puzzle game, which punishes you for the slightest error in thinking. This _feel_ is utterly opposite of Groo. It works in D.R.O.D. because it's a funny ironic tension between the mindless muscle-headed character and the player who must use razor sharp wits. So that's really the design challenge - the game has to be fun but NOT involve particularly intellectual thinking. I mean, Groo is actually kinda clever in his own way, so it's okay for it to be more than just mindless button mashing, but still ...
