The appearance and movement of hair are so interdependent processes that they cannot be done separately in most cases. How to make hair look amazing and not ruin everything later? :))) How not to break the visual appearance of hair by simulation? What should be done at the grooming stage to effectively use simulation later for artistic image improvement? Different hairstyles have different problems and require different approaches to solve the problems. I will show my workflow of creating different types of hair and talk about how Houdini helps me to solve the above problems due to its procedural nature.
Andriy Bilichenko is a visual artist, owns both the latest digital technologies and methods of traditional oil painting and drawing. Honorary Chairman of the defunct Order of Houdini Fighters.

Thank you, I like your hair intersection solution at 19:47. In grooming we need the ability to lift roots... I'm sure its coming.

He is talking russian, but his translator speaks ukrainian and he understand him well, so highly likely he is from ukraine, because russians can't understand ukrainian)

@@andriybilichenko first I want to congratulate you for caring for this type of hair. I'm studying afro texture, and i only got dismissiveness or outright hostility, i don't have this type of hair, but I don't see hair like that, it's lacking I nuances, had to create a whole new hair classification called stress diffusion on my side, currently trying to create a new kind of pixel shader raytracing in recurrent space to lessen the cost. Not to be rude, but people don't really understand or study afro hair texture and they kinda look like poor approximation of the real thing, typically lacking in spiral perversion or understanding how the hair locks and puff mecanically, the physics is off as they don't have the bounces and dynamic for stiff sticks which is bad, they end up looking more like straight hair locks of white rasta. My tone was probably overly harsh. But to be frank the only people who are remotely interested about making afro type of hair, as an object, are eastern European and asian, so the speaker being Russian don't surprise me, everybody else give you uncomfortable stare of confusion. Black people don't think of hair as objects but as relation to themselves and the world, geeking out about the technical details generally is met with confusion, they focus mostly on the hairstyle as a whole, and expression of culture and context, as a way to self heal historical aggression because of the hair. It's been painful to just explore the basics as no one can really help you and bad practices just perpetuate.

Afro hair sounds a bit like a generalisation anyway to me. There's no "afro" texture that works for all every curl is different depending by the thickness of the hair, how tight the curls are and the twist of every single hair adding fizz and length and dryness and products applied they'd look completely different and yet categorised all as afro by whites... you'd have fun going to a hair salon for a week 😁
@NeoShameMan
@NeoShameMan 11 ай бұрын
@@sazacat2613 that's true for all hair bro, but we are talking in term of rendering, also I'm not white, I'm caraibean. If you want to generalize hair you have to start with the tightest curl, sheen is a material aspect, lighting depend on the cross section, so far we only have the round shape model, called marchner, afro type of hair are oval, the least explored area, mathematically, is physics for afro type, ie why the hair puff, how it behave wet, and specific stuff like spiral perversion and how they form under stress, for simulation, even as approximation, the closest one is the central core approximation from pixar. The way generalize isn't by making a single way to make hair, but to find parameters we can tune to move from one texture to another, which is how everything is done in 3d, gold to skin are different specular, roughness, subsurface, translucency and albedo parameters even though they look vastly different. We don't have such framework for hair that cover all hair texture. Don't assume people background too that's rude.
