@tk rubey Dip her nail in flour or cornstarch and press the nail hard from side to side to stop the bleeding... If you continue to quick a dog (which is what it is called when you make her bleed) it will only get worse. Try cutting off tiny bits every 3 - 5 days and the vein will move back from the end of the nail. Sounds like you are cutting off too much and waiting too long in between. Also, look into getting a DREMEL tool to do nails. It is a file on a motorized tool that grinds rather than cuts the nails back. They are smoother and the dust created will stop bleeding if you happen to get to close to the vein. Be careful with the DREMEL if your dog has long hair on its feet, the hairs will get caught in the spinning tool and it will be ripped out, so cut back the hair if it is long enough to catch....

Thank you so much. I get very depressed and neglect my dogs nails as it feels like such a huge chore... This is a lousy excuse.. I have not taken my dog to the groomer because I love him, but dont want to look like I abuse my dog as his nails were reeeally bad... I have successfully fixed his curled nails thanks to you and I will be scheduling him an appointment every month with a friend who has her own dog grooming business. I was really nervous Id get reported or something if anyone saw them. He's a happy pup with a loving home. I must do better for him.

Trust me, youre not the only fur baby owner whos babys nails were long...for whatever reason. I too am 1 of those fur moms whos embarrassed & stressed by it as my own health issues dont always afford me the ability to take my pups in regularly. There are some parents who never take their dogs, Im sure youre harder on yourself than your groomer is about it. Theyve probably seen worse, so were not that bad right?! 😂 Tbh Im the well intentioned fur mom who says TO the groomer & afterwards to myself how Im gonna do it every mo. Its also not easy as my 2 of my chihuahuas HATE getting their nails done, my other 1 is deaf+ blind which is a challenge of its own. Also every good groomer weve found over the yrs either closed or left which sucks. Just an FYI your vets office will do them usu by a vet tech so its not expensive & for me alot less stress bc I trust them. Good luck!

I completely understand the depression and how it makes anything and everything almost unbearable. I am guilty of letting my depression get the best of me . By doing so I really only neglected my dog and that actually made me even more depressed. I let it go way to long and now he’s paying the price. After the love of my life passed away I just shut down. I’m still incredibly depressed but, realize my best friend (my chow of 14 years ) shouldn’t have to pay the price. So little by little I’m trying to get his nails and hair back to where they should be. He’s never been good about letting me groom him or cut his nails unfortunately. But, ten minutes a few times a week so he doesn’t get overwhelmed is the route I started taking. I am so ashamed of myself for letting this go for as long as I did. I find myself talking to him as I’m doing his nails or hair apologizing the entire time. Sorry for the novel . I hope things are looking up for you . ❤

It’s not always a sign of neglect. Some owners don’t know how to trim their pups nails and some pups are fussy. My pup is fussy AND has dark black nails. Try using a dremel. It’s much easier. I have a Shiba Inu and i can just touch the clippers to his nail and he goes crazy. The dremel is much easier and even tho he still doesn’t like it, I don’t worry about him moving and clipping too far.

My dogs run for their lives so I can only do 1 or 2 nails at a time. Saw an awesome video/tip if you are afraid to go too short or they have black nails... use your phone and turn on the flashlight under the nail and you can see the “pink” so as not to trim too close. Hope that helps someone!

I can’t thank you enough for this tip. First, it gave me the confidence to even try cutting my dogs nails knowing that I can see I’m not going to make the nail bleed. Second, it really did work. I wish you could've talked about gradual trimming for dogs whose quicks are longer. I trim my friends' dogs' nails and when they are too long must do a 3 week series of cutting to give the quicks time to recede so I can trim more until they are the ideal length. Too many people think it's ok to slice through that sensitive nerve and just put styptic on the nail to stop the bleeding. That's *SO* painful for the poor dog and leads to extreme fear of getting nails cut. And understandably so!
@taniele84
@taniele84 10 ай бұрын
I’m going through this now. I didn’t know that the quick can do that. I was going by the length of the quick to determine when cut his nails, but the quick was always at the ends every time I checked finally I’m like something is up. So I started reading and learned that they over grow. He’s kinda my adopted dog. My roommate is neglectful. She kinda just gave up, but she still pays for his food, so I adopted him and he’s my big love bug now, he’s such a good boy. I got him a wheelchair for his bad hips, he’s St. Bernard and Great Dane mix, and he’s struggling a lot walking, I do everything I can to make these last couple of years his happiest. But I’ve never had a dog before, not my own, and I had no idea the quick could over grow and become the length of the nail itself, and now I’m so afraid of hurting him and trying to figure how to recede it. There’s no where to cut except around the quick. But I worry that would make it so that the quick sticks out more when he’s walking etc. I dunno. Sorry lol. Seeing your comment gives me hope. Ty for sharing!

Quick stop is a lifesaver when you NEED IT though. the goal is to not quick them AT ALL. i always tell my techs to start trimming slowly when cutting black nails because im not even 100% confident in myself when trimming black nails.. i go slow tho and if i feel like i really can’t do it, ill either resort to a nail dremel or just ask a bather for help.

This was similar to a German Shepherd I adopted. She was an outside doge before I got her and the owners never clipped her nails because they were worn down on the ground. What they didnt realize though was that her doclaws jest kept growing. They had grown right over and into the pads. I took her to the vet because I wasnt comfortable doing them myself. Good thing I did to, the pads bled when they clipped and removed the nails. Poor Bella took it like a champ though, no fighting or crying

New subscriber! Thanks for the video. Last fall I had brain surgery to remove a benign tumor I've had for 10 years. While recovering, my dog hadn't been to the vet since February and her nails got extremely long. I'm doing so-so and will be taking her to the vet in a couple days. (I still can't hold my head down for long). I say this to the people making rude comments, that unforeseen circumstances do happen, and things have to be put off until times are better, as in my case.

My grandmother's dog had the same problem. What I did was I'd set time aside where I could REALLY take my time, and I'd cut a nail, give her half a treat. (Gooberlicious works wonders for this) Give her time to collect, cut a nail, treat. Now, it does turn into a lot of treats in the beginning, but once she started relaxing about it, I started backing off the treats. No fear now. She'll let me have at it, one treat when she's done, no big deal at all. :)

Because he was doing the white nails first. White nails are actually translucent, so you can SEE the pink quick through them. Then after cutting the white ones and determining the length of her quicks, he took a chance on the black ones, knowing they’d be approximately the same. But if it’s a dog you’ve never groomed and ALL the claws are solid black, then you can’t just hack off that much, no matter how long the nails are, because the quicks can sometimes grow almost as long as the nail. So in that case, he’d have to slice off little bits at a time until he can start seeing the dot inside the pulp, which is the end of the quick. The more frequently you do that, the faster the quicks start to recede until eventually you’re able to cut the claws nice and short.

With all of the COVID-19 stuff I've been trying to bone up on how to groom my dogs myself and your videos are THE BOMB! Thanks so much! I have 2 rescue dogs, both from awful situations. One is a five year old poodle terrier mix named Maddie. She came from a puppy mill situation where 30+ dogs were seized. She was about a year old and pregnant when she was seized from the "owner." She was fostered and had her puppy (which died the next day), then spayed, and we adopted her. The other is a fourteen year old Bichon mix named Buddy. Another seizure situation of over a dozen dogs, all male, probably used for stud purposes. We got him when he was about ten years old. The Winnipeg Humane Society think he'd never been outside of a kennel till he was rescued. Bud didn't even know how to play and even now I can count the number of times I've seen him do a play bow on both hands! Both have come a LONG way since we got them. Your videos give great tips on equipment and handling of the dogs while grooming. I can't thank you enough!

I said it before and I'll say it again. You are so gentle and wonderful with these dogs really. I love watching your videos. I have an eight month old toy poodle which I started clipping his nails very early but now he is becoming increasingly difficult to cut. I had my daughter hold him today but seems to pull his leg back just as I'm ready to snip. It's very frustrating. He's really a sweet dog and smart. Any suggestions?

Thank you so much for your kind words..Maybe you can try doing one,or two nails at a time, just to shorten the process, and do another one or two the next day..let me know if that helps..

My puppy likes to pull her foot away too ☺️. The other day, we tried having her stand on the table at face level with me (as I'm sitting in a chair), and she was a lot more calm that way. We could hold her more loosely and I think it made her less nervous. This way I can also look at the nails straight on and see that I'm not getting close to the quick. Hope this helps anybody with a foot-pulling dog😉.

Thanks so much for the video. It really helps! I'm going to commit to clipping my Bella's (poodle/bichon) nails once a week until they get to a nice length that isn't tapping the ground. They're not too bad, just a little longer than I think they should be. Unfortunately Bella has hind dew claws that curl so tightly that there's just simply no room to get any sort of nail clippers (guillotine or scissor) between the claw and the pad from any angle. In this case I've been using a manual nail file (metal one so it shouldn't wear out) to slowly file the nails down. Yet at the vet's office they did it so quickly and i forgot to ask how, so maybe I should see if there's clippers that don't have such huge hooks at the end. The nail file works well, it's just time consuming and she hates her feet being touched even after all these years of grooming and trimming, so if I could make it speedier, I would haha

Rudy you are so gentle and so precious. Your cute little client had full trust in you. I am so impressed. I am so nervous I will cut my dogs veins as their nails are black. Would you recommend soaking the paws a while first before cutting to soften the nails. I find my dogs nails slightly brittle. I love your channel. Thank you so much Rudy 🐾

Thank you so much for your kind comment..I would not recommend soaking the nail,as it will soften it up,and make it even more sensitive..I would start by just tipping small amounts off,until your dog, and yourself become more comfortable with it..I hope it helps..thank you

@onpsxmember
@onpsxmember 4 жыл бұрын
Show him the muzzle. It gets far worse if he knows they can get around it. Spend time on making your dog comfortable with touching the paws, later on making it fine to touch them with the clipper, even later to deal with pressure on the nail. Most dogs have zero problems with the actual cutting, but it's all in their head. Don't let your dog stand up right when you're done, but calm further, give treats and pat.

About 4-5 of my dogs nails touch the floor. I randomly got disabled when he turned 4. Nobody helps me. Not with my med expenses, cleaning, day to day, my dog. Nothing. 0 help. My Dad gives me money bc I do a tiny Bit of work for him but 80% of my income still goes to my medical expenses. It’s not neglect, I am suffering greatly and I’m not giving up my best friend. Is there actually a nonprofit to help disabled people with their dogs? Can someone take him to the vet? Y’all in the comments act like people will step up to help us. WHO???

@@Julia_BH There are charities that can help. What's available to you will depend on what country and area you live in. You could try phoning the local vets and asking if they know of schemes that could help someone in your situation. Or ask an advice cell that refers to other charities. Good luck.
