Since the doctor in the old show was involved in setting up UNIT the group of people responsible for dealing with alien threats, I always assumed he set up the buffalo password thing in the 70s.

The doctor said every time it's the same password, which makes me wonder how many times you need to enter it. Because if it's 8 times, then the password would be the sentence "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo"

The Slitheen can fit inside their disguises because of the collars around their neck. These are actually compression field devices, which shrinks them enough to fit inside. However, because this causes pressure on the disguise (remember that they're close to 8 foot or 2.4m), there's a gas exchange, which is why they fart excessively. It's not actually farting, that's the air escaping. That's why they can only fit inside big humans, because otherwise the disguise would rip and tear. And yes, the people who they make disguises out of are most certainly dead.
@Rocket1377
@Rocket1377 3 ай бұрын
The collars also share the same power source, linking them together. That's why all the Slitheen got electrocuted simultaneously when the Doctor attached that shock device to the collar.

The family dinamic between Rose and Jackie is very interesting and gives another layer to the travels, because this could be so simple, just you and a travelling companion seeing stuff and having fun adventures, but the reality is, people close to us will miss our company and sometimes we will miss their company as well. This gives the story a lot more weight and I really appreciate it. Great reaction, you're very fun to watch stuff with. Also, I really like that moment where the Doctor is talking about "standing up and making a decision, because no one else will". Makes you think about inaction and the consequences of it for certain situations.

One thing they definitely did better in the new series than the old one was showing the effect it had on the Doctor's travelling companions - how it affected their families, how it affected them, how hard it is for them to give up on the travels. Makes it feel more grounded (as grounded as it can be when you're talking about travelling through time and space in a wooden box, anyway...)

Notice the Slitheens use of the claim of "weapons of mass destruction which could be launched in 45 seconds" a topical reference at the time to the dodgy claim that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction which could be deployed in 45 minutes made a few years earlier.

ROSE: Do it. DOCTOR: You don't even know what it is. You'd just let me? ROSE: Yeah. JACKIE: Please, Doctor. Please. She's my daughter. She's just a kid. DOCTOR: Do you think I don't know that? Because this is my life, Jackie. It's not fun. It's not smart, it's just standing up and making a decision because nobody else will. ROSE: Then what're you waiting for? DOCTOR: I could save the world but lose you. I love that scene. Even though they haven't been travelling long together, it shows how much Rose trusts him and how much The Doctor cares about Rose.

This type of dialogue with this set up episodes really sells what Doctor Who is most of the time. A seemingly silly plot about farting goofy looking aliens who took over the govt. bent on nuking the world with somewhat comical looking CGI and passable practical effects, and then amidst all that there are these moments of brilliant pathos ridden dialogue that seem to belong to some more serious show. Yet it still all works together… and it’s fantastic

17:15, yeah Doctor & Companions still age during TARDIS travel. Like in the Classic era, two companions, called Jamie & Zoe were forced to leave, being returned to their own times with their memories of travelling with the Doctor erased, by the Timelords. In the Expanded Universe, Zoe later learnt she was two years older than she should be & by proxy Jamie was 4 years older than he should be (both having spent those years travelling with the Doctor).
@TheSpectre223
@TheSpectre223 3 ай бұрын
I think one of the saddest things about Jackie is that scene right there when she walks Rose to the TARDIS. The whole time they come into frame Jackie is talking about all these things that she'll do to better herself, like getting a better job and improving the quality of men she has around, because it's like she blames herself for Rose leaving. She's thinking that Rose is going because Jackie can't give her a good enough life back here. And it's sad because for all her faults, Jackie loves her daughter and only wants what's best for her. We saw that with the leaflets when Rose was "missing", where Jackie's clearly been running that campaign by herself from home, and even in the first episode where she was going out of her way to try to find some compensation money after the Doctor blew up Rose's job.

I think that they mean fire escapes from individual rooms. Fire escapes tend to only be accessed from the corridors in most UK buildings. Specially in a block of flats like the one Jackie and Micky live in. Front door is usually the only in and out of their apartments. Not even a balcony to escape onto either.

Of all the truly nutty things in Who the missile guidance thing is actually completely realistic. Cruise missiles are honestly a bit bananas in their ability to maneuver, change course mid air, hit a single moving vehicle after being launched from 200 miles away, that sort of madness. Real life is as terrifying as fiction on that score.

There was a support website for UNIT (with fake articles) went live with the prior episode. We finally found out what the defence page was for - you could arm a missile in an animation.😂 That website nearly got the BBC taken to the International Court of the Hague though. Falslely declaring something representing the United Nations is against a Geneva convention. It was renamed the UNified Intelligence as a result.

My one gripe on the episode is the ending. The way the slitheen are defeated is, in an odd way, anti-climactic. (Yes I know, they were literally blown up ......... but still.) I did appreciate the "ten seconds" moment, which added weight to the Rose's absence from her native time and place.

This episode is a direct metaphor for the British arguments about entering the Iraq War. "Massive weapons of destruction" is a variant of the "weapons of mass destruction" that Iraq was supposed to have. Even the fatness of the aliens is part of the metaphor - the outside force arguing for war was the US, and one negative stereotype of Americans is obesity.

Back in 2005 passwords were far simpler. No symbols or letters for most people. I’d suspect the military had more complex passwords but given the doctors history with UNIT I expect he planted that password to override everything years ago.

The Doctor was being unfair at the end, making Rose choose in the moment - _of_ _course_ they could have stayed for tea, he's got a time machine! BUT he has lost his entire world, and he doesn't want to be reminded that other people still have a family and a home because he can't bear it. He keeps it all at arm's length so he doesn't have to think about it. Maybe when he's further along in the grieving process that might change and he'll "do domestic", but that could take a long time. We'll have to wait and see.

I wish they would come back when they say, and also that the humans living on the Tardis would age more slowly/live longer.
@Rocket1377
@Rocket1377 3 ай бұрын
It would be the reverse of that. If the Doctor brought Rose back to the exact time she left after spending years travelling with him, she would be older than she is supposed to be. That's probably why the TARDIS returms at a later date so that Rose doesn't noticeably become older than she should be in her own time period. I never liked the idea that travellers in the TARDIS don't age, it makes no sense. Time Lords are immortal, but humans are not. It's one of the reasons why he can never spend his entire life with a human companion.

This is a really minor thing but I thought it best to let you know if you didn't know already. This portion of the show is referred to as "*series* one" rather than "season one" (Normal British TV thing) For most shows it wouldn't make a difference, but for Doctor Who specifically people use "season" to find the "classic who" stuff, and something more modern than what you're watching now too, so not labelling it "series" one may make it not show up in searches for "series one", and bury it way down low in results for "season one" because when people search for that they're usually looking for something different.
