Talking more about the USA's habit of killing African, Latin-American, and Asian people as a means of furthering corporate gains. All you had to do was get elected democratically and stand up to US imperialist weight-pushing and before you knew it, a coup had been CIA-financed and a brutal criminal installed as your replacement while you rot in a shallow grave. This is the fate of most of south america, where giving control to venal crooks has given us a landscape soaking in blood and literally ablaze. So America is a land driven by greed and violence. Roosevelt was engaged in leading the free world against the Germans and the Empire of Japan, and knew he was the best person to lead that fight to the detriment of his health. This display of just good manners and good conversation is very good entertainment just by itself.

Sean Cottrell - Yeah, Chomsky was such a jerk, confusing the issue with the facts the way he did. Up until then I admired Buckley. But the Vietnam issues were not debated - and that's what I was watching for. But Buckley kept interrupting Chomsky, and saying "Oh, you don't know what you're talking about." This wasn't a great debater, this was rude bullshit. It happened with Gore Vidal, too, during the Republican Convention. Vidal, who was - unfortunately for Buckley - much smarter and better read, got away with calling Buckley a "crypto-fascist"- on network TV. An epic burn, Buckley was so angry he sued Vidal, and lost - and never paid up. I didn't follow Buckley after that. His son is a fine writer as well.

Groucho says here that the main reason he did not vote for FDR in 1944 was because he (FDR) was traveling around the world too much, meeting allies and military men despite being "deathly i'll". This is most likely not true because the public was not made aware of FDR's condition until January 1945.
@michaelshell35419 жыл бұрын
Groucho said that he didn't vote for him because no man should have more than two terms and many of them no more than one. He then goes on to say that he was meeting with a couple of giants when very ill (referring to Churchill and Stalin) and that that was unforgivable and that he should have resigned. He's not saying that he voted against him because he knew he was too ill to handle negotiations, he's saying that FDR's condition validated his argument. It's really not that hard to follow a conversation if you aren't trying to show how smart you are

+Mdriver1981 Yes, but FDR knew he was very ill. Like Johnson in '68, perhaps he should have told the public he could not go on.

FDR was obviously sick, anybody with eyes could see it in 1944

It was pretty clear that he was ill. It's not even a well kept secret.

+Leftie Except Johnson was not obviously ill in 1968, and in spite of fairly heavy drinking, he lived through the whole of what would have been his second term had he run & won, although he did die two days after that, from a heart attack.

It is not about what they want. It is about us, and our legislators demanding from them what is right. And it is spelled grief, not greif.
