Dick Cavett. The G.O.A.T.. I was born the year after Groucho died. It sucks that I didn't get to share the Planet with him for even a day but I'm so happy he left a long life and a Helluva legacy for those of us that didn't get to see him while he happened.

It just seems to me that Groucho is a very interesting man and a very nice man who doesn't really take himself too serious. I think it would have been a fascinating and delightful to spend an evening having dinner with him. I don't think celebrities today really size up to him.

Groucho was an activist from early on against racism. And, here he showed himself to be very much against the Viet Nam War. The Marx Brothers' movies sharpened their wit with barbs against the Establishment (political, societal and corporate hierarchies). No wonder they were enthusiastically embraced by the young people of the 60's and 70's.

What is especially striking is not how naturally funny Groucho is which most knew already but how learned he is. He knew about Truman Capote's work whereas and would discuss other writers specific to the topic with all their work being familiar to him.

I really enjoyed the 1969 Groucho interview, he was so sharp - yet 2 years later, I can't help but hear Gilbert Gottfried's old Groucho impression here.

First time viewer of an interview of Marxs’. But as a bit of an armchair philosopher of music and comedy, it is quite obvious that his genius is of a very high level.

Hard to believe Groucho was 81 in this video. He was born in the late 19th century. The year 1890 to be exact. He looks at least in his 50s here. Groucho in his last years looked about 30 years younger than he was.

Answered prayers was published after capote's death. He did publish several chapters of the novel in 76 and 77 . He was being very prophetic on here, it killed him.

I'm a big Dick Cavett fan bc the man is very intelligent, witty and unassuming. Love Groucho but I think he was needling Capote a little, especially when he started on the marriage bit. There was no mistaking Capote for being gay so I think that was kind of a dig. I've seen Capote do talk shows half in the bag and he had a scathing tongue. He must have been sober here bc he didn't get vicious with Groucho lol

Richard Pryor got to interview Groucho once. A shame that Robin Williams didn't get the chance.

I loved Groucho in the movies, but the later part of this interview he made it very difficult for Dick to conduct an interview and kept interrupting the conversation and flow. Groucho seemed a lot more clear in his thinking in the 1969 interview. He was about 81 at this time, so that explains a lot.

Reading comments about clean jokes vs dirty jokes smacks of old biddies complaining about rock and roll. Groucho was often remorseful in public about his education. He was well read. He surrounded himself with smart people. He and his brothers did “dirty” deeds while performing in theatres. It’s about a smart joke, not a clean joke. A clean joke HAS to be smart to be funny and memorable (unlike most dad jokes that elicit groans). A dirty joke can be smart, but it’s easy to just be bawdy and get a laugh from the shock value. The veneer of preVietnam America is now another 50 years father away, too. I think we’ve ripped the band aid off for more authentic comedians who stole a balance being dirty and smart. Granted, a lot comedians still do dirty, shock material. But let’s not paint with such a broad stroke. Peace

A few years after this aired, I had an art teacher in high school that used to make fun of Truman. Also, at that point in time, same-said teacher used to live right across the street from me! He was a VERY funny guy! At the time, I had no idea who Truman Capote was! I'd never heard of him before that teacher started talking about him! But, when he would impersonate him, he had him down to a T!!! The same speaking voice and pattern, the same mannerisms, like, tilting his head back all the time, and he even did all the eye rubbing, too!! As I'm sitting here watching this and Truman starts rubbing his eye, I'm on the floor laughing every time e does it because it reminds me of how well that teacher had Truman pegged!!

Groucho was right. Broadway is squeaky (Disney) clean now.
