You can take cuttings of cape gooseberries in the autumn, over winter them and so get an early start when you plant them out in the spring

I absolutely love ground cherries and grow them every year! Started them indoors super early this year and have some already fruiting in a hydroponic bucket under lights :)

I dont label my seeds either. I just learned to identify seedlings. Last year I mixed up all my squash and melon seeds and planted them. It was fun to see what came up where!

Good morning Angela, I have grown ground cherries last year and have saved seeds from them, they are so yummy, I have gotten the seeds free from my local library they have a seed sharing service, it truly is wonderful for the community, hopefully more libraries will do this so more people can have access to free seeds, have a great day :)

I`m growing the Inca Berry type...the big tall bush. Pill bugs kept eating the seedlings so I was forced to use a bit of garden dust to allow them to finally thrive.

I discovered golden berries during fall/winter 2022 and am growing both golden berries and ground cherries for the first time right now. I appreciate the differences between the two that you have highlighted! Thankfully, I found varieties with lower days to maturity (60 - 80 days) bc I'm in zone 6a and I wanted to make sure they all had time to ripen. So hopefully that seed packet info is accurate!

Im growing ground cherry this year. I watched a few vids before purchasing but not a whole lot came up on the search. unfortunately this vid didnt come up in the search back in April, it just showed up in suggestions today. so after seeing how they sprawl out, I decided to grow them up a trellis in the container garden. I have 4 in a 4×2 bed with trellis 6ft high on 3 sides. they are crowed but doing great. I could have grew 2 or 3 and it not be as crowed in that bed but it dont seem to be bother them. I even have a banana pepper and 2 marigolds lining the front. these things are awesome and catch your eye as soon as you walk through the gate ! I want to try the ince berries now after watching this. I love grow odd peppers and tomatoes from seed! thanx for the vid, new sub now✌️❤️🙏

Thanks for this! I grew ground cherries last year and loved them but yes they take up a lot of bed space. I didn't know these 2 were different with the growth pattern.

Just ordered the Cape gooseberry seeds from Fedco because I had no idea there was a difference between them and ground cherries and have always wondered why the fruits on my plants were so small. Haha

Wha'd'yah'know, I learned something again. I may try the Cape Gooseberry if I come across some seed. I like trying new things in the garden. I planted Ground Cherry last year and though they grew easily I just wasn't impressed by the flavor. I can't really say anything bad about them, they were sweet and fruity. I just didn't really like them that much so I won't be growing them again. Anyone else should try them for themselves at least once though.

I'd love an update on your Inca Berries! I'm mostly curious what they look like right now--I got a couple "dormant" starts from a local nursery (they seem dead) and also someone gave me a start from seeds they got from grocery store fruit. I'm curious how your plants are doing right now and when you intend to plant them outside, given the weird spring. Thanks for this cool video!

Well, zone 8 in the West is far different from the Southwest, South, or East zone 8. Your region is important because of so many variables. So it`s best to learn what conditions a particular plant likes. In the South we have to grow certain fig trees, pear trees, cucumbers, etc.

I have a similar plant but it spreads by it’s roots and is invasive. I’ve never tried to eat it because I thought it was the ornamental Chinese lantern, BUT to my dismay, the husks never turned orange in the fall. They look like a ground cherry and grow low to the ground. I wonder what it is?? I think I’ll have to dig them all out this spring because I don’t think I can eat them. 🤔 zone 5

Here in NorCal 9b I have a Physalis peruviana in a 15 g pot in the green house that’s going on year 3. I have another 2 year one in a raised bed outdoors that took over the bed so I cut it back and transplanted it. I have a feeling it will take.

Are the ground cherries better after the first year? Most don't grow them as perennials but you do that's why I'm wondering. Thanks.
@drjeffpierce

@@jeffmeyers3837 I'm not sure, since so far I've only had a few plants. I think taste is about the same. Perhaps easier since you don't have to start from scratch, but I'm seeing that they start really easy from cuttings this year.

any chance you have a source for the larger Inca berry seeds? I have had poor luck and people sell the inca berry seeds as the smaller ground cherry plants.

I cannot stand the taste of ground cherries, although they grew well for us last year (Aunt Molly & Pineapple). They taste like ketchup with a lot of added sugar to me, and I was expecting them to taste something akin to pineapple or citrus. I will take your word for it that the Cape gooseberries taste pretty much the same as ground cherries, so I will stick to sungold cherry tomatoes if I'm in the mood for sweet tomatoes.

Interesting! I don’t think they taste anything like tomatoes, but I definitely think fresh goji berries taste very tomato-y! There are so many varieties of both cape gooseberry and ground cherry, you might try another one, there’s quite a bit of variety between them. I’ve grown some ground cherries I really didn’t like very much at all.

I wonder if they were underripe.
@keyphabenyisrael3219
@keyphabenyisrael3219 Жыл бұрын
@@hoosierpioneer No, they were as ripe as they get. Initially I was also wondering if I hadn't waited long enough for them to be at peak ripeness, so I let many of them sit in the house for a week and more after they'd fallen off of the plants just in case. I think it may be a situation similar to how some people love the taste of cilantro, while others can't even stand the smell of it. To be fair, I have family who loved the ground cherries I grew, so I'm trying to grow them again this year. I couldn't get any of my seeds to germinate last year, so I've over sown the cells this go 'round LOL. I am still meaning to get some physalis peruviana (cape gooseberry) seeds to try, but I keep forgetting to include that in my seed orders.

@@keyphabenyisrael3219 I was thinking the same thing regarding cilantro, which my stepfather used to call “devil weed”. I love cilantro and have the first year of ground cherries and absolutely love them but I’ve given them to three different people and they didn’t care for them. I thought they taste just like guava in flavor but different texture. I know I will keep growing them because they were so easy to grow. I actually grew them in a container and they did great until the second time they started producing. I don’t know what happened, but there was a tiny hole in the paper and no ground cherry inside. By this time I have another plant in the ground probably about 1000 ft.² away and it also has the same hole in the paper with the ground cherry shriveled up or gone.

Are you sure it’s physalis peruviana? It isn’t invasive anywhere that I know of. Other species in this genus (P. angulata) can be invasive in some locations.
