It’s always exciting to hear about a little known herb with powerful medicinal action, especially when it also happens to grow abundantly. And that’s what you have to look forward to in this conversation about ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea) with Val Alcorn!
You’ll also receive Val’s recipe for an Upper Respiratory Tincture which contains ground ivy. This is a formula she describes as ideal for “heavy, stagnant congestion and/or pain in the upper respiratory system.”
By the end of this episode, you’ll know:
► Are there ever any advantages to invasive plants?
► Why look at how herbs were used ancestrally?
► How following your curiosity and intuition can lead to powerful medicine
Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:
“I feel like everybody’s so excited about the exotic plants, the adaptogens, those buzzword herbs, but sometimes I feel like the most common plants are the most powerful.” (11:36)
If you don’t already know Val, she is an herbalist, herb farmer, writer and artist living on Anishinaabe land in what is now Michigan. Her goal is to connect people with the stories and the medicine of the plants so that we may heal body and spirit with curiosity and reciprocity. She crafts a variety of herbal tools and goods with a focus on herbal bitters and runs a brick and mortar store in Gladwin, Michigan.
I’m so grateful to share our conversation with you today!

I was so excited to see that there was an episode about Ground Ivy. As a herbalist in the damp SW of England, I use Ground Ivy as it is abundant in my local woodlands and hedgerows. It has a lot of history and folklore around it, including that it used to be used in brewing before hops, and an old name for it was Alehoof. It is definitely one of those forgotten herbs that deserves a renaissance

Ive spend so much of my childhood through my teens being violently angry at this plant. It would overtake trees and shade my favorite paths making them impossible to recognize. But as I've grown into a budding herbalist I've become so interested in it and meeting my relationship with it. This is a boundy of information. Thank you both for your time and energy

I've always loved this little plant in my gardens/lawn/driveway(or weeding). It has the most charming color and bloom. It may be invasive but because it's not so large, it is tolerable. But now to find I can use it is great news! Thanks so much for the info!

Thank you for this interview, being in Wisconsin, Val's talk seems like home. I have a yard full of Ground Ivy, I don't appreciate it( I think it stinks when mowing) but this may bring me into a better relationship with it.

Love this interview and appreciate hearing from a Midwestern herbalist. Had no idea how wonderful this plant that everyone around NW WI tries to eradicate from their lawn is. Can’t wait for Spring harvesting! And as one who follows the cycles of the moon and gardens, I’m all over the Lunica planner. Out of stock now? Thank you Rosalee and Val!❤

I always enjoy your podcasts Rosalee because I learn something new each time. Today was no exception. The day after listening to your show, I went for my morning walk and lo and behold, there she was. In my neighborhood park, there was tons of it. I just had to hang out with it for a few minutes. I'm in Alabama and now with the weather becoming warmer it seems to be a full bloom. There's a teeny tiny patch in my backyard that I won't touch. I do plan to take a bit of it from the park to tincture it. I'm excited to give it a try.

What kind of state regulations do you need to follow? Insurance? This way of helping others fascinates me. I am in MI too.

Thank you very much! A very pleasant way to spend my time listening to this interview! I signed up for Val’s newsletter and you tube channel. When I looked at her website it seemed most all of her tinctures were sold out.

By the way, Val makes her herbal medicines from the plants around her. So this time of year things can be sparse. I am sure as the plants return this spring and summer, so will her medicines. Enjoy!

At 31 minutes in this video, you and Val mentioned loving the writings of "Gweedo" regarding bitters. I never heard of this person and would love it if you gave his name. Thanks.

This video couldn’t have come at a better time as I sit here with sinus pressure and runny nose. Hopefully I’ll be over it before the tincture is ready but at least have a resource for the future.

Hi, excellent interview you’re so good. Can you please tell me what the dosage is.. I know how often to take it from the video but I can’t seem to find how much tincture to take. Thank you so much for all you do! This is the way of the New World. 💜

Since I'm not as familiar with ground ivy you'd need to contact Val directly. If you find out, please leave a comment here, I'm sure others would like to know too.
