In this very first episode of Ground Up I talk about the biggest, dumbest, most embarrassing mistake I ever made as a filmmaker. This is part of an on-going series that will evolve to cover new topics.
I'm primarily interested in helping people get something started from the ground up, whether it's building a business or developing a personal habit. I want to encourage and help people live a good life.

This has happened to me at least once when filming sports. You get into the habit of pressing that button when play starts or stops, that sometimes you forget to press it when play stops, so you press it when play starts which stops the recording, and from then on, you're recording during breaks and not recording during play. That was a very convoluted sentence but I think you get the point.

I decided to go back and start from the first one, I have been kind of letting youtube guide me through random episodes. I get a ton of value from your work. Also, just joined your email list. Good stuff.

Oh man, what a stressful day! I've recently listened to "How to Fail" podcast interview with Deborah Frances-White and there was a part where she talked about, us men, having always the balls to say yes to things and screwing up ;) - Since that interview, my view on failure has changed, as I think we need to work more on being responsible and take on things with balls when there's no other people to hurt or embarrass. Thanks for bringing such a quality to your vids and sharing them with us. Greetings from QLD

Omg, I feel the pain, man. I felt embarrassed for you lol But hey, as you said, we've all been there or eventually will. I just feel like sharing my own story X) In my case, I was playing guitar casually for 2 or 3 years (I was not even that good) and had a band (like a high school band, we didn't even have a drummer!!). I was usually calling myself a guitarist even though I was still not able to play decently after all that time playing and since me and my fellow bandmate were proudly calling ourselves musicians and I was "serious" about going professionnal, we started talking about it to people and eventually landed a gig for a party in some remote village. We were told to prepare 2 songs (any), very simple, and we had 6 months to prepare. We "practiced" like once a week for a couple of hours, but eventually, we started not being that consistent and thought we would be able to wing it. 6 months later, we were still not prepared, that was ridiculous. The day comes, we get on stage, we have no idea of what's going on, the people doing the set-ups were asking us for sound tests and we didn't even know how to do it or what they were talking about. I was frightened cause now, I'd be exposed as a wannabe for the rest of my teenage life lol The show starts and it's just humiliating to breathe lol It's a completely fail, a more experienced guitarist climbs on stage and starts coaching me on what I'm doing wrong and the whole thing becomes the most embarrassing guitar lesson ever. I had a solo to play and messed it up hard. In the end, people were too drunk to even notice how bad it was and applaused anyway (probably felt bad for us lol). And we were not hired again. So yeah, at first, it was mortifying, but now, it's just a great laugh and I'll probably be telling that story to my nephew when he becomes a teenager.

Brilliant. This is like inviting guests for dinner for first time. You cook and incredible vegetable lasagne with your partner and you ask your partner to rinse the veggies for you, but.... when you start eating with your guests, you realise that it's a bit crunchy because there is sand within the leek leafs. ups Great podcast, I look forward to watch more episodes
