Wow I’m legally blind and have 3 cornea transplants. One eye removed and other eye on way out. I have genetic disease Fuchs dystrophy. This is AMAZING probably not for me I’m 58 but my daughter is 27 and diagnosed also. So exciting the research and developments happening around the world. To the incredible nurses and doctors/specialists you are heroes. To the recipient and donor Thankyou for making this happen. That would be incredible! There is in fact a lot more research going on in the area of retinal implants and using stem cells to help heal the retina. Perhaps I should try to make a video on that too

This is one step toward helping millions. I have one blind eye and one eye that is low vision with glaucoma. I dream for a day that I can replace my blind eye with either a transplant or an implant. I get questions from folks all the time as to why they can't give me a transplant. Well, this is a step in the right direction and this gentleman and all the doctors and nurses that made this possible are true medical pioneers! We are one step closer to a "cure" for blindness but still have a long way to go.

@@DoctorEyeHealth Well first I'd to say I am 100% appreciative of ALL organ & tissue donors & their families they are heroes, they are angels! They attempted 3 yimes in tge late 70's early 80's which did not work I vhalk those up to perhaps doctors not understanding rejection as muvh as they do today. I had a partial thickness cornea transplant in 2015 but I have blurry vision. They say the surface of the cornea is irregular. They have me using a scheral contact lens which I fill with refresh celluvisc. We will see if that helps the cornea repair itself.

That is exceptional! I understand how important it is for the eyes to work together. I had a very difficult time after cataract surgery getting mine to work together, while waiting for the second eye to be done. I can only imagine how difficult the brain/eye connection with his eye transplant is. Gods blessings to all!

I really hope that this works out! I read the article yesterday in a science magazine's post and was initially excited of course, but I had my reservations. I love that they used stem cells, I love that they see electrical activity in the brain and that there is potentiality for this to become even better. It is terrible that the accident happened to him, but I am happy that he chose to go through with this trial and that all of these health care professionals came together to have even this attachment success. I hope in the near future that they will be able to grow adult eyes and implant them. My eyes are getting worse and it started with congenital cataracts. If I were able to get back to seeing even as I did as a child, when I didn't know about or notice the cataracts, I would be very happy.

Even if the eye only gives him limited vision (compared to his own eye), people who fully lost both of their sight, due to injuries or degenerative diseases, could benefit from having a single eye to give their brain some form of visual information.

This is such a huge deal because it’s always been conventional wisdom that once the eye is separated from the optic nerve, it’s lights out (no pun intended) for good. So eye transplants seemed entirely pointless up until now. If sight or even just light perception is successfully reestablished in the transplanted eye, it will open up not just a world of possibilities for curing sight loss, but also bring us closer to curing spinal cord injuries since the optic nerve is part of the CNS.

I have one eye with very limited function due to a damaged retina and I've often thought about how to do a transplant. The biggest challenge is splicing the two optic nerves together correctly. Each individual photoreceptor that is located at a specific spot on the retina is connected to a specific individual nerve that runs to a specific location within the visual cortex. To produce a proper image the millions of individual photoreceptors must be precisely mapped to the corresponding locations in the visual cortex. Having all the individual nerve endings line up and come together correctly where the two different optic nerves are spliced together won't be easy. I think a better idea is to put a cell phone camera into an artificial eye implant and then interface the electronics to the optic nerve. The electronics could correct all the mapping errors and produce a proper image.

Neuralink is doing their first human trials. We will see how fast this thing can take off. They promised to cure blindness at some point in the future. I think it’s much better solution then trying to attach some else’s eye and make it work with all those foreign cells. Seems like our body accepts metals and other forms of non organic matter much better.

Also, we have the same keyboard! :) My bet is still on connecting digital eyes to the brain via external connection. I'm sure Dr. Allen is a competent and experienced optometrist. Unfortunately in the US, most states (with few exceptions), prevent ODs from performing the kind of surgery that veteran received. Can you make a video of unfocused eyes. Like i dont understand how this term works really. Love your videos. I see you're working with Midjourney. Just a word of advice for your content moving forward... When you put your prompts into Midjourney, add "-- ar 16:9" at the end of your prompt and you will be able to output your images in 1920 x 1080 aspect ratio. Currently you are receiving them as 1:1 square format and they don't look great. I hope this helps you! Good luck.

This created so many emotions for me. I lost one of my eyes in 2016 and I've always said if I lived in Europe they'd have grown me an eye from stem cells by now. My optic nerve was severed so a transplant was not an option. Sad that he couldn't see but I wonder how is the brain reacting with said "electricity" if the nerve doesn't work

My mother has Fuch’s Disease. She had a cadaver corneal implant and hasn’t seen clearly since. She feels like she never has enough light and even has double and triple vision in the operated eye. Her doctor says it may take a year to clear up and wants to change her glasses every 6 months but said it may not work. 😢 Is it possible she received a bad cornea?

With the problem of reconnecting the optic nerve, perhaps a “coupler” of some kind which could take the millions of connections on side “A” and reroute them to be compatible with side “B”. That's strange sometimes I want to get rid of my right eye. After an injury it just causes my anxiety, dizziness, can't focus on 1 point. The problems a crazy disproportionate. I have seen 4 yes 4 opthalmologists and 2 optometris. They all say nothing is wrong. I wear am eye patch when no one is around and I feel normal. It's weirddddd. The only thing you can see is my eye opens up all the way when I completely look to the left. Not a big deal but strange. I hate my eye.
