It is used in groundwork exercises for young horses, groundwork exercises for spooky horses and I even use it in groundwork games for horses. I've worked with rescued horses. When they would raise their head when I would go to bridle them I would reach up and very, very slowly and gently rock their poll. Small slow movements. Their heads would come down without fuss. I was very careful because it was a nerve vent but eventually they liked it like a massage.

People could never figure out why the horses head came down for me or why they cooperated. This is the first time I said anything. I was in 4-H and the horse I was using as my project was itchy at the poll. When I would scratch him he would act silly stretching his neck and shaking his head, but if I kept it up a few minutes while we were standing around eventually his head would drop down until his nose almost touched the ground and he fell asleep. And he wasn't old. Only 12. His bottom lip would hang. So from the training in horse anatomy from early on, l knew how the poll was a nerve center and it affected chemicals in the brain, not just simply muscles. I was 12 when I figured out how to use that sensitive spot to get a horse relaxed to do a lot of things.

I love this, clearly you enjoy Spider every bit as much as he enjoys his time with you. I love the way you specified that the action was linked to his feet and not just the motion of his body in general. I also appreciate that you explained about the fence. I know for some it feels natural to pull back, so that attention to detail was quality teaching. I’m definitely a fan and not that you don’t already know, but your horses are gorgeous. ❤

You give me the verbiage to explain what I'm doing. I have it all in my head but when I'm helping others, it helps to have the right explanations, and you have great ways of breaking down what your doing.

I'm doing all of this stuff with my two year old and he's responding super well today. he is backing nicely from minimal pressure, dropping head, ylelding left and right with his head, he's doing a single circle at a walk at end of the rope now then we stop so not "longing" but some circles. Glad this video re inforced that I'm doing all the right things.

The one thing I look for in training videos is the bond between the human and the horse and I can say that it’s definitely there, I’m so glad that theirs trainers like her in the world constantly trying to teach young minds before the wrong uneducated trainers get to them because most times people end up with the wrong trainers and keep making bad decisions and think it’s right. I’m so glad I found you! Was looking for ground work videos to give me something to do with my horse while he is recovering from laminitis. He has been trained as a Reiner so he isn’t green. I can’t wait to get back in the saddle and work through your videos. There are a lot of videos on your channel that even a Reiner could use!

you are really great at explaining these concepts in a way thats clear to understand. Some people are amazing horse trainers and riders but not good at explaining it to other people. thank you for the info, even though i dont have a horse lol, hopefully I will have a need for this knowledge one day!

I’m using a mix of positive reinforcement and pressure/release training to get my pony to start accepting a halter. She has been living at my house since she was born, but I was a young kid who wasn’t ready for ponies. But now I’m an adult and ready to work with her. I know it will be hard and it’s already taking me a lot of time trying to get her to trust me, like her mom does, but I know I’ll get there. I am glad though because I’ve been instinctively “being like a fence post” when I have caught her to work on her feet, and I’ve studied a ton and seen the training and done some of it. I’ll add this to my notes! She struggles with giving to pressure when she is caught for certain things

Yup, if it doesn't get to the feet you aren't there yet. I like what you do, it is a nice middle rode and a mixture of traditional and some of the very popular "new age" which isn't new just becoming "very commercialized". Many roads to Rome, I just don't go with lots of force, yes I know that too...distant memories

One thing I've noticed in most all of these training vids is, u show examples with WELL mannered horses. Why not show us how to do it with problem horses?, like the ones we're dealing with. So we can see what to do when they DONT do what u say they should do. Like I can go try what u show me, but I'm dealing with a stubborn horse that's not responding like your horse is & so do we make any slight adjustments? & what would that be? It's like .. here's what it looks like when it goes like it should. Show us what it looks like when it DOSENT go like it should.

I started riding 1yr ago at the age of 57. I ride the most beautiful school horse and watching you for the year I've been learning has helped me understand how to try and be "soft". Obviously I'm not great at that, but I try. Thanks so much on behalf of my amazing horse.

This video was very well done. It solidifies a very important concept that some of us take for granted, but that we may not fully explain when we talk about our relationship with horses. The statement that "release is how horses learn" is such a powerful concept. I'm not even sure I have this right, but I'm thinking in terms of pressure being what stimulates us to think while directing us toward the right answer and release is what signals to us that we have given the right answer. We're predators, so it's a little different for us than it is for the equine, but it still applies. For any creature to learn, it's best for the trainee to get the right answer itself - then it owns the right answer. Without release being granted the instant the right answer is given, or even just as it is beginning to be given, the trainee may not truly own the right answer - so the training wasn't high quality. In the extreme, failure to release in timely fashion can actually be counterproductive. I liked the presentation and the simple practical example here to demonstrate a very important point. Well done!

Teaching by pressure and release is the best wait to train a horse! It’s how they learn, and it is such a humane way to get them to do what you ask of them.

My horse is a lot like the second one. He takes quite a bit of pressure to back up and doesn’t really care when I flap my hands and try to push him back. I’m going to work on these exercises

Don't expect to be perfect at it straight away Riece and don't beat yourself up if you make mistakes. I love the saying "There are no mistakes, only lessons". I know from personal experience that the more mistakes I make the more I'm learning. Horses are such forgiving creatures, we need to take a leaf out of their book.

ive been riding since i was 3 and im twelve now and i clicked on this video because i want to start traingng this really sweet three year old percheron quarter mix and he is the sweetest thing and this video helped so much thank you

he had to be passed to god recently because when we got him from a kill pen he had some liver problems but was the sweetest thing and his problems seemed to go away until a few week ago when he began to get neurologic and i never got to do these things with him but i do have a new 3 week old foal from my own broodmare to try with when she's older, so no hope is lost yet :)

This was quite helpful! I am working on kind of starting an old shetland pony again because he doesn’t have any manners, when he doesn’t want to work he will bite or rear. He thinks he can get away with that kind of behaviour and the problem is, most people do let him get away with it so I am working on his ground work!

Had an itchy finger on the X trigger ever so ready to turn this video off! So thankful I was not drinking anything when your first statement was "Pressure", the drink would have been spray / splattered all over my monitor; nearly fell out of my chair when you said "release"! "Oh my goodness! A person that understands the extreme basics of a horse!" I thought. Tears almost came to my eyes when you said "rope halter". Not sure what made me click on this video, I tend to avoid all horse videos because I can't bare to see so MANY horses being abused out of sheer ignorance, FEAR and BULLYING. Phew! Score ONE for the Good Horsemen!

@@BasicHorseTraining I enjoyed your video and teachings immensely! So many think they understand horsemanship, horses etc. not knowing pressure, release and timing / feel. I see to many scared of their own horse or horses in general. Don't believe in pain compliance (bits). We OWE horses! They helped us build our world and keep it (wats). Ok my walker is approaching 4,he stubborn doesn't like being told what to do,( could be from too much line breeding),he backs easy ,bumbs the gate open under saddle,like to go ,in round pen ,he backs soft ,even under saddle,teaching to side pass left side to move right , stubborn and dull ,right side to left soft ,he likes to play rough ,( biting) ,repremand ,not working ,well.in 11 years I had horses not one gave any problems grooming ,but Ringo,,he ok with farrier ,easy to catch loads easy ,but longing in round pen , point click ask spank ground,nothing ,slap his hind ,then he moves but not respectfully,1 or a few laps cutting circle in half,not wanting to move ,I move him with my shoulder just behind girth ,hide the stick ,,note ,( my bull dog gets more out of him than I so ) tks

Hi Housten 🙂, The fact that you say he is easier to move one way and not so easy the other is more than likely due to his one-sidedness. All horses are either bent right or bent left by nature. It is the same as us humans being right or left-handed so they find one side easier to bend and do things than the other. The degree of their stiffness varies from horse to horse. There are a lot of exercises to help him become more ambidextrous (able to use both sides the same). Do a search for horse straightness and see what you come up with. This might answer why he cuts the circle in half too ... he may find it difficult to bend. Notice if he cuts the circle more one way than the other. Hoses all have different personalities and as much as I love the "easy to do anything with" ones, you learn the most from the challenging ones 😆

Your red horse reminds me exactly of my Spotted mule. He's out of a halfllinger mare. He does the exact same thing with his nose and lips!!!🤣😍🤣😍

I just came across this video and watched it. All of my horses are gone now, but I saw that you were doing the same thing that we did. I had one Paint that would put his head down as soon as I got close so I could put his halter on, he was such a good boy, but he never did stop doing it as I grew up, I had to pull his head up to me. But I also wonder if he was doing it on purpose, he was also a very big character and loved to cause mischief and laugh! Yes, my friend said she heard him laughing too! I really miss him.
