Gymnastic Groundwork Part 4 of 6: Pole Exercises.
Here we introduce pole exercises and use them to build confidence, body awareness and strength using clicker training.
Poles are a great way to build your horse’s body awareness and confidence. For many horses, this starts with despooking exercises to ensure that they’re not anxious about the poles or afraid of stepping over or touching them with their feet. You can see some of the exercises I’ve done with Rowan to help her overcome her fear of poles.
From here, we can start to use poles for improving body awareness. I begin with simple exercises using just one pole and then build in complexity from there. Here you can see a few examples of beginner pole exercises that I find really useful to train.
All of this is trained with positive reinforcement, which means I use a marker (such as a clicker) and rewards to motivate and reward my horse. I’m also looking for softness and relaxation throughout, so it’s a great way to improve your communication and relationship with your horse.

Also, where would I get one of those training targets from please? X

The target in this video is a ball cock (for a cistern) screwed onto the end of an extendable selfie stick. Cheap and very effective! I'm also a fan of taping water bottles onto sticks, or bits of foam pool noodle etc - anything can be a target as long as it's fairly horse proof. But, Shawna Karrasch (in the US) and SPOD International (in Europe, in NL) both sell great ready made professional targets for horse training if you'd like to buy one. They're fantastic!

what do you use for treats

I use high fibre, low energy rewards such as low sugar grass cubes, plain alfalfa pellets or even chopped hay. This means I don't have to worry about how much they get and it keeps the horses calm without them getting TOO excited and focused on just the food. If I need a little extra external motivation, I'll add in some tastier things like carrots or horse treats, but generally I use forage-based rewards in my training :-)
