I did a room the “normal” way; then I saw this video and used the bag on my next room. I found it way easier, faster, and more thorough with the bag, also clean up is a lot easier. I used unsanded grout in 1/16 spaces, made the paste the consistency of frosting and it all worked out great for me (it was easy as cake-the decorating part lol). The old method may be better for more experienced grouters, but for a diyourselfer like me, this is the best option. Thanks for sharing such great idea!

Thanks Matt, I discovered the grout bag several years ago and loved since the first time I used it.. It saves a TON of time.

In preparation for grouting 6x24 inch wood grain tiles in an entry area, I watched your "Grouting Tile with a Grout Bag" youtube video. It helped me a lot, but what was more helpful, were your comments about using a margin trowel. Using the margin trowel really minimized the mess, and probably reduced the amount of grout used. Thanks

Very useful video. Thanks so much. I never even knew about the grouting bag until last week and have to do my backsplash. This seems less messy, more specific to the areas that need the grout, and it sounds like clean up will be easy too. Thanks a lot.

Grout sealer can be found in any home improvement store that sells tile. Grout sealers typically will enhance the color of the grout. There are sealers that leave a "wet" or glossy look to the grout and sealers that (once dry) leave no sheen at all. They are labeled as such. I don't have a favorite grout sealer brand..they all seem to work the same. Most states now only sell the water based sealer and they basically are the same, in my opinion.

You are correct about minimal waste but any tile installer who cares can save the same amount of grout using the squeegee method after pushing the grout in the joint using the standard way. Also, the most overlooked factor is making sure your tile is wet down with a sponge as you go BEFORE you grout. Using a grout bag takes more time and way more effort. Grout bags are only useful if your joints are gigantic (like 1"or larger) or for very tedious areas that dont need to get too messy (usually anything vertical) But I can totally understand showing hourly helpers or new installers this way. Not everyone cares about who's money is being wasted. Maybe 2% of people do. hahaha

I like the color of that tile the grout looked like dark brown greasy shit when you were mixing it up but it matches pretty good with the tile.

Been doing rule for a long time. I always mix grout and thinset outside as I don't have to wear a mask and its less mess that I don't have to clean up. Another thing if you wait the hour and a half to clean up the residual grout you will have the problem of clean up you incurred in the video. I only wait thirty minutes. Yes my lines are still wet but I do light wiping and its less of a struggle to get the haze off. Plus a little bit of vinegar in the water helps alot.
@ninjanateb4208 жыл бұрын
*tile not rule. Lol
@yourbeekeeper8 жыл бұрын
Hey Nate, You are absolutely right about mixing outside. The hardwood floors were going to get refinished so dust was not an issue for this job. I have never had good luck with a 30 or so minute wipe wait, I always tend to remove too much material. Vinegar is a new one, I will give it a try. Thanks.

Great video. One question: I have the interface of new real solid wood with porcelain tile, and the gap is about 1/8 to 3/16". The wood floor installers suggested that i grout this gap and to do so, not unlike yourself, use a grout bag. while I could caulk it and even find colored caulk I'd think, I'd prefer to grout it. After applying it to the crack fully with the grout bag, do you still use the float or in my case a small paint scraper, or can you just smooth it out with your finger or a popsicle stick? Would you still damp sponge the joint? Your input is helpful.
@yourbeekeeper7 жыл бұрын
Honestly, if you could find caulking that is the match color, I would use it. You have two dissimilar materials meeting. Realie that wood will expand and contract based on temperature and humidity while the tile will be unaffected. Grout sets up firm and depending on your environment, may crack with the movement of the wooden floor...just a thought. The color matched caulking typically has some flexibility that could take the cycles without issues. With that being said, if you choose to use grout, I would absolutely use a grout bag and work that seam the same way you would grout any tile job. What you use to tool that gap is up to you... everything method you mentioned would work just fine. Best of luck on your project.

Nice vid. The phone ringing made me chuckle. "Oh, for Pete's sake!" I like it that you say "it keeps them out of the land-fill a little bit longer..." Good sentiment. If everyone acted the same the land-fill would fill up far slower. You sound just like Richard Dean Anderson, I guess you both come from the same part of the US?

Grouting turned out great, but what a mess even with the grout bag. It was like smearing dudu around (without the odor, lol). Took many passes to clean up and I didn't want to use too much pressure with the sponge, removing too much grout from the 1/4" wide spaces.

Im in the middle of a very large tile job in a three bedroom house. All but the bathrooms are getting 13 by 13 tiles with 1/8 inch lines. Have you seen the sawdust method on "this old house"? The guy sprinkled a light coating of dry grout on the wet, then swept it, then sprinkled damp sawdust and swept it. The job was done in minutes and no knee work. Just curious if you have pros or cons on this idea? Thanx.
@yourbeekeeper10 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I have not heard of this, but it sounds credible... I say give it a try in a small test area and see where it goes from there. Good luck.
@samsona33329 жыл бұрын
I know this is months ago but i just ran into this video..the saw dust method youre talking about is actually the real deal, i used to do it back in the day working at lockheed, edwards, government jobs that are pretty anal about everything,.. alot of people dont know about because not alot know how to do it. But this can also be done with the same grout color youre using on the floor. "Saying you dont have saw dust laying around". And from everything i saw about that method was that its the best way to leave grout joints perfectly even, not washed out even abit.
@vapdivrr56564 жыл бұрын
The only way this makes sense if if someone has weak wrists. You bagged it, but still had to float it off, so it's just a wasted, extra step.....the only material that requires or benefits from a bag is super rough kind of stone, perhaps like a brick, otherwise a float is still the best method

I'm wanting to install beveled subway tile in a bathroom. What do you think the best way of grouting would be? It seems traditional float would be a huge waste of grout.
@yourbeekeeper8 жыл бұрын
A traditional (large) float would definately be difficult. I would recommend a margin float to shape the grout better. It's about 1/3 the size of a standard float. Any time you veer from a typical sized or flat surface tile, you add hours to the labor to the job. I am currently doing a mosaic tile backsplash for a kitchen and the owner did not understand why my bid was so "expensive" until they saw what it took to install it...and I have not even started grouting. Best of luck in your project and be happy that your tile has a nice smooth glaze that will be easy to sponge off the grout.
@rtaylor27328 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your advice. I am fairly knew to tiling. I hope this is not way over my head. I'm kind of scared! Lol
@yourbeekeeper8 жыл бұрын
Good morning Rachel, beveled tile is certainly not a starter tile..haha, but you will do just fine. Use traditional materials, focus your mind and take your time. I would not recommend putting any additives to your mortar or grout as they will often reduce your tooling time, just stay to cool, clean water. Remember that preparation is really important for a good outcome. Make sure your walls are prepped well, your center lines are clearly and accurately marked out and you protect existing finished surfaces. Laying tile subway style is actually a bit easier than traditional grout lines...its moreforgiving for slight alignment errors.
