This is not a joke or a prank. Growing up to 18 pounds of apples in containers is amazing enough, but even more amazing is they only take up 1 square foot.

Thanks for another great learning experience, Luke. I particularly liked this video because you chose not to edit out the fact that you slightly miscalculated the depth of the hole you dug to plant the apple tree into. Not only did this serve to express the importance of planting depth, but it also served to show that even an old pro doesn't necessarily get it right the first time without having to go back and readjust a little bit. This takes the pressure off of guys like me who are OCD about doing things right the first time. I have been reluctant to plant fruit trees, as badly as I want them, because I felt like I had to be so exact about planting depth. You've shown me that getting it right is not that hard to do. Thanks again, and keep up the good work. You are doing a great service to us wannabe gardeners and orchardists.

I bought a 3 in 1 Cherry tree and I am planning on planting it in a half whiskey barrel, just like yours. I’ve looked everywhere for info on what type of medium to use in a container. Most of the info that I found was for in-ground planting. I’m so glad that I found this video! I’ve been watching your channel for a few months and I’ve found a wealth of information about a wide range of gardening topics. Thank you so much for your willingness to share your expertise and experience with this novice! I’m a farmers granddaughter and I have a passion for growing things, just not a lot of experience. Great video! Many people have less than ideal soil for fruit trees. Columnar apple trees are not the only trees that do well in pots. My dwarf dorsett golden apple tree topped out at 5 feet a couple of years ago because it is on miniature dwarf rootstock. Dwarf Cherry trees get taller, mine are around 8 feet high. I have a bonanza genetic dwarf peach tree that is said to only reach 5-6 feet. I grow chives and green/walking onions around the sides of the pot.

I used to grow all my fruit tree in wine barrels. I had to get rid of them though. I had massive problems with molds and Termites and the rings rusting away. They were on a concert slab and still got termites. They are a bad Idea in the New Orleans area. So I switched to 25 and 50 Gallon grow bags since they drain better and termites don't eat them. Really wish I could have keep them because the wood looks great. Thanks for the great Idea of Herbs as companion plants in large containers MIgarderner. I normally plant Marigolds around them to help keep pest away. I may have to do small pest repelling herbs, in those large containers also.

These apples seem to be for zones 4 thru 8. I almost remember the awe that everyday experience is for tykes. I can remember a smell from excelsior packing that was in a garage at the end of the block. I was only 3 years old, and nobody knew I was gone, and for some reason, I wandered back to my house that was a few houses away. Little kids are natural explorers. That's a 65 yo memory.

I am a Michigan native, now down in Zone 7. I've just stumbled across your channel and am learning a lot. This one was very timely (a few years old, but new to me!), as I just received a columnar apple tree from the nursery and repotted to a 7 gallon pot to give it a little room while I prepare a half whiskey barrel planter. Do you have a suggestion on whether I should wait at all before transplanting to the half barrel? I don't want to shock the plant with too much moving around, but if it makes sense to get it into the big planter sooner rather than later, I would potentially move it over within the week.

My mum grew an apple tree in a 10 gallon container. It looks like a sad, wasteland twig but produces up to 60 apples per year. I don't know how, it's three branches and 4ft tall 😂 Growing granny Smith and cox apples and both are loving their containers too
