Most people don't have thousands of dollars to start fund their trading account, so one of the most common situations is the need to grow a smaller amount of money. This is certainly not an impossible mission to accomplish, it is something that will require a whole lot of discipline and control as a trader. I'm all for helping people learn how to trade and make money with stocks, however, I do also realize it can get annoying when all someone does is "teach in theory" without using any kind of real life results. Because of this, I want to show you some stock trading results from a member of my community which gives us all (myself included) some great reminders and learning lessons. When you are brand new and just getting started, you can without question have success, the problem with this is a quick track to start making bad decisions. How so? Let me show you not with "theory", but with real life results.

Started trading a $2500 account and doubled it a week or so. Then moved on TD with $17k and was quickly up to $23k before losing $7k in two days. Started thinking about quitting while I was almost at break even. Then realized I was trading too big a position normally 1000-3000 share sizes. Decided to get back in and grind and take the small profits rather than taking a loss and trying to hit home runs. $3k back up and humbled by the entire experience.

When you trade. You must PAY YOURSELF FIRST. Read rich dad poor dad. Helped me lots. Rich people pay themselves after they make profits in anything. Keep a small portion of your wins in the acct and roll into new trade. Effectively your pf will be all profits after a while given you can trade well. After this trading is so much fun. Cause it’s all market money and you still pay yourself. I’ve lost much more so I can relate. I’m on my 3rd year and I’m killing it for the last year. Keep going and never quit!

Did exactly this recently after growing my account by 100% with small gains .. thought well if im right so often why not just go big with leverage and grow massively. BOY I was wrong. Lost 80% of the account even thought ultimately I was right. Got a sticky note next to my laptop saying 'SMALL GAINS!' .. no trade is good enough to risk disaster.

Why does increasing position size equal failure in your particular case?
@khalilh6973
@khalilh6973 4 жыл бұрын
@@permbee7129mistake 1: It was the one day I couldn't keep an eye on the stock.. so if anything, I should have reduced my size. Mistake 2: Went full size too early.. stock went higher than I anticipated. Should have averaged in. Mistake 3: Risked pretty much entire account I was that certain this stock was going to tank. Yes I was right but my entry was too early. Had I traded as usual, could have taken a small loss, and shorted again near major resistance. Either way, I know for next time 👌 BTW the stock was WireCard (WGI) The main reason for failure was risking way too much. Greed. Cockness. These are the main reasons that make you increase size too much too fast.

Oh man, has it ever happened. I had what I considered to be great success starting out, grew my account to $50,000 over one year, and then lost $15,000 on one trade due to over sizing the position. It was flat out arrogance coupled with ignorance - a deadly combination. I was so mad at myself, I stepped out of the market completely for over a year. It was devastating. I'm now back to trading but that one lesson pops into my head every single trade day. Nothing like bad experience to get your head straight.

This is so relevant. I can definitely relate to this. Happened recently with me . I am from India. I am also a new trader . Just started trading from March, for two months till 3rd week of June I had success . Grew my account around 3 times. Then in the last week of JUNE this same thing happened, I increased my position and started trading and so to started overtrading . So two bad things in the same time . So my 3 months of hard work blown out in just 1 week. After the debacle I got up for the fight again, stopped trading for a day or two. Started again with a lot of discipline and lot of patience . For the last few days getting positive results though small. Hopefully with discipline proper risk management and less greed can grow my account once more. ,😊 Thanks for the video it was very relatable.

Every story you hear about people losing big involves them losing patience and breaking their risk management plan. When the numbers are small it's too easy to forget that 1% profit on the day is often unsustainably gigantic. Take the small win, stop for the day, and have the patience to trust that your account will grow through compounding as your skills grow through education and experience.

I found that for me, trading a cash account helps with the volatility and uncertainty in the current market. I plan to use my margin account for swing trades on stocks like Apple and so on. On fast moving stocks, or stocks that move at least $2 or more in like an hour or so, I can scalp those for good profits depending on the number of options contracts I purchase. Of course, I look at the Delta, theta, momentum, etc?

Luckily I have not blown up my account, just stuck spinning my wheels. Seems like I make a few good trades and then slowly lose my gains. A few things I have learned that really helps: #1 - never try to make back losses in the next trade. #2 - if you have a paper trading account, use it to your advantage. Try the cocky trades on your paper account, if you feel off psychologically trade for a day or 2 in you paper account to regain your confidence.

It's so difficult as a beginner to keep those emotions in check when trading. I started off following my strategy and winning a ton. Then one day, I made two successful premarket scalps and began trading on excitement instead of strategy, entering when it "felt good." Long story short, that was (and still is) my biggest one-day loss, but worse, it set me off on a losing streak that sent me completely in the opposite direction emotionally, and I began trading scared. This prevented me from executing my strategy properly, because I was now too scared to enter trades for fear that I'll keep losing, and guess what? That fear led to frustration at missing so many opportunities that I would've won, and I began trading in frustration...which resulted in more losses.

As a brand new trader on robin hood I found myself making some money on an investment. Today as I was considering increasing my position and dumping thousands more in my account I saw this video and it may have totally saved me. Now my goal is to invest no more of my own money. Take my $200 and see if I can turn it into $1,000 and keep it. Thanks for the advice!

I've had to deal with a similar but smaller loss. Then I listened to the voices and revenge traded to attempt to make up the losses. That didn't work out, losses grew, then I had to deal with the emotional impact. Stick to your rules and SL! Plan your trade, trade your plan. Thanks for your guidance Clay.

I've messed up one too many times (started day trading options NOV 2020)... when I bought only 1 contract at a time and took smaller gains, my account grew slowly but as soon as I got over confident and though I knew how to read charts at the time and knew it all, I went to heavy on some trades and lost a major portion of my account. Trading is serious and sticking to our rules will help in the long run. I've had to learn to let go of the FOMO.

I knew all this but due to the need for seeing profits I forced it. And blew my account. Now on second injection of cash. I have learned two things. 1 don't force trades in flat markets. 2 don't blindly follow indicators in all market conditions. Indicators work best on different markets at different times. Also I now only trade from s and r levels I don't just eyeball it anymore.

My story - Day 1 (with a new account on Robinhood) I went from $50,000 USD to $100,000 trading Tesla Call Options in less than 4 hours. Day 2, I went from $100,000 to $5,000 trading Tesla Call Options after leaving my computer for less than 45 minutes with no stop losses. I blew up my account by failing to follow the basic fundamental rule of setting a stop loss to minimize losing capital. I always set the stops, but did not this time because I got called away from the PC before I did. Reminds me of having a wreck in your car on the one and only day you did not wear your seat belt.

I am at this season in my trading journey. I became so relaxed and arrogant because I was in a good streak. Lost half of my profit in 1 day. So now, I lessened my capital and transferred the remaining profit to my Roth IRA to make sure I won't loose it again. I will try to trade according to my learned techniques from now on and be happy with small gains. Greediness always wants to creep in in trading. Lost that half in WISH.

This is a great video. Love these videos and the channel Clay! I started trading futures about 2 months ago. I was doing ok, but always up and down with the account. I hated using stop losses because as soon as I add a stop loss, it gets tripped (and I have tried 10 ticks, 25 ticks.) So I tried no stop loss and did better. Then I was on a bad losing streak for 2 weeks. I refused to get stopped out so I didn't use them. I blew up my account a 3rd time because I refused to sell as the price went in the other direction rapidly. I knew as soon as I sold, it would turn around, so I stayed in the game and watched my money go away. I know stop losses are important but I was sick of getting stopped out. So now I'm at $900 from $3000. I have to start trading micro futures to work back up. I was trading only one contract of NASDAQ but decided to add a 2nd to get more money....that killed me double bad.

I have been a core trader for a number of years. As per Warren B., I buy quality companies and hold forever. I am extremely interested in swing trading and created my trading plan. I have a fair amount in the account and need to do sizeable trades to keep liquidity moving. From your video, I am having trouble understanding how scaling your trades leads to failure? I would need to start with 1-trade per day at $10k per trade to keep 1/3 of the account moving. Finding the companies to trade is one thing, but when I need to scale to 3-trades per day (or bigger positions), I would need to find more. I feel I will be leaving a lot of cash on the sidelines (or in core trades which are very risky right now).

I started tinkering with the market with $143,000 doing mostly swing trades. I ramped it up quickly to $185K. Then went ape shit on Norwegian Cruise Lines (a 9,000 share position) and slaughtered my account. Down to $102K. Fortunately, within the last month I got it back up doing safer, more strategic transactions. I'm up to $139K now. Lesson learned.

I took a bit of a different route in my trading journey so far. I had my initial lossess big but within max risk (about 5% account size), then I had to start building confidence again since I got punched immediately in the first week when I dipped my toes with real money after spending some five months paper trading. Since then, losers have become smaller and smaller, but I am still working on getting the winners I need to be profitable. I am about flat with commissions and trading platform fees now. Working hard, steady, one step a time. Hopefully I will get there soon enough. Thanks for sharing this Clay!

Clay, I've watched many of your videos and and have enjoyed and learned from them. This one, not so much. I thought I was going to see YOU turn $554 into $10,000. Instead, I "wasted" almost 13 minutes listening to you talking about a newbie blowing up his account by being too cocky. You say stick to your plan and DO NOT increase your position size too quickly many times and in many ways. Edit it down to about 3 minutes and it would be tolerable.

had $691 in my account today n lost $15 today. was down $40 in a trade and didn't exit because my stop loss wasn't hit. reversal happened n ended up being down only $2 . It ended up going down n I got nervous n sold . it ended up rallying back up ($hood) n turns out I would've made about a 25% gain. Wouldn't have exited the trade early If I didn't make my position too big. almost had $700 in my account n bought a $120 position. Usually buy $50 dollar contracts. Learned a big lesson
