Some really good advice and tips. Thanks JB! I germinated mine in a paper mache/ cow pot cells and placed them in a small tesco profiterole tub as a propagation dome and stuck them on the windowsill next the the radiator in the living room. As soon as they germinated i put them under grow lights next to the alliums. Two of these are from red hot chilli peppers and a Thai Dragon chilli pepper plants that i have overwintered. This will be year 3 for them so i want to get a backup/ new replacement for them but to also give away to friends and neighbours that i know like chillis. I am also growing California Wonder - sweet bell pepper. I have grown sweet bell peppers before from saved, shop bought sweet bell pepper seeds but they didn't do too well, which was my fault as i would sow them too late and just sowed a bunch in a 30cm pot! lol I would then leave the strongest plant in there and cut the rest. I did get peppers but they were just small ones! lol I wasn't much into growing peppers at that point and it was just more of a science experiment but since getting into chilli's and my sister giving me some proper seeds, i thought i might just give it a proper go this year. I would love to grow more chillis but i tend to keep them inside as when it comes to overwintering, i don't want the hassle of changing the soil to prevent the bugs coming in the house and wrecking the other indoor plants. I might put the sweet bell peppers outside, depending on the space. Looking forward to part 2!

I grew my chillies and peppers outdoors in my south facing garden for the first time last year. Previously I only ever used a polytunnel. Well, I won't go back, I had huge crops of each in a fairly cool and wet year. Amazing results. I am going to try my aubergines outdoor this year too.

I've recently found a Sylvagrow compost, that has added John inns and sharp sand, that they are selling as a seed sowing compost so will be seeing how well it compares to their standard one.

I have found this is a lovely Sylvagrow compost. I have used it for potting on or planting out and great for carrots. I tried it for seeds, be careful as it does get a bit crusty on the surface as it dries out which can stop the seedlings pushing through.

Great video, concise and extremely informative. As you say the Chillichump seeds are awesome with which I've experienced perfect germination. Definitely don't grow 80 plants...err...well...moving swiftly on... Keeping my fingers crossed with my compost, which I sieved, as the only person selling Sylvagrow near me was wearing a highwayman's mask and riding a horse called Black Bess.

Great video. I use a hot water tank cupboard for germinating chilli and other seeds. Probably about 30°c+ in there and I've always had great results. So for those who don't have a heat mat but do have a hot water tank cupboard then I would highly recommend trying that. If using this approach it's best to plant in individual pots because it means you can remove the individual pots and put them in light as soon as possible to avoid leggy seedlings. It's also important to check for germination every day for the same reason. A germinated seed in the dark grows tall really fast and you don't want leggy plants. Being able to remove individual pots allows you to leave the ungerminated seeds in the warmth. I put all the pots in a big plastic food container to keep the seeds in a humid environment (and to avoid increasing humidity outside the container).

Nice video. I'll be growing Chinence, some Chinense and... some Chinense! And potentially some Jalapeño 😄I think I'll start them in coco coir actually, cause I don't want a bunch of fungus gnats (which tend to come with store bought soil). Will probably use soil when potting up though I think.

Great video JB, very concise, lots of options for people too. I have a question, mine are in quarter seeds trays and some have now germinated seed leaves showing strongly. Should I prick them on into cells before their true leaves appear or wait a bit. Thanks. Dawn
@JBNat
@JBNat 6 ай бұрын
It's sort of a balancing act and I'm not too sure! I think if you wait a little bit they're still unlikely to have got their roots tangled up with the neighbours, and they'll be a little stronger so less likely to be damaged :)

Hi when is the latest I can sow bell peppers in the UK. I have a heated conservatory with good lights.
@JBNat
@JBNat 29 күн бұрын
@@timwells3056 realistically it's too late to get a good crop now, but if you sowed right now you will have good growth until the end of September, so three months of growth. If they're in a nice heated conservatory you'll still get a bit of growth in October (but much reduced natural light). November they will keep on ripening, so there's still hope if you sowed now. If you have grow lights and heat then in theory you can grow in there all year round.

Amazing work! The seedlings will struggle this time of year even on a south facing window sill. I would definitely recommend a grow light to suppliment them. You will probably be okay with one of the various £20 amazon jobs, especially if they're already getting a bit of sunlight. If you do get leggy seedlings it's not the end of the word but it's best avoided if you can afford the lights!

@@paulrush5935I'll admit I'm not the best to ask as I've not used them, but I see a lot of people using the 'branch' style of lights which have lots of posable bits. Sometimes they have a little clip attachment which looks quite handy too. I think the best thing is just to get what will fit your space. You can also get grow bulbs which just plug into a normal lamp fixture if you have one of those lying around.
