GROW FRESH SPIRULINA AT HOME - Complete Course

Spirulina is one of the most interesting food there is:
- It’s full of complete proteins
- anti-oxidants
- and is a great source of iron.
+ much more
You might have heard about spirulina already, or maybe even dare to try it in its dried form only to find out it is horrendous. Well, that’s true, it is, except when it’s fresh ! (trust me I wouldn’t believe that either before I tried growing some)
Sadly,... researchers found out a nasty secret: most spirulina on the market today is full of toxins and heavy metals due to the water used to grow it in industrial conditions.
When I discovered that, I immediately threw mine in my plants (they loved it) and decided to grow my own. Which ended up being a great idea because fresh spirulina doesn’t have any taste at all indeed ! This allows me to use it in many different ways.
In this course, I’ll show you the easiest way to get fresh spirulina at home. You’ll even learn how to automate your culture so that the only thing you have to do is to harvest it when ready !
Spirulina is super adaptable which means anyone can do it - this course makes a perfect project to do with kids to teach them about plants, basic chemistry and nutrition.

Additional Care Info:
In order to make sure my spirulina is well, I like to take a look at it under a cheap microscope once in a while which allows me to see quickly if anything else is present in the water.
As long as your culture doesn't smell or look suspicious you should be fine. Please make sure to consult a specialist if you're planning on using your spirulina extensively or feed it to a young person, this course is for informational purposes only - the platform and creator deny any responsability.

Recipes are so easy....Guacamole, strait into a salad, any spreadable cheese, any jams, mixed with honey to go on toast, straight into any smoothie, for kids Blue mac n'cheese. Think of it as a food additive, you can add a couple tablespoons to so many things, even coffee and bakery. The taste is so subtle that it mixes very well. You can turn things blue or green. Most blue food coloring uses spurillina to a degree. Just try it, uses it like a spice, 1-2 tablespoons at a time, just don't fry it in a pan. Baking into bread though, delicious and moist! Makes bread better. Just fold 2 tablespoons into the dough for a cool marbled look and the most moist bread ever. Not soggy, just perfect.

Note that if you want all the vitamins and proteins and other nutrients spirulina can give you, it can't make those without access to the elemental building blocks they're built from. You have to feed it a complete diet if you want it to give you a complete superfood! Spirulina doesn't produce oxygen in order to float - oxygen gas is the waste product of photosynthesis, which it will do whenever it is in light and its other needs are met. Providing good light from the sides of your grow tank will mean that the spirulina trapped in bubbles of oxygen on the top of the tank don't block the light from the rest of the culture. The portion of the culture at the top should be the easiest to skim off if you don't want to disturb the whole culture as much as the usual harvest methods.

Very cool, thanks for this guide and links to products! Generally, what types of contamination problems do people have if they have them when growing their own? I know the PH should inhibit bacterial growth but what about other algae strains? Will it be hospitable for other strains we dont want which might get introduced accidently or already in your starter? Im reading about the microcystin contamination in mass produced spirulina which is produced by Microcystis aeruginosa. Just wonder if we might not have a 100% pure culture over time and not know. Also do you need to sterilize the media in any way if you follow the recipe to make it yourself? Thank you!

Hey Rose, it's really up to you and how dense your culture is right now/how quick you want your spirulina to grow, so I'd suggest playing around with different settings. I remember reading that the ideal is to have your spirulina exposed 50% of the time. Many shorter bubble periods are preferred as you just want to swirl your mix around and not create a perpetual motion for your culture.

@pizzatopia
@pizzatopia 11 ай бұрын
if you have gut problems, then i strongly suggest that you look into making your own fermented foods, easier than cultivating spirulina. I run a small pizza shop, and i offer to my customers my live culture hot sauce, as well as sauer kraut which i put on my fresh green salads. Fermented cabbage is one of the BEST foods you can consume. You should youtube search on how to make sauer kraut, but for pretty much all fermented vegetables, you keep the same ratio of salt to vegetable ingredients, which for me is 2.5% so if i have 100 grams of shredded cabbage, i add 2.5 grams of salt. don't add water, just shred you cabbage( i also put in shredded carrot, fresh dill when in season, cilantro, and celery), then mix in the salt. The salt draws water out of the vegetables, and you must save this water and put it in the ceramic or glass jar with the vegetables. Important thing is to keep the vegetables under the level of the brine, you don't want air touching it, as the beneficial bacteria are anaerobic (don't like O2). after a couple days bubbles will form, means the bacteria are reproducing, creating co2, and you can tamp it down. I cover my kraut with a big leaf or two of cabbage, and i weigh it down with custom made ceramic weights, but you could just use a good ziplock bag with the right amount of drinking water to weigh it down. after about five days, you can start sampling the kraut, should begin turning sour, and when i'm happy with the level of sour i want, i put it in the fridge. It will keep for at least 4 months, but i usually eat it all before it's at that point. sometimes it can keep even longer no problem.

Yes even more controversial is how white skin in the West is from Western Asian wheat monocultural farming that lacks Vitamin D in the diet! So Europeans had dark skin before say the first white people fled as ecological refugees around 8000 BCE into Europe from West Asia - why? Lime ash from wood ash was used to waterproof the housing - and deforestration then caused drought - so flee into Europe white people with your wheat farming! hahaha. Northern Europeans before that ate fish and so they got vitamin D from their fish diet and hence had dark skin. mmm So yeah I can see how just eating spirulina would be a problem in getting B12.
