Freedom Forest Life - Off Grid

We are Dan & Laurie and our land is called Freedom Forest - Its 3 acres in the South of England where we are creating an edible oasis and trying to provide as much for ourselves, from our land as possible, where we are completely off grid.
Our food growing journey began together in 2017 when we created our first No dig lasagne bed. Every year we grow more and more and now we are currently around 60-70% self sufficient in our food needs.
Our style and methods are inspired by permaculture and we try to be thoughtful about how and what we do, to be as gentle on the planet as possible.
In our videos you can follow our journey as we share our experiences and what we get up to at Freedom Forest. Elephant Garlic is such a valued crop to us and its great fun seeing how BIG the bulbs grow too. From the Autumn Equinox to around the end of October is a great time to plant Elephant Garlic we find, as it needs a little longer in the ground than regular Garlic. Our Elephant Garlic bed is now planted up - No Dig, and ready to start sprouting. Check out this weeks vid to see how we grow ours and how we nearly LOST our WHOLE harvest this year!
We are MASSIVELY grateful that you choose to watch our Videos and support us in this way, however, If you appreciate and get value from what we share and would like to help us a little more, you can become a Freedom Forest Patreon (link below).
It takes us about a day to film some video and another few evenings to edit it, Patreon provides a way you can support what we do with any size donation you wish, it could simply be the value of a packet of seeds! We have many projects coming up, as well as wanting to improve our videos with better camera equipment... maybe even a drone one day to make our videos even more detailed and better quality for you to enjoy! You can help make it viable for us to keep putting the time into making these videos by becoming a Patreon. In return your name will appear in the end credits of our videos and we'll message you a password for the 'members area' of our website where we share more of our favourite recipes exclusively for our Patreon's 💚

My elephant garlic harvest this year was awful (my fault for not caring for them enough). By contrast though, the ordinary garlic was very good.....i'd planted these into soil that contained a lot of part decomposed twigs and leaves underneath the garlic and a layer of nice compost above, so similar(ish) to the conditions you have. The garlic roots appeared well developed and had latched onto the decaying twigs and seemed to benefit from the 'mini hugelkultur' setup. I'll be trying the elephant garlic in similar medium this season and hopefully that will improve the harvest.

Hey Toni, yeah interesting - we grew both of our in the same way, but my French garlic is defo better quality than the elephant this year, so maybe it just wasn’t a good year/weather for elephant garlic! Having said that, where I dried the French garlic was more protected too, so I think this is the major difference for us. They defo love partially rotted down matter though … I’m pretty sure I read that somewhere once too 💚✌️🌿

Hi, do you have a problem attracting slugs under the cardboard on the edges of your planting beds ?

We have a LOT of slugs everywhere this year where we have had so much rain here since last winter - the numbers have gone crazy again, checked earlier though since you asked and couldn't see any hiding under the cardboard - I guess it would attract them more if it was the only good hiding place in your garden/growing area... heaps of places for them to hide here though anyway 😃 Thanks for watching & messaging Michael 🙏✌️💚
