As illustrated in the video, the ingredients in the initial soil mixture are as follows: 50% soil 20% composted cow manure 20% Burnt rice husks* 10% Rice husks Later, after 103 days, he added crushed eggshells and vermicompost. Notes: Burnt rice husks, otherwise known as Charcoal Rice Hull, is rich in silica and potassium and can be mixed with soil to provide more moisture and nutrient retention. Rice husks have the following benefits Its high silica content makes it useful in soil mixes It resists fungal decomposition. It resists moisture penetration. It decomposes slowly. It insulates well. It's renewable. Crushed eggshells are rich in calcium. Breaking up your carefully rinsed & dried cracked eggshells and mixing them in with the soil in your garden will help boost this essential soil mineral. Vermicasting, also called vermicomposting, is the processing of organic wastes through earthworms. It is a natural, odourless, aerobic process, much different from traditional composting. Worm castings are rich in micronutrients, containing iron, sulfur, magnesium, zinc, copper and calcium. They also provide macronutrients and have a nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) ratio of 1-0-0 to 5-5-3. To save the most money, one can process their own eggshells and vermicompost, but one can also purchase these items online. Addendum: rice husks/burnt rice husks may be purportedly substituted with similar size and shape particles with making additions or replacements. Components like fine bark, some compost, and sawdust most closely compare with rice hulls. I have strived to present factual infornation, but if amy of my data is inaccurate or incomplete, please correct. I needed to write this information out for my own gardening journal and presented it here to save others the time & effort. Happy Gardening.

Thank you for making this video. The wall of sweet potato vines look like ivies. I would harvest the stems and leaves and steam them. They are delicious and nutritious. It can be stir fried also, made into salad or soup with fish or meat.

Your video is a great reminder of the value of patience and perseverance. It takes a lot of time and effort to grow and harvest melons and oranges, but the end result is so worth it. And the fact that you're able to make a living by selling them at the market is even more impressive. Keep up the great work! And it's an honor to have you visit our channel, we can discuss more about our experiences in harvesting and building farms.

Good morning farmer. Very good to see your sweet potato 🍠. I try to plant some in Jamaica 🇯🇲 it a year I did not get any potato it ran all over .Time to reap I get nothing well done to you Keep up your good work on your farm 🍠👍🏿🙏🏾

@Brenda Ramsey, fellow Jamaican here, but living in the U.S. now. I have watched some videos on sweet potatoes. One farmer gave some pretty good advice from start to harvesting in different videos. One key thing you mentioned and that I noticed in this video and the no production for you and the low production for that many sweet potato slips is that you guys allow ALL that Vining to grow. This use up quite a bit of energy into the leaves as opposed to the production of the sweet potatoes themselves. I do not have any practical experience myself as I have just started my sweet potato slip production in May 2024 and planted my slips on 1 Jun 2024, 3 Jun 2024, and as recent as last week Sunday, 7 Jul 2024. All in containers. I will not allow mine to vine no where close to this video. In fact you can harvest the vines and leaves and cook it up like callaloo [for the Americans, similar to spinach]. On a side note, if you are growing Sorrel/Hibiscus 🌺, you can harvest the leaves throughout its growth as well and cook it up like Callaloo/Kale. In either case of the sweet potatoes or Sorrel/Hibiscus, you would not want to take all the leaves as you still want photosynthesis going. While with the Sweet Potatoes, you would cut the vines and leaves. I would not do this for the Sorrel/Hibiscus. I started my Sorrel/Hibiscus from seeds on 11 Apr 2024. I am now battling the Western UV sun rays since 1 Jul 2024 on Sorrel as they are wilting for about 4 hours but bounce back about an hour after the direct sun light has passed. I am now using shade cloth and this is working. All the best in trying the Sweet potatoes again, if you decide to do so and not let the leaves and vines suck up ALL the energy that is needed for the sweet potatoes.
