Hope you guys enjoy! Watching these clips, it is apparent I was/am no prodigy. I decided to pursue violin very late (when I was 17) so I was never big on competitions, I didn’t practice much nor seriously until late high school, etc. Though I’ve gotten a bit of a late start, I am doing my best to catch up now haha. Never would my little self have guessed I would become a violin major, yet here I am :) Cheers to the rest of the journey! Thank you for watching ❤

Maybe not a prodigy, but definitely instilled with great habits. Seitz after one year of playing is amazing. I finally decided to take the violin serious after 4 years of not practicing(to put in perspective, I just started the same seitz Sophie played after 1 year, but it took me 3 full years), and after a year of intense practice, I’m working on Bruch rn. Moral of the story: Practice

@@violaisreallycool I decided to take a leap of faith, got a private teacher and practiced 5+ hours a day, because I could practice during school as school was online back then. Gotta pay my respects to Covid(and my beyond wonderful private tutor), I’m currently working on my college audition repertoire right now so wish me luck this spring!

@@TheAsianTree GOOD LUCK!!!! I'll be doing the same, I'm a violist around the level of bruch for violin too, so it's definitely going to be a grind. That's the kinda practice that can get you to Juilliard :D. Especially with that trajectory

I love it, the reason why I film myself so often is because I want a violin progress video also after a couple of years. You must be like one of the pioneers to have such a video created, it's amazing! You are brilliant!

omg. I have an almost identical history on the violin. I haven't been able to intensely practice the past few years and lost a lot of time (played bach partita 3 recently but not well enough). This motivated me to just practice more and catch up! Thank you for the video, and goodluck !

hi! it's incredible how many similarities i see with my violin playing and yours - also started at 8, played czardas at 14, played meditation with a live orchestra hahaha - i'm 17 currently; i actually put violin on hold for a year and a half because of school but i'm really getting back into it and hoping to improve before auditioning for uni at the end of this year :) watching ur drastic improvement from 16-18 is really cool, i'm hoping to be able to do the same :)) thank u for posting and sharing ur journey w us!!

I started playing the violin in 2018, but one year later I stopped because of lack of time and energy problems (it was college entrance exams), then I got into college and now, four years later, I'm planning to go back to it. Watching this and thinking "I could have gotten so better if I just didn't stop" is imensely painful. I tend to feel a bit bitter as well when seeing other violinists because of that, but for some reason when I watch your videos, it just inspires and encourages me. Thank you for making this type of content, I will keep looking up to you and hope someday I can play like that ♥️

I started learning the violin 2 years ago, but had to stop as situations didn't permit. Now I'm 17 and am thinking of relearning the violin. I'm nervous, and have a lot of self-doubt, but your video motivates me🙂

Really Great! My situation is similar to you. I start violin at 12. I seriously practice when I was in Junior. I decided to pursue violin at 16.I am now preparing my college audition. It is good to hear a similar situation to me.

@@youzhang5018 I got into Peabody, IU Jacobs School of music, University of Miami Frost School of Music, and got rejected from Northwestern and UCLA, I eventually choose to attend CSU Long Beach because of the scholarship and the teacher there!

Thank you for sharing this video! Your improvement really motivates me to practice more. I started the Vn last year at the age of 42 and doing vivaldi 3rd mov of suzuki book4. Though i am older when first picking up the Vn, it gives me hopes that i "might" be able to make such a beautiful sound as you did in 7 years. And i watched other clips you put up. You seem like a very likeable person. I hope you will be a very good violinst and professor producing many talented students.

You inspire me so much !! I’m going to start my 10th year of violin, but I’m barely able to play Czardas… because I’ve never practised a lot when I was younger (I’m in a tiny music school in France (I’m French), so it’s more « for fun », I don’t want to study music at all !), but now I really really want to be able to play like you !! I need to work on my technique et my sound in the high positions but it’s hard with high school (I finish school at 7pm almost everyday), so if anybody has advices I take them all 😭 Thank you for your inspiration, you’re extremely talented (and you’ve worked hard for sure !) !

I believe in you-- actually practice is less about the time spent, and more about the efficiency, consistency and building good routines! even if it is for just 10-30 minutes a day, it can really add up if you're practicing well and consistently. you've absolutely got this, if that's something you want to achieve/work towards! thank you for your kind words

Love watching your progress! I started violin at 9 but never practiced much and finally stopped in high school. Now some 40 plus years later I started violin again and enjoy it much more (but I’m do not want to play in a recital!). I ended up studying much more ballet and went on to dance at a large performing arts university. Still take ballet class for fun and am trying to fit in practicing violin in between working! Have a wonderful time and enjoy your journey.

Playing Seitz after just one year?? That’s incredible! I started playing when I was 5 but didn’t have a good teacher for the first 2 years and also wasn’t very disciplined with my practice, so it took me about 4 years to get to the Seitz concerto. But I can tell you put in a lot of hard work from day one which is the absolute most important thing.

Hello! Amazing progress!! When you showed you were playing the adagio from the first Bach sonata for your college audition, I was trying to seriously prepare myself mentally to hear a gorgeous accompanying fugue. The preludio is what I’m working on now and it’s by no means easy either!! I was wondering why you didn’t do a movement of Tchaikovsky for your college audition if you were already working on that a few years before having to record the audition!

hi!! thank you so much :). oh gosh, my fugue was a bit atrocious so I wanted to spare your ears 😂. The preludio is amazing, have fun with that! that's actually a great question-- I actually switched teachers between the Tchaikovsky and my college audition, and he felt that the Tchaikovsky was well out of my reach for my level at the time. He was absolutely right, I still don't know if I'm equipped to approach it even now! So, we decided Mendelssohn would be my best bet, and I'm thankful that was the decision :).

@@SophieCViolin I see! It definitely is a better option to go with something you can play very well, even if it isn't the hardest thing in your repertoire. That fugue is like the pinnacle of intonation traps, so I don't blame you. I've worked through about the first page of it, and it's bloody tough to make it sound like music instead of a double stop study similar to Kreutzer #42.

Could you share some tips of how do you practice? I've been playing cello for 3 years and I'm 26. I didn't practice much, maybe an hour a day, but last year it was 2,5 h and since march it's been 5 hours a day. I work hard on scales, broken thirds etc, but I don't see the results when playing pieces...

hi! that's so great you've been playing cello- and WOW 5 hours a day is a lot!! I think it is amazing you are practicing scales, thirds, etc because those are crucial and often skipped to practice pieces right away. i know it can be so frustrating to not see results, but also keep in mind that the better you get, the more details and mistakes you will notice. it's very possible you are improving a lot, but so are your ears as they look out for fine details. Keep up your work on scales and etudes (VERY slowly. like painfully slowly) and I promise you results are happening even if it's hard to notice. hope this helps, and good wishes to you!

Mindful practice, actually think about what to improve when you’re playing instead of just doing it. Edit to add this quote from Leopold Auer, a renowned teacher of Heifetz, “The right kind of practice is not a matter of hours. Practice should represent the upmost concentration of [the] brain. It is better to play with concentration for two hours then eight without.”

Good professors for your area of focus, the variety of classes/majors offered, the option to dual degree, etc are all really important in making such a decision! are there any specific ones you are interested in?

Definitely not! There are many adult beginners; but even then, I know some people in conservatory who started around 12-13, worked super hard and still caught up!

@@enderless6055 hi! When I was younger I really didn’t practice much 😅. Maybe 20 minutes a day, and gradually I went to about an hour as I got older. Now I do ideally 3 per day (not including rehearsals and such)

Very nice, but whomever told you to play Mendelssohn for college auditions did you a huge disservice. I am sorry your repertoire wasn’t chosen better! That is the exact opposite of a good audition piece.

thank you for your comment, but it is far from the fault of my teacher that I played Mendelssohn for my auditions. I decided very late into my high school days to pursue music, and Mendelssohn was the only concerto I could really play through at the time. There are certainly "better" audition pieces out there, but I did not have the luxury of options back then, sadly.
