The Time to Lime is when the soil is bare.
The Time to Lime is Now!
The effects of agricultural lime on soil are:
1. it increases the pH of acidic soil (the lower the pH the more acidic the soil); in other words, soil acidity is reduced and alkalinity increased
2. it provides a source of calcium and magnesium for plants
3. it permits improved water penetration for acidic soils
4. it improves the uptake of major plant nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) of plants growing on acid soils.
Dolomite lime may be used as a soil input to provide similar effects as agricultural lime, while supplying magnesium in addition to calcium.
It can also be used as an insect repellent, without causing harm to the pest or plant.

HGV, Really enjoyed the clip of the dog competition..it’s really something when you watch a sight hound do their thing. Are both of the dogs Greyhounds? I’ve seen Borzoi’s compete in similar events. Your shots in “slo-mo” do a great job of showing how muscular and aerodynamic these dogs are...thanks for sharing! Cheers!

for one split second I thought you said you added wine! I hugged my bottle tightly just in case. Delighted to confirm my hearing is dodgy and that all you needed was lime! Phew 😛👍🏻🙏🏻

I add lime every year recently, first to kill the moss in the back garden, then when I got blossom end rot, I added it to the pots of tomatoes, but I neglected the front garden, I get moss there too. It takes a while to work, but if you add lime, the moss will be gone, so the front garden will be limed too :)

Lovely to see you and Molly, enjoy In the garden. Watching your grandsons training the dogs, brought back memories of my dad, training his greyhound this way. Thanks for sharing, love to Molly.

We always added a little lime and a handful of manure under each plant. We had an incredible garden!! My neighbor raised Greyhounds. He used to exercise them by driving and holding onto their leash out the window. It didn't seem safe to me, but we did live on a deadend road.

I love the sighthounds so much. Some people argue that border collies would be considered sight hounds if they weren't working dogs.

Since large amounts of rain can leach Ca and Mg from the soil, adding lime on top in the fall is a great way to prevent a deficit.

The races were fantastic! It's good to see the boys involved in something like this. Fern, was wagging her tail so hard at the end there, she was lopping sideways to get back. lol It's obvious that the boys and their wonderful dogs enjoy the games. I need to get a meter to test my soil, my root veggies don't do so well. Thank you for the garden tips once again. Would you give us an update on Molly please? How is she doing? Best to you and yours.

When you mentioned insects, I'm wondering whether it'll reduce my slug/snail population by interrupting the egg cycle near the surface for a while. I'm going to try this once I'm finished harvesting in a few weeks here (usually pull my potatoes and garlic around Thanksgiving here in Newfoundland). Thanks for all your great instructionals with Molly! Neat to see the dogs in action too :-)

Can you just add egg shells because they are full of minerals and calcium? I keep all my eggshells and dry them then grind them in my mixer and apply to my garden.

The greyhound breed is an ancient hunting breed. We had a Whippet, a kind of miniature greyhound. Apache was the fastest dog I ever saw. She must have lived 20+ years.

A wise move to add calcium to the soil. Many times, when limestone is left out of soil, especially acidic compacted soil, nutrient and water uptake is severely hampered. Many garden plants do not need as much limestone. Potatoes do suffer when limestone is added at planting time. Potatoes prefer to grow in an acidic soil (6.5-7 pH)so many times flowers of sulfur is sometimes used.
