Good video! I want to share a tip with you I learned from growing orchids. (They are notorious for needing staking.) Save the larger pieces of styrofoam you get in packages. Cut a piece to fit the bottom of the pot. It will help with drainage and helps hold the stakes upright when you poke them down into it.

In studies adding a separate layer is VERY bad for drainage as it causes water pooling. I've done some tests and found this to be true. Its best to have a continuous layer.

Excellent video! I have been growing them for 30 years and through experience, learned their growing habits as you described. I started with just one (Apple Blossom) and grew the rest from seed after pollinating them. Rather than starting them in water, I sowed the seeds like grass seed. The resulting pot looked like a lawn with 100s (1000s?) of leaf blades! I was so pleased to see you plant some of your bulbs in a long plastic container (I LOVED the idea of putting kindling at the bottom of the container rather than stones--I'm going to start doing that, too!). I've been growing my bulbs like that for many years (in addition to standard pots). I learned one thing about growing them in those long containers: Plant the bulb so that when the straps grow, they grow against one another to give one another support versus having the straps grow outward overflowing the pot sides. It also makes for a neater-looking container. I'm glad I found your site. I've subscribed and I look forward to more of your videos! Thanks from Mike in Washington, DC, 1/5/2024.

I just purchased 6 pots of amaryllis from Walmart after Christmas for $1.25 each. I was thrilled to find them. I always bought new ones every year, but now because of your wonderful detailed instructions I know I can have my beautiful flowers twice a year for many years. I live in Idaho & when I moved into this house there were iris & day lily plants that they left in the garden year round even though the snow. They come back every year!! I can't believe they lived through the freezing temperatures. After seeing this video I will give them some extra love this year. I did fertilize them in the spring, but they were never even cut back when done flowering. I've been reading up on care for them to continue they're growth, but your video was the best!! Thank you for showing us how to get the most for our money & beautiful flowers for years to come I am now a new subscriber

Thank you for this video. I couldn't get mine to bloom, now I know why,lol! My mother was very successful with amerylus, but instead of fertilizing with "store bought" she would use her leftover dishwater. After the water was cooled down, she would water all her plants(she had many) with a little bit of that water. The leftover soap would keep spider mites and gnats from getting into the soil. The small particles of food in the water would fertilize the plant. She always had beautiful house plants!

I enjoyed watching your video about amaryllis bulbs and storing for winter. I never had any success with my bulbs for years. They tended to reduce in size. I live in the State of Wisconsin on a hobby farm. I decide to plant eight bulbs in the spring outside after the last frost. The bulbs were planted in rich pure manure soil from my horses, mulched the bulbs and were planted in full sun. I let mother nature do the watering for me during the summer. Dug up the bulbs before the first frost. Cut the green growth, trimmed the roots and stored them away. You wouldn't believe that the bulb doubled in size. Mother nature gave me beautiful bulbs. Some were ready for Christmas time others were ready later in the season of Winter. My amaryllis blooms were so huge and bright in color. I learned myself that having the best pure manure you can give your bulbs was the secret to my success. I now have the original bulbs for eight years with offsets over the years. You have Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

KZfaq and videos such as this one has opened my eyes and my mind to push the boundaries and try different things. You can not fail. You only gain more knowledge. Thank you for posting this video. I did what they say and put it outside to gain energy and then I put it in a paper bag in a thermos bag and slapped it into my fridge. I was so excited to see it take off with leaves and a bloom stalk right away. I was almost right on with the timing as it is Dec 31 and it started to bloom a few days ago. Only missed x-mas by a few days. I suffer with depression and anxiety and I will say that getting this to work has giving me so much joy. Sorry for my life story ramblings.

As for drainage ....I use mesh produce bags filled with pebbles when I don't have drainage holes.. end of year they separate easily. Thanks for all the great tips!!!!

Watching in early in 2022, gifted with amaryllis waxed bulbs for Christmas 2021. First time experience. I live in Canada. Saskatoon Saskatchewan and am a apartment dweller. No garden. The tips today were helpful. Will pursue ongoing experiences with these plants.

I would love to learn how to cross-pollinate and try to grow some from seed. For some reason I thought compost would burn the roots obviously I was wrong.
@suburbanhomesteaderwy-az3 жыл бұрын
It totally depends on the compost. You can cross pollinate very easily by using a paint brush.

I only use small rocks or pepples in glass at Christmas time , after they bloom I plant in my garden and they come back around Easter time . I pay about 20 per bulb so take great to have them come back every year .

Thank you. I will try the pebble idea when I need to repot them.

I am going to plant amaryllis after watching your video, thanks. I once planted them outdoor, they attracted or got so many some kind of huge grasshoppers in the spring all over entire area. It was unsightly. But l will try potting in pot, it is beautiful flowers.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge of amaryllis. I’ve learned several new things. My amaryllis has bloomed beautiful for 2 years, but this year only produced big leaves and a baby. Now I now what to try next, thank you.

Hi from Ireland ....I love Amaryllis...and this video is most informative....I grow the Red or bright coloured Amaryllis successfully outdoors but the white ones I keep indoors ..... Only problem we would have would be Slug Protection....I have never stored the bulbs like you do ...but I am going to try that ....Like the Long stake idea also....ThankYou so much.....Ann☘️☘️

Hi Ann, I just love Amaryllis, we don't have much of a slug problems here, hot summers and garder snakes love to eat them. Hope you have a great weekend.

In Mexico when you put them in the ground the big roots will pop up more Amarillo bulbs all over the garden or planter and just like cala lilies the roots create other tubers sometimes away from the mother bulb something like strawberries do but underground. Love your video, thx so much!

I like you use the soil over and over.
@jamesgause95467 ай бұрын
Tip! Instead of mentioning the store the viewers can get your soil band you like from , just say box store , then box stores will approach you to use them and get you a little money with each showing on an episode. You may already do that, but just a thought. MG.
