Very interesting. I came here because I was thinking about growing a tree. I never realized that there was such a variety. Or that so much work was involved. I think I'll stick with store bought!

Came across your website, it's by far the best information I've found on trying to grow avocados. Lots of contrary information out there as far as advice about growing avos like those "this is how you transplant into the ground" videos that tell you to put in soil breaker and amendments and things that will turn your planting hole into a water sinkhole - they show you how they plant them but they never show you if their trees are still alive 2 years later. At least you have proof on your site on how your avos are thriving. Keep up the good work. I'm in North County btw...

That made me laugh . . . because it's so true. I've made a commitment to only talk about what I know, not what I'm experimenting with (with only a couple of rare exceptions). The downside for me is that I don't produce very many articles or videos. The upside is that whatever I do publish is trustworthy. That's the goal anyway. Thanks for the comment. North County is a great place to grow avocados (and mangos), as I'm sure you know.

@@gregalderdotcom yeah if I can get mine to survive :) I posted a question on your website regarding planting... going to go check the site and see if you wrote anything about getting a better balance on your tree. My new 15g Hass has more growth on one side with weak flimsy little limbs on the other, I remember you mentioning Hass has a tendency to grow that way. Cheers!

I did answer the planting question on the website. Hope you've found it. Unfortunately, almost all the trees we buy are imperfect but they usually fill out well within a couple years -- sometimes with the help of pruning.

@@gregalderdotcom I decided to put it in the fast draining hole, backfilled with as much native as I had left put in a raised bed and got it half in a hole half above the soil in raised bed. I am wrecked, that wasn't easy specially with how heavy it was with the recent rains. Anyways shot a video i'll put it together and let u know :) Cheers!

Posted this on your website... Greg - I came across your site too late. I’ve had two holes prepared for two trees now - avocado and mango and I was getting my info from the antiquated “dig a hole and put in compost and amendments” and I have clay soil. One hole has good drainage - about 2 hours. One took 15 hours. I can dig out most of the half/half mix and refill with half native and the mix. Can I get away with putting a raised box and the avocado tree. I’d like the mango to go in the good spot as it has a deeper fuller root system but I’m afraid of killing my avocado in the clay hole. Thanks again, you are a saint in my book.

Hi, Greg. Very nice and informative video. Here from Tenerife, Spain. Question: as I see, you prefer micro sprinkler irrigation to drip irrigation. Why? I do also. Thanks in advance for your answer.
@gregalderdotcom
@gregalderdotcom 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Javier, The main reason I mostly use micro-sprinklers on my avocados is that I like the broader distribution of water and therefore roots. It gets very hot where I'm at so I figure that a broader root zone will help the trees tolerate spells of high heat and low humidity better.

My grandparents have one similar to your reed & it's not looking good this year. Top branches are drying up, leaves are falling of leaving bare branches at peak areas of the tree. Now around the trunk of the tree they have they have about 3 feet of mulch around the base of the tree, but my grandma has also big rocks also in the mix. encircled around the avocado tree are some big blocks of stone some use for edge gardens piled 3 high enclosing the trunk & mulch like a fort. And they have the rest of the area bricked off all around & beyond the tree, so there's actually no soil to see. Would this be some concern as to the well being of the avocado tree. I mentioned this to my grandparents but you know how older ones are, it's there way, what do I know, ha. I just recently removed a couple of bricks to dig to look at the soil, they had sand on top between brick & dirt. The soil was really compact & dry, nothing like your soil. Plus about 6 feet away they have a vine that's pretty much competing with the avocado tree as to size, but this vine wraps itself around whatever it's in contact with it looks like a boa constrictor all around, would this also be a concern.

Do I need to cover my 6 foot avocado tree in the 100 degree heat of summer here in La?
@gregalderdotcom
@gregalderdotcom 6 жыл бұрын
Is that Los Angeles or Louisiana? Either way, no need to cover a mature tree such as yours in 100-degree heat. Avocados take 100 degrees fine as long as they're healthy and well-watered. When that kind of heat is predicted to hit, the best thing you can do is give the tree a bunch of water the day before.

Hi Greg I just got a 3 feet tall grafted Hass avocado tree as a gift. I am in San Jose Ca zone 9. You inspire me to have this tree. I am very excited. I just put it in ground 3 days ago. It has 4 baby avocados. The size of the trunk is 1.5 inches. I am not sure how old it is. The nursery told me to cut off the fruits so the tree would focus on growing the roots. Should I do that? It’s my first fruits tree so I am very nervous. Please help.

@gregalderdotcom 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Tracy, I'm excited for you. I would remove those avocados. Give it good care this summer and next year it should be big enough to hold fruit. If you leave them, the tree is unlikely to grow very much this year.

Thanks. If you came to my yard, you'd find that some look great but not all. They have their share of imperfections, as does their caretaker -- me! Anyway, the trees in the video were planted in 2013 or more recently. I'm in Ramona, north inland San Diego County. It's a climate not too dissimilar from Santa Clarita, actually. I'm certain that some avocado varieties do well in your general area although I can't be sure about your specific yard and its micro-climate. Never know until you try . . . although don't wait much longer since it's a watering and sunburn challenge to plant avocados in the summer in places that get over 95 frequently.

Greg Alder wow there pretty old. yes, I already encounter that. I tried to put my avocado in my courtyard in a spot that only gets direct sun about 3 hours of the day the rest is shade but really bright and it did not like it there and got sunburned so I had to move it to the side of my house where it only gets afternoon sun ot seems to love it there. Its in a container so I can move it in if we get frost. Thanks for replying. They look great not is perfect, that's what gives it character and makes it unique, just like their caregiver. ☺👍

Garden Love there’s a Arizona variety avocado that can handle colder temps than other varieties seems odd Arizona gets extremely hot yes and they have cold winters so the variety can handle heat and cold. Young avocado trees need protection from the sun by whitewashing the trunks and branches or sun shade and tons of water especially when the Santa Ana winds drop the humidity to single digits avocados need tons of water during this times I’m in Southern California around the 15 and 60 interchange my yard gets the wind like crazy I’m at base of a hill with watering I can keep all my leaves on my trees through the Santa Ana season. I will comment again where to find the Arizona variety

Hi there I just happened to find you tonight, and I'm assuming from the video...that you're in So California...like me? , I have a youngish avocado tree (not completely sure of the type) It seems to be growing pretty good, but it's kind of branching out in different dirrection and I was wondering how to prune it...or if that's what should be done? It seems to make tiny little "wannabee" avocado's, but they never really mature (it's almost as if the tree is practicing how to make fruit, when it eventually grows up)...lol Anyways, I was wondering if it would be possible to send you a couple of pictures of my tree, so you could tell me what I should be doing...or not doing? Please let me know, if you get the chance Thanks~K~

Dude hard to find info on planting avo trees. Planted a Lamb Hass and a Fuerte in the soil here in San Clemente, CA. Soil is very clayey in my view. I dug down 5 feet and about 4 feet around. The trees are ten years old. I put gravel in the bottom of the hole and then filled with looser topsoil and dug a 1 foot deep and ten foot wide pan around the hole filled with the top soil. Just planted the trees the other day and have french drains in them, but just worried and feel like i should add dirt below the root ball and lift the trees up higher than ground level. Any thoughts? Dig your website used it a lot and i think u mentioned mounding for clay soil

It so happens that I just wrote an article about how much and how often to water avocados: gregalder.com/yardposts/how-much-and-how-often-to-water-avocado-trees-in-california/ There's nothing wrong with watering with a hose for five minutes, except that if the tree is big that won't be enough water.
