@Jack Hoff It's funny to every geologist and architect, that people actually think building on sand was a bad idea. Sand is a very stable and compressable surface to build upon. You want to walk away from anything biological like forest ground that will decompose, but sand is just fine...at least when there is no water source eroding it from underneath.
@syberphish
@syberphish 3 жыл бұрын
@@heyrod59 Then building should probably be built with an eye to the future, don't you suppose? When I had the well drilled on our property, they took into account where the water might rise to during a "the worse flood for a hundred years" and had me put it there accordingly. Because of what MIGHT happen, decades in the future. That people will know what's coming in the future and overlook it to make the quick money, and townships are okay with that is really the issue.

The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it didn't fall, for it was founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of mine, and doesn't do them will be like a foolish man, who built his house on the sand. The trees had nothing to do with how these cliffs naturally erode. It is the surf under cutting the cliffs, allowing gravity to pull it down. Would still happen even if the trees the were there were still there. This case is some what man made (somewhat "man made" as the surf is still doing what it does in the erosion process) in that the drainage pipe started releasing water in the ground due to a leak, speeding up the process. No leak, or no pipe at all, and the cliff would have taken much longer to start collapsing. EDIT: Corrected "poll" to "pull" and changed "mage" to "made"

Yes…erosion is a normal process and it happens everywhere and it’s also not caused by “climate change/global warming”. Erosion has been happening since long before fossil fuels were used…long before humans walked the planet….and erosion will continue to happen no matter what people try to do to stop it. Houses and buildings should never be allowed built near the coastlines…and we need to change laws preventing this building from occurring.

Keep in mind that when these units were built they were well back from the cliff edge and even had a large yard between it and the edge. Unusually large storms in the late 1990s destroyed most of the space and the path leading down to the beach where the "sinkhole" is. That route down to the water has been rebuilt several times in different forms over the years. Last time I was there to go surf fishing the apartments were still standing, but they are no longer.

why is everyone giving this story a thumbs down? Would you rather not know what's happening? I mean, I'll grant we need to address that issue and If I owned that property I'd be dumping urbanite over the edge every day, but I'm glade this is being reported.

You know... Sand. Sand is eroding. Water... Sand... Why is anyone surprised. Jesus even gave guidance in the Bible on this topic."But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” Matthew 7:26,27. I just hope no one get's hurt.

"Ocean Air" is somehow a more comforting name for an apartment building, under the circumstances, than "Cliff's End?" Hmmmm. Ocean . . . and Air. Yep. Your new open air apartment with its um, inground salt-water pool, convenient for swimming and fishing . . .

I like the man they interviewed. He shared his precious memory and recalled the changes to the bluff though the decades. If you were to look at these buildings from a drone's bird eye views you can see how ridiculous that people chose to build at the very edge of these basically eroding sandy bluffs. Mother of Nature has been working on this coast eons.

When they were built. the edge of the bluff was 50 feet away from the buildings. They were sold to cheeseballs moving to CA from the east coast, because no native Californian would touch them.

I had a summer job as a carpenter back in the early 1960s and worked on several of those houses on top of the cliff and one of the apartment complexes on another cliff. I remember thinking that it was a l-o-n-g way down. The wind blew so hard that I remember thinking that wind erosion was bad enough much less water erosion. And to think that those ticky-tack track homes sell for well over a million dollars now. You can have it.

Cliff "that has been eroding away for decades". No kidding. A geologist back at the time these apartments were considered would have told them (and probably did) that this would happen. But, developers rarely listen to anything but money.
