Container Garlic. Has there ever been a more perfect crop to grow in pots or containers? As a perfectly predictable crop, garlic is so well-suited to container growing that once you give it a try, you may never grow it any other way!
Today, let's talk about everything we need to know to grow garlic in containers successfully. There are some issues we need to look at when growing in smaller setups such as exposure and drainage...but nothing we can't solve.

When I have a plant that doesn't need a deep pot, I fold over the top edge of a fabric part, reducing the height/depth a few inches. If I later decide I need a deeper pot, I just unfold the edge. An extra benefit is it provides a good 'handle' for moving the pot, more durable than many actual handles.

Hello sir. As a northerner who is in zone 5b, my tip for container garlics in colder climates is to bring them into your garage from late fall until late winter when the temps start creeping up toward spring and they'll grow just fine.

@TheEarthCreature
@TheEarthCreature 10 ай бұрын
@@robertcanavan6600 Hey Robert. If you don't have a garage then my suggestion is to cover them and depending on your situation you either bury them or you can try wrapping the pots in an insulating material then covering them. Fun fact is if it snows you can let the snow cover the tarp as well because snow is surprisingly insulating as a material.

Glad this can be done in the later months. We use a ton of garlic so growing our own seems like a great idea. We don't usually get too cold in SE Texas so there's never really a risk of freezing them to death. Hopefully gets just cold enough to get them started. Its usually pretty warm here til maybe a week or two in February.

It's your homemade mix with most of your suggested amendments. 2) My garlic will sprout immediately. Do I still only fertilize twice? And if so, is it still 6-8 weeks before harvest? Thank you so much! Going to wash my pots and get ready to plant garlic this week.

This was excellent! Parents could be teaching their kids how to do this every fall with little to no maintenance over the winter. Schools could be doing this as the school year begins. Imagine doing this as the 6th Grade School year begins and carries over when 7th Grade begins by asking and writing about how their Garlic did and having everyone plant new garlic from their crop. If their crop did not make it then the student should have included that in their report and they get another clove from the teacher or friend. If new to the school everyone could give a welcoming garlic clove to start the same way. Its great to teaxh learn about how to read, how to write, and how to do statistical formulas to figure out the quantum differential of the sub-atomic particle length between billions of random particles in a one dimensional world. Ok maybe not that last one. It does seem to me that there is a current spark that is lacking in adults and that spark is thinking about things long term. What has happened to the Garlic from Grade to Grade to Grade. And in this lesson all truly are winners because someone who’s garlic failed and it looks like it is due to lack of interest is a success because growing things is not their thing but they tried. And that seed is still planted for use 50 years later when they say… - Our grocery bill was how much? Let me see. Half the stuff we could have gone without. $10.00 for Garlic?! It’s easy to grow. No more buying of garlic. We’re growing it! It’s easy. They taught us in Grade School. - And with those words a school bell would ring and a Teacher would get comfortable shoes on their way to teaching heaven.

The only garlic that I could find was a soft neck variety. It looked like old stock from last year. My community garden bed is basically like a rather larger container that's about 8 inches deep built on top of legs. I keep forgetting to take my tape measure to get the length and width; but, It's about 8 feet long and maybe 3 1/2 to 4 feet wide. Our winters get cold and our summers can get pretty warm. The city is going to move the community garden to a different location so that the developer can either built a parking lot or another apartment building. This was my first year trying to grow garlic and after watching your video, I can see a few things that I would probably do differently.

Still getting the hang of it. For hot areas like cement patios, leave some leaf litter and wet that when watering. Straw multch is the way. Consider adding a handful to the potting soil. Helps with texture and moisture retention. Also companion plant some chamomile. Scatter some seeds before applying mulch

So great to hear Doyle! Spinach is quite easy....quick crop too. Shallow-rooted, quick to germinate, and quick to mature. Don't keep it too wet, but also doesn't fair well in the heat.

Hi, I enjoy and learn so much from your videos. All my planting is done in bags and containers. The one thing you didn't talk about is the scapes from a hardneck garlic. When planting garlic in containers do you still get scapes? This will be my first try at planting garlic. i live in NJ zone 7

The pink garlic I planted 3 weeks ago in the garden is not growing regularly, so I bought 2 different kinds (purple and a different pink) to plant in 35 liter grow pails (€4.04 each). I'll fill the bottom half with municipal compost that I get for free. It's not fully mature, so it will finish maturing there, and then I'll add mostly garden soil, a bit of mature compost and sand for the top layer for the garlic roots. I might make a few more pails of white and elephant garlic if I can find some. Pink and purple are local varieties that keep well. One thing I do differently than you do is I wash the garlic head after harvest, to remove any dirt from it: Most of the pathogens that make garlic rot during storage come from the soil, so I wash it off in the morning of a sunny day so the bulbs dry immediately. I also like to thread the garlic stems together once they're fully dry. It makes a nice bunch to give away to family and friends. Yah, looks like I won't have enough for me and next year planting now, need to make more pails, come to think of it... I also have 7 buckets of potatoes ( different kinds) that will be ready to harvest before Christmas. October has been such a warm month here (actually, the warmest since we started monitoring temperatures in France). There's been a few cold nights since, but still above freezing), so I put empty pails in reverse over the potato pails to protect them from cold. I also filled the pails with soil to the rim last week, it should add more protection, if not more soil to grow potatoes.

We've had crazy warm and wet weather atm. Yesterday, it was 22c during the day and 14c at night in London! I currently have the bulbs sitting in the fridge until it is ready to plant. We planted them at the beginning of Nov last year but it was far too early.

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms yes indeed. We have a handful of green strawberries on one of our June plants! So weird. What is now normal, these past few years is spring bulbs coming up in October. I never know whether to cut them back. It's just green and then in winter we start getting flowers. When we planted the garlic, the shoots already came through in Dec. I think that we also planted them too deep. Brimwood farm in Suffolk, UK (SE England), said that they planted them in Jan. The existing zone/frost website isn't great and not sure how up to date it is but it says our first frost date is 1st Jan for our area. Heavy rain destroyed our tomatoes through blight. I was hoping to take a sucker to over winter. We just got back from the Isle of Wight clearing out our late mother in law place during the holiday week. We also had to have our rear gutters replaced. Typical roofers starting with a quote of £450 and ended up with a £1100 bill! Also, the same thing. They take off the gutters before telling you this! They also didn't have the big van in the pictures and just a Postman Pat van turned up without the gutters to start with! Hubby was mugged off. This was his task and if I was available I would have picked up on this. The fact that they asked for a screwdriver, would have been a nope from me! Anyway, we now have some nasty half white pvc facsia. No mention of bird flu running rife here and I didn't like the way that the main guy was talking to his employee. One point he called him Rodney (only fools and horses ref). Treading on our hose that we removed out of the way only to be reconnected in a hose pipe ban. Was also a wood prop. Our garden table was a work bench. I couldn't record for yt as it was so triggering. I told hubby to sort out and he said that I was already out there. If it was down me I would have turned them away before the project even started.... We refurbished our house top to bottom. I thought that my hubby would have picked up a thing or two during this process. I was 32 weeks pregnant when we moved in. We started with the kitchen and had the electrics and plumbing sorted first. So glad we only had 2 days there with a gas leak! Anyway, just when you can concentrate on the garden and plan, after heatwaves and drought. Still holding up hubby to the new bedding frame. Waiting until we can finalise the house with a new driveway and turn the main bed into a fully raised bedding area with the "crazy paving".
