Green Sapote is a delicious Tropical fruit that is reported to be Semi cold hardy in California.
In this video, I compare the the growth habits of grafted vs Seedling trees.

Thank you. Great video. Yours is yet another data point that the green sapotes grafted onto a mame sapote are simply awful in the California climate. I have seen this first hand, as well as numerous other reports online, both in Central/Northern California and Southern California. There would be a great market for mature green sapote grafted onto green sapote seedling rootstock here.

When you get a chance, I’d love to see an update on the seedlings. I have read that seedlings tend to be more vigorous than grafted trees, so it doesn’t surprise me that the seedling is growing faster, but how much faster it is growing does impress me. It’s already large enough to accept grafting! Might be interesting to see mamey sapote can graft onto green sapote. Might be able to grow that here as well. Maybe even sapodilla. Would also love to hear what method you used to propagate the green sapote seeds.

I’ll be putting out an update soon but I can tell you my one year old seedling is at 6 ft tall, my grafted tree is only about 18 inches

@@TropicalGardenGuy Six feet?! That’s incredible! I thought my mango and avocado seedlings were aggressive growers, but wow…. If you ever decide to graft onto that seedling, please record your efforts. Green sapote has been on my radar for a while, but I’ve never seen a California grown tree offered for sale. Just the Florida grafts on mamey sapote rootstock.

My friend has several 30-40’ tall green sapote trees grown from seeds. He’s in Hawaii and trees are close to 20 years old. None of them have flowered yet. I also have a nice seed grown green sapote tree in ground and I’m going top work it next year so I get fruit within a reasonable time

Hey Jeff! I became a fan of eating Mamey Sapote earlier this year, but because our Phoenix AZ climate is so harsh I'm opting to try and grow Green Sapote as well. Same routine as you, with one seedling and one grafted. I think I'll wait until the spring to plant mine, but I'm very curious to see how yours develops, as well as mine. Best luck to you, I look forward to future updates.

Hi Jeff! Great timing for me in finding your video. I just put a seedling in the ground today in Melbourne Australia, slightly colder than your area. I also found achacha to be quite hardy, unexpectedly so. Cheers

I love the look of those green sapotes but can't even source seeds over here lol. I've read that once they are a bit established they will probably tolerate drops to 32f. Lets be honest all named varieties of fruits were originally grown from seed so you might easily end up with a decent plant and fruit eventually 🤞

How much sun do Green Sapotes need? What and how much fertilizer have you been giving your seedling? You purchased 10 green sapote seeds and only one survived?
@TropicalGardenGuy
