Growing, Harvesting and Eating Maypop. Also known as hardy passion fruit or passiflora incarnata, purple passionflower and wild passion vine. I finally harvested a few in my northern organic garden and decided to film it. Let me know what you think. Also tell me in the comments if you grow or ever tasted them.

How many vines do you let grow from the ground on your maypop? Is it like a grape where you only have 1 main cain until it reaches the trellis and then let the laterals grow?

Maypop is native to the Houston area so I don't know how you could be much further south, commenting in english, and have any trouble growing them.

Mine are home to a butterfly species which lays it eggs on the leaves, brutal in appearance the caterpillars r a vibrant reddish orange color and consume the leaves to grow then pupate eventually becoming new butterflies to carry on

This is the first year that I have had maypop produce fruit. I planted it from seed last year. When the fruits drop from my vines there is no slimy pulp. There is just a dry web of seeds. Is this typical of first year fruit?

My mom uses the may-pop fruits to make passion fruit jam. You don't even need to add pectin to make it.

I've had one of these growing in a pot for over a decade... think the most it's ever done is get 2 flowers on it one year. it doesn't seem to sucker at all either.

they do well here, in Arizona, once established. But, there's a caterpillar that will eat them to the nub. When found, we use a sharp twig to get rid of them because they carry a mild toxin.

I live in Tennessee. I spied a single purple passion flower bloom on a vine while mowing the fenceline of our field yesterday. It was nearly straggled with kudzu and the vine was growing low to the ground. We have to mow weekly and spray yearly the kudzu to keep it from overtaking our field. I want to move these three vines and transplant them somewhere in my yard. Any advice for doing that?

@@randyjones4044 Yes, I did dig them up. I transplanted and they came back this spring, however, out of the blue, they died about 2 weeks ago. No clue as to why. Maybe juglone from black walnut got to it.

Family in N. Carolina tell me the best herbicide for kudzu is hungry animals. Everything seems to like the leaves and pigs will tunnel to China looking for the roots. They do a good job on bindweed, too. I'm in Arizona and we never had a problem with kudzu. If it ever showed up, it wouldn't last long LOL. Bindweed, tho, is a different problem but pigs love it. I was given a maypop about 6 years ago. I get a few flowers every year but not a single fruit. I live in NJ and have honeybees on my property. What am I doing wrong? It’s not very big. I mulch it and it does completely die back every year. Second question - I just happened across a house a few blocks away that is going up for sale that has massive maypop vines with tons of plump green fruit - can I pick it green off the vine and let it ripen off vine? I won’t have access to the vine later in season when they ripen.

This kind of plants Are in many different states including New York New Jersey some part of Canada and in some of the southern states like Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky. Etc. Most of these plants grow in the wilderness it is a plant that doesn’t need to much care Except by the butterfly’s eggs But other than that they are very strong plants

They grow all through the south with vines 50-60 feet. They do grow farther north but are stunted.

yes you can , check usda zone for canada and google passiflora incanata usda zone. as long as your seeds are viable it will sprout.

I hear so many people saying maypops are basically weeds and grow all over the place, but out of over thirty years on this rock, I have seen them only once in person. The ones I saw were plentiful and covered a section of field, yet didn't shade out everything. They were rather small-leaved and the fruit turned a yellow color when ripe and tended to remain attached to the vine even when ripe. I live in a state where they "should" be plentiful, but my observations are saying otherwise. I ordered a transplant a year ago but it didn't make it. I'm kind of reluctant to order seeds due to hearing how much of a pain they are to get sprouted. I wasn't aware they need different genetics to make fruit, good to know. Means I probably do need to find some seeds.

@WEST TENNESSEE HOMESTEAD About a month ago I was blessed to see several maypops growing in my yard. Must have been presents from birds. One is flowering but something stole the first fruit. I marked off the area so I don't accidentally destroy them lol

I don't know if I have the same thing or not the flower looks very similar but the fruit are small and red have been growing on my fence for years and years they died back in the cold and come back when it gets warm

I suspect that is the "commercially available" fruit. Are the flowers a bit less vibrant? That would be passiflora edulis.

I`m in Ploiesti, Romania (45 degrees N, -20 Celsius during winter). I am growing in my garden, outside, protected during winter with polystirene 10 cms Passiflora caerulea and Pasiflora incarnata. They are doing well outside.

@@sbee413 Yes, they are hardy. They are just now starting to die off for winter but still green. I am in central IN, they shouldn't be this far north, so i have heard.

Very good. Do you have a green house? I was going to get a cheap popup greenhouse and use my own version of a Chinese green house blanket with some grow lights in winter. I was thinking the butterfly garden in greenhouse could pollinate all year round. Maypop have friterlary (so) butterfly

I didn't have a greenhouse at the time of making this video, I do now. The maypop is rock solid just in the ground without any protection for me still. Hoping with the greenhouse to have better look with more tropical passion fruits though.

My fruits turn orange and attract orange monarch butterfly's. Their everywhere in august/Sept (in California). The fruits don't taste good at all though in my opinion

How long did it take from sowing seeds to getting your first fruit? Is it as productive as edulis where fruited at almost every leaf node?

I didn't get any fruit the first year. I did get many flowers though and this was while it was in a pot. This here was my fruit from it's second year but first year being in the ground. I got maybe 10 fruits total off of it. I left it in the ground to overwinter outside with a bit of protection so we'll see what it does this year.

Unsually enough I got fruits from 4 out of 5 plants sowing from seed, it’s been about 6 months from sowing to fruit set. The largest one now is about the size of a chicken egg and I think that’s the biggest it will get until I plant them in the ground. How is your edulis doing and what is the variety? I bought cuttings grown of edulis Purple Possom and Red Rover from a guy on ebay, both grew like crazy in a 20 gallon pot. The roots is about the diameter of a penny now but still not one single flower on both, while the incarnata will flower and fruit when its barely 3 foot long growing from seed.

I got one 3 years ago, put her in a 10 gallon, never steamed it though, she didnt produce fruit and I left her outside she survived Virginia summer and winter 2 years but I never trained it or anything and it's super spindly and never produced anything, I dont even think it flowered. I did really abuse it tho i mean i left it out front under the roof and let it get rainwater only like it barely survived. It's still at my ex roommates. Wonder if it will throw fruit this year lmao

Have two genetically different types of this in my cold greenhouse for several years, northern Germany with mild winters til - 16 degree, they grow and flower but NEVER got fruits, even there are bees and I tried to hand pollinate. So sad, what is the reason?

Everytime I've tried, I've failed. even in the South East, even from wildstock. Eventually I'll succeed with the two I always fail at. Passion Fruit and PawPaw.

cold stratification of seeds is needed...wild plants seed want that...Keep them outside but dry for the winter months..

I have a nice colony of paw paw, here in Asheville, NC. My best success with them has been when I either planting the rotting fruit, just before winter. Or, saving the seeds in coconut core, moistened and refrigerated. The seeds need to be cold shocked and the fermentation seems important, for volume, though not critical. There are reasons for this which would require an entire video. But the most important thing is do not let them dry out.

@@Sg-bg7xp I've read that the leaves and flowers are mildly toxic. The ripe fruits are perfectly fine to eat and you can even get passion fruit leaf in some teas for insomnia or anxiety so I think they are fine! Thanks for watching!

mine grew wild in my back yard , it is many many times the size of yours and took no time flat to take over a massive area of my yard . as in i thought i killed it all last year , then this year my entire shed is covered in it . zero care to this thing i need to look into agent orange.

Я не рекомендую использовать бумажные полотенца для семян маракуйи. Иногда их бывает сложно прорастить. Я рекомендую поместить семена прямо в почву и поставить горшок на открытое летнее солнце. Что-то о солнечном свете и смене темперпарета со дня на ночь действительно помогает многим тропическим семенам прорасти. Удачи! I don't recommend using paper towels for passion fruit seeds. They can sometimes be a bit tricky to sprout. I recommend putting the seeds right into potting soil and putting the pot outside in the full summer sun. Something about the sunlight and change of temperature from day to night really helps a lot of tropical seeds sprout. Good luck!

I work on a farm in Florida, USA. Passion fruit vines grow like crazy and adapt to its environment. However be careful with it's placement because it is an evasive species and can easily become uncontrollable and choke the root systems of your other plants. The passion flower has a taproot system that can be as deep as 18 inches, while simultaneously spanning horizontally a couple of centimeters from the top of the surface of the soil. If you decide to grow it, it would do very well inside of a greenhouse for temperature and humidity control, as well as remaining well contained. The only problem with using a greenhouse then would be 'how to pollinate' your vines. You can use a small watercolor brush or makeup brush and pollinate them yourself.

I bought a package of seeds and it said "for the more experienced gardener". The variety is 'Passiflora Caerulea'. Do you have any suggestions or knowledge about this variety? I had to add....the link you have for seeds no longer exists or has moved. Either way, it's no good!

I grow those and the white flower Caerulea all the time by mistake and they're actually pretty easy to do. Just soak them in water for about a day, some say warm water, but either will work. Put 3-4 seeds in each little pot and then put that little pot in a tray with a clear plastic lid on it. Mine love 3-4 hours of direct morning sun and then filtered light the rest of the way. I use those "to go" boxes from Stone Fire Grill, all clear plastic box with connecting snap on lid, or just use any kind of clear plastic cover or lid to put over the pot and maybe with a little rock on top to keep the wind from blowing the lid off. Just keep the humidity level up on these tropical seeds and you'll do fine.

Not polinated....take a SOFT brush and do it your self...i think there is a video on it. Other eise reshresh your self on where the pollen is and where it needs to go.

These seeds can start germinating from 10 days up to 6 months. Those are maypops? I thought those were bad variety of passion fruit. They were found everywhere in one park near me.

Maybe not the BEST variety of passion fruit but much easier to grow outside of the tropics! :)
