Have you ever wondered what it takes to grow Koi big and large? In this video we will explain you the 11 factors that do have an influence on the growth rate of your Koi. With this video you know how you can optimize the circumstances to increase the growth rate!
Learn to understand all 11 factors:
00:00 Intro
00:30 #1 Food and Nutrition
02:00 #2 Feeding multiple times a day
02:41 #3 Water quality
03:37 #4 Doing regular water changes
04:11 #5 Water temperature
05:00 #6 DNA and Genetics
05:43 #7 Sufficient space and environment
06:32 #8 Oxygen
07:19 #9 Effect of age
08:08 #10 Effect of gender on growth rate
08:46 #11 Effect of water flow on growth rate
1. Food and nutrition: Most important for growth is protein. Not just protein, but protein from aquatic life. That means fish meal and for example shrimps. Make sure the main ingredient of a Koi food is Fish meal, that way you are sure most proteins in the food will be derived from fish.
2. Feeding multiple times a day: Not just once or twice a day. But try to feed 6 or 7 times a day. Doing this helps in proving small proportions multiple times a day that help to increase nutritional intake. Using an auto feeder van help you establish this.
3. Water quality: One of the basics that is really important. No ammonia, nitrate and nitrite to start with. But also a as low as possible TDS value. Which actually is one of the main drivers for growth regarding water quality.
4. Water changes: about 10 to 15% fresh water out of the tap weekly is a must. At least when the water quality out of your tap is higher than your pond. And luckily that is the case in most countries.
5. Water temperature: For good growth rates, you want higher water temperatures. 24 to 26 degrees is the best for good growth rates for young Koi up to about 2 years. For Koi older than 2 years old, 23-24 degrees is sufficient.
6. DNA and genetics: If it is not in your Koi, the Koi just won’t reach a large size or fast growth rate. It is all about the genetics in the end. Which determines the maximum growth of a Koi. But overall, all Koi can reach sizes of at least 65-70 cm.
7. The space and environment to grow in: A basic rule of thumb is to use about 1000 litres of water for each Koi. You surely don’t want to overstock your pond. For the best growth rates, I recommend to go no higher than 1 Koi for about 1500 to 2000 litres of water.
8. Oxygen: Always aerate your pond and make sure there is water sprinkling or streaming. Personally I don’t believe Oxygen is one of the main drivers that will boost the growth rate. But make sure there is never a shortage of oxygen at least.
9. Age: Younger Koi will always grow faster than large Koi, that won’t change with even the best conditions you can offer your Koi. Make sure to get the best out of your Koi in the first couple of years.
10. Gender and growth rate: what is the effect of male or female Koi on the growth rate? Watch the video and find out!
11. The effect of water flow on growth rate of Koi: the faster water flows, the higher the growth rate? Is it that simply? Personally I think this is not the case. Compare with mud ponds in Japan, some mud ponds do not even have electricity to have running pumps. But have you seen the growth rates in there? It can be impressive!
With these 11 factors you can reach maximum growth of your Koi. But remember that it is most important to provide good conditions. This will ensure healthy and happy Koi. Koi will grow by itself, as long as you do your best to maintain the circumstances as good as possible.

Welcome aboard! Thank you for your comment. It will depend on the country you live in. In Japan the growing season is mainly in the months April to September, with the highest temperatures in July and August. The only problem in Japan is that sometimes the temperatures can even get too high in the mud ponds, which can affect the eating behaviour negatively.

Great video! Learnt a lot from this. I'm from Malaysia and I have an outdoor koi pond of about 2,000 litres. At times, the weather can get very hot and the water temperature can be between 28°C to 31°C, even under the shade. Are these temperatures conducive to high growth or are they dangerous?

Thank you Steven. Yes it is possible to test the TDS ppm value. You can search for handheld testers, some Koi shops also have them directly in stock. I know from several koi videos that the soft water in Japan is very good for koi and their growth. Where I live we have very hard water which I think does influence the growth but what we have for water seems to be very healthy for them. I have never had health issues and they seem to thrive very well and are very healthy. However i have never had a koi that would set any growth records.
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right. Softer water helps to grow Koi faster. But indeed as you are mentioning, harder water levels doesn't mean it is unhealthy for Koi - it just slows down the growth because the TDS value is higher. And in the end most important is that your Koi are doing well and are healthy. Thanks for sharing and take care 👍

@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 3 жыл бұрын
Great idea to start building it next summer! I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to ask regarding your pond. Do you mean if it can harm the fish if you do transfer them to a new pond during summer time? Normally that will be ok, make sure that the water temperature is about the same in both ponds.

i have 6 koi in a 3 square feet pond. there’s a pair of 3.5”, a pair of 4-5” and a pair of 7-8” koi. does the tip of feeding multiple (6 times a day) apply for my pond? Do u reccomend it. if not. What do u suggest? Currently i feed daily. leave the food for about 10 minutes and scoop out the remainders (most of the time there isn’t any left. they’re extremely healthy and good eaters) i just never thought about feeding multiple times a day. worried about over feeding 😅 Thank you
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 2 жыл бұрын
You can apply it to any pond size, also the size you mentioned. I would honestly prefer myself to feed multiple times instead of doing it once a day & scoop out everything they don't eat. It's better to feed about the same amount spread out over the day. Same as it is better for you as a person to eat multiple times a day instead of everything at once 🙂👍

What are your thoughts on Jumbo tosai? We see Dainichi Koi 40-45cm at a high price, do you think a 25cm koi at the same age (still a good size) can catch up in time? I understand that some will always be smaller.
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 4 жыл бұрын
I believe on the longer run they can catch up. But I believe if a Koi won't grow like 80-90-100% in the first 3 years, I doubt it will reach it maximum size. What is your personal opinion on this?
@grahambowles1607
@grahambowles1607 4 жыл бұрын
@@Aboutkoi I am not sure, this year I have six tosai from Marudo, a Jumbo Mukashi Ogon that was 34cm and now 39cm, the rest Kohaku 18-25cm with only +2cm for the same time (6 weeks)… food, Saki Hikari 6 x a day, Water min 20c, 6000 gal, KH-1, GH-3, TDS 92 PH 7.1 No Ammonia, Nitrite 0.2 and close to zero Nitrate, Ogon to Kohaku is not a great example I know but time will tell, three years of age is the wall for sure if you want to get the best out of them I think.
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 4 жыл бұрын
Hmm, your conditions are good for sure. And nice low TDS value as well. I would expect more growth of the Kohaku honestly in this period of time. If it are tosai I would expect at least 0,5-1 cm weekly if the temperatures would be around 24-25 degrees. But you never know. Are they mixed up with older Koi and perhaps a little bit shy compared to the others?
@grahambowles1607
@grahambowles1607 4 жыл бұрын
@@Aboutkoi Yes they are with older Koi but active, I heat to +20c and let the pond lift with the air temperature for economy, if I am lucky I get +22-24c in the summer however UK weather is erratic to say the least, this week +14c last week +30c
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 4 жыл бұрын
That probably does have an effect on the growth rate as well. On the other hand, as long as the Koi are very health and stay clean (color-wise) I would say it is fine. If they were the only Koi in the pond, than probably the growth rate will increase a bit as they probably have more food intake & become more confident while eating. Indeed large fluctuations in temperature throughout entire Europe last couple of weeks.

@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, I recommend to feed 6-7 times per day indeed at warmer temperatures during the summer season. I honestly don't really count the minutes. It is better to just device the number of grams you can feed per day, divided by the amounts of times you are planning to feed. For example if my formula indicates you can feed 300 gram, and you want to feed 6 times a day, then just feed your Koi with 50 grams each time you feed.

Great video as usual. I saw on koiphen someone is feeding every 30 minutes, small amounts. Which way is better? 6-7 times or every 30 minutes? I can do either way since I am working from home... Thanks for the info! And also, how often should I do water changes to lower the TDS value enough? Thanks.
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, I would not recommend to feed every 30 minutes. I honestly think the intake and processing of food will take longer in order to extract most nutrients. In Japan breeders feed often around 6 or 7 times, I personally have trust that they know very well what they are doing. For that reason I would recommend to follow their approach. Of course that is my personal opinion. Lowering the TDS also depends a bit on what the value is that you get out of the tab. Usually is is lower, so usually it is fine to change water often. I recommend to do changes of about 10 to 15% each week. Never do large water changes at once, always just small amounts. Of course refreshing water regurly is better and continious refreshing is even better. If you want to change more, I would suggest to do about 5-10% daily at most. Does that help you?
@kevinh2209
@kevinh2209 4 жыл бұрын
You raised a good point on that the breeders in Japan know what they are doing, and they have been doing a fantastic job for decades. I will try that approach! You know, good timing for a video, it’s growth season. Enjoy it! 👍🏻

It will work to keep them alive. But it surely are not good circumstances for Koi to stay in an aquarium with the sizes you mention. To grow up Koi from fry (1 cm) to a few cm's large it will work. But I would advice to keep them in a larger aquarium or preferably a pond.

Can a little koi stay in a fresh water tank?

Like in an aquarium? That would be possible, but Koi will grow really quickly. Make sure you have space available for it when it becomes larger

sir how to enhance the color of the koi example red color..except sunlight
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, sunlight as you mention is probably the most important factor. Furthermore you can use food to enhance color. Food with spirulina or astaxanthine will help to improve red quality. Good idea for a video later... (noted for myself) 😊

Best thing is to find a Koi dealer or importer that can help you with this. Depending on where you live there will probably be one around your place.

@Aboutkoi

Hmmm probably because they are a bit scared. Perhaps you can try to sit low profile. And every day try to feed them a little bit close to your hands. Maybe they will get more used to you 🙂. Good luck!

Is it advisable to diet your adult koi? I mean you wont feed them for atleast once a week or so
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not a fan of that during summer time. I honestly don't believe that it is that healthy as some say. During summer koi are very active and need the energy. During winter however, it is fine to have a period without food.

just curious as to why you said using RO will increase the TDS in a pond when RO lowers TDS
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 2 жыл бұрын
That must be a mistake then. Indeed RO lowers TDS value.

Can i keep oscar in a pond where natural water ( cold water in rainy )
@Aboutkoi

Hi there, what do you mean with oscar? If you mean koi: yes it is possible in a 'natural pond'. But you surely have to make sure the water conditions are OK

Your comments on TDS are odd. I thought koi came from harder /higher TDS waters ? Also if you live in a hardwater area changing ater would have no change on TDS levels . Often my tap water is 600+/ppm
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, the lower TDS is, the faster Koi tend to grow. So in soft water koi can grow quicker. One of the reasons why in mud ponds in Japan koi seem to grow quite quickly: the TDS values are very, very low. But also this is different depending on the pond. Most have a very low value though, even under 100 ppm. An option is to make use of an reverse osmosis installation to lower the tap water ppm. Have you measured your pond? I wouldn't be surprised if the pond water will even have a higher ppm level, and that would mean you will actually lower the tds value of your pond.

@@Aboutkoi Thanks , I work in a fish shop we tend to recommend a harder water conditions for goldfish/koi. We do have DIRO units at the shop but thye are used to make salt water for marines or for some SAmerican fish. We often get TDS to 0-5ppm. Ive not tested the pond , but it does get a lot of rain water (in the UK which is very soft)
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! Koi can easily live in harder water. So it is fine to recommend this. Honestly it is also easier in harder water, simply because a pH crash is less likely to occur. But to increase the growth rate, a lower TDS will help.

@Aboutkoi

Thanks! Nice conversation. I agree it is difficult to alter hardness & pH: I also honestly do not recommend it. Usually it is fine to leave these values as-is. But if you really want to get maximum growth rate, it is surely a key factor. 😉

In fact, what you may not know is that our radical feeding in mid-summer can be so extreme that the fish sink to the bottom until their eyeballs pop out. Only the KOI that can withstand this will survive and those that can't will be eliminated. As a glimpse of this, here is a video of a secret pond in the private residence of Mr. RUKI NARITA, who has raised many All Japan Grand Champions. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mc2WhJV0xLilnI0.html The HIKARIMONO on the top left looks like it's about to drop out. Only KOI that can overcome it will be released to the world as Super Jumbo KOI.
@Aboutkoi

I don't think that really is the case to be honest. There are Koi, that get problems with their swim bladder due to overfeeding (but many, many times other reasons that cause this)
