Excellent explanation. Thank You. I will be trying this with a certain asiatic lily that I pollinated that is my favorite color of the bunch. It is sort of like a light sherbert orange color. I crossed it with the yellows and the reds and the whites, so I am excited to see how the genetics of the orange, which is my favorite, blended with the other colors. The pods are swollen and I am just waiting for them to turn brown and bust open.

Thank you for your very informative video. I got some Regale Lily bulbs that I planted in early spring. It’s now midsummer here in Melbourne and I have swollen green seed pods on my plants. I’m keen to try and grow some. I have fond memories of my grandmother’s Regale Lilies and the perfume of them filling the house at Christmas. Unfortunately mine had finished flowering well before Christmas this year. Did I plant them too early? Is there any way to make sure they flower for Christmas? I received my bulbs at the end of July and planted them straight away so they didn’t dry out. Was this too early?

Hi, there's not much you can do to influence flowering time as you can't really leave the bulbs out of the ground. You can plant them somewhere warmer or cooler if you have a microclimate. Your best bet is to grow a bunch from seed and you will find there is quite a bit of genetic variation in flowering time, I get a spread of about 4 weeks of opening time, right up until near xmas. Good luck.

I have just been given hundreds of Lilium Regale seeds. Can I speed the germination process, by putting them in the hot water cupboard between moistened paper towels, and then in the freezer for a period of time ? Would love to have some Xmas lillies at the end of the year, but perhaps being too optimistic.
@tr33guy3 жыл бұрын
Hi, if you're in the northern hemisphere, plant them outside now. If southern, wait until spring. There would be no advantage to starting them inside. And they don't need a cold period to germinate. You won't get flowers the first year from Regale anyway, you will get the odd flower in their second season then decent bunches in the 3rd year cheers.

Thank you for all the information. I was looking for info on how to grow lillie's from seed. One question: how to know if seeds are ready to harvest? I think I might harvest them too early last year as most of them are transparent.
@tr33guy3 жыл бұрын
Hi, once the seed pods start to split open at the top they are generally ripe, or you can shake the pod and hear them rattling. Seeds should be brown, not green/white.

Hi! Fantastic video with great info thanks. My Lillium longiflorum (St Josephs Lily) has made 2 seeds pods which are literally about to burst open. I am keen to try and germinate using your method. It is early Summer here (autumn starts in April in Cape Town) so I am assuming I can't sow them now while fresh - will have to keep them in the pod in a plastic bag until September which is when our Spring starts? or do you think I can take a chance and sow them now? They would then have 4-5 months to grow before going dormant...
@tr33guy4 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes they'll be fine this time of year, you should still get some decent growth before winter. Your climate would be similar to mine in NZ. Only thing is you will need to make sure they don't dry out, I usually sow into a box and put it in full shade and cover with shade cloth. Then you only need to mist every few days. Cheers.

Hi I live in NZ as well and I love lilies . I’ve just collected the lilies seeds. Can I start growing now or wait a bit later in Autumn ? Thank you in advance . Huong
@tr33guy Жыл бұрын
Hi, I would wait until late winter or spring to sow, I normally aim for start of September. That is in Marlborough, so you may be in a warmer or cooler region, but won't matter too much. You could plant now but there's not much point as even if the germinate they won't grow over winter anyway. Good luck.

If you're in the southern hemisphere now will still be fine. Just make sure they stay moist, keep them in full shade or cover with some shade cloth

Oriental seed should be sown immediately, Asiatic & Trumpet seed sown in spring (these are the ones discussed in the video). Google epigeal and hypogeal germination.

Hi Treeguy. I have some year old lillies in the garden that I'd like to move to another garden. What time of year should I do this please? Thank you
@LachlanKeown5 жыл бұрын
Hi, wait for them to die down in autumn (fall). The leaves will turn brown and then you can dig them and remove stalk. Or any time during winter. You can even transplant while they are growing if you are careful and get a decent amount of soil, but not ideal.
@maganalia5 жыл бұрын

No, flowers need to be on a live plant in order to set ripe (viable) seed. You can however use cut flowers as a pollen source.

@@greydragon12345 OK you should get lots of flowers per stem, 10+. You will have enough seed to last you a lifetime. It takes very little time to bulk up into a vast number of bulbs, I started with a couple of bulbs and now have more than I know what to do with from seed.
