In this video I am talking about how to grow lobularia aka how to grow sweet alyssum. Alyssum care is quite simple and there is a color and size for every garden. Theses spring annuals are easy to grow from seed and are usually readily available. Even though Alyssum is usually considered a spring annual, they will grow and perform well from the cool days of spring, through summer and into fall. Lobularia are actually one of the last of my annuals to die when the fall cold arrives making them the longest grower of the annuals I plant. For my climate, with hot and humid summers, I do prefer the Snow Princess Lobularia from Proven Winners, but in the spring, for smaller containers the regular seed types do just fine.

I agree, their fragrance is calming. It’s gentle and sublime. Here in SF they come back year after year and seed easily. I’m loving your spring table, beautiful.

Thank you! Lots of cute flowers to work with this spring. I've heard they are great at re-seeding in more mild climates. I've only been lucky enough to have them come back one time, but it was amazing bc they were everywhere!

Hi Jeff! I LOVE alyssum and the fragrance of them! I buy several colors every year. Since 9/11 I've planted a red, white and blue planter every year and usually use white alyssum, dark blue lobelia and a red everblooming begonia. I don't really have big enough pots for the PW alyssum unless I planted them by themselves, so prefer the 6 packs. I always love the way you add them to your various planters every year. Our irrigation water doesn't come on until mid April, so will probably wait to get some plants then, but you never know! LOL! I have a small greenhouse on the deck that I can put plants in if it's too cold, but it's much easier, and cheaper, to wait until the irrigation water is available. I'm so ready to get started on adding plants to all of my empty pots! You have a beautiful variety of plants on your table. You must have had so much fun shopping for them! Thank you so much for sharing!

Oh the doves! They just showed up Monday and set up right where they always do, which is in the tree I was filming under for this video. They enjoyed talking back when I was filming and bc of that I had to do like 10 takes of practically every sentence🤣😂 Their call is precious, but it comes through the mic extremely loud. Happy spring! 😂🕊😂💜

Wow that was unexpected. I usually live on KZfaq, but lately have been watching Netflix because with my internet it’s easier to watch. When I did finally notice you posted again I had to wait until morning to watch it. I LOVE alyssum! I did buy some proven winners alyssum last year and I noticed that they didn’t have much fragrance when it was really hot out. When it started cooling off in the fall that’s when I could really notice their fragrance. They sure did grow nice but I love the fragrance of alyssum so I probably won’t be buying them again from PW. I’ll stick with the other 6 pack varieties. Thanks Jeff. I sure did love seeing hints of spring ! Take care and God bless💚🙃

All those flowers are sooo nice to see!! I’ve got daffodils and early tulips breaking ground, and the fuck pears (Pyrus calleryana) breaking bud! Just enough to get spring fever! I usually can barely smell alyssum, but yeah it’s a great flower/ hardy annual, especially between thick flagstone steppers.

Another wonderful cool season plant u should give a try is bijou mix sweet peas ......they were bred to be bedding plants.....and bushy....not vining....they only get 16in high and wide....they like to cascade thus hanging baskets and planters are to their liking....they are vigorous and fast growing heavy bloomers.....the flowers are as large as the vining types and very fragrant and long blooming....these were one of the very few things tht i didn't lose to the storm....lol...you saw my pics so that's sayin something

Love them and have grown them for the first season in zone 8b. Can I ask what you do with them after they finish blooming? Sounds like they reseed themselves. I’m planning to grow some other annuals at their current spot and grow them at a different spot next year. Probably just need to pull them all out before they seed. Thanks!

I tried planting alyssum in window boxes. They got brown edges and looked gross as soon as it got hot out. From what I understand, Alyssum likes the cool weather but full sun. I can't imagine them looking beautiful in mid summer when it's 80+ degrees out. I couldn't understand what you were saying re the more heat tolerant ones, 'proven winners' it sounded like you were saying?? Is this a brand? A type of Alyssum? Hoping you can point me in the direction of a vigorous growing Alyssum that will be fairly heat tolerant. I love the pinks on the left of the video as well as the white. Gorgeous! Now if I can just find the right ones to plant in my flower boxes that won't turn brown edged and nasty looking in the summer.

One of my favorites as well. Alyssum and Blue Lobelia (Lobelia erinus) were always in my containers up north. Sadly, neither last through the summer here, they're pretty much winter annuals. I've tried the Proven Winners purple Alyssum and it is possible it would have survived the summer but I'll never know. The Cuban snails find them too delicious, they chew them right to the ground. 😡 And there is no way to get rid of the snails. I have literally carpeted the ground with snail bait and DE, the snails seem impervious. During the winter, the snails are less active to dormant so they don't wreak so much havoc.

I have been reading some interesting studies on the effects of feeding plants with a rosemary extract to keep pest away. Apparently it is becoming popular with growing the expensive herbs people eat and smoke. I think it needs to be fed fairly frequently in the beginning, probably way too much hassle. Not to mention idk if the stuff being used commercially is even available for retail. Damn snails!

I like them for fillers in my pots but I can't smell anything:( Are there certain varieties that are more fragrant? I've had proven winners and various other brands over the years, but I have never smelled the fragrance everyone claims they have. I think I'm immune or my nose is broken😁

Hello, I'm so sorry to write this sad comment, but Heather over at the channel 'The Kneady Homesteader' and her family were hit head-on by a drunk driver, killing her husband and seriously injuring everyone else in the vehicle. Please go by her channel if you can offer help or just to leave kind words. I'm hoping to get other plant-tubers and homesteaders to spread the word.

What exactly did you want to know that wasn't covered? I shouldn't talk about the different forms available? Seems like that wouldn't be very informative since many have different growth charectistics and climate tolerance. Nobody's paying me a dime to talk about their plants.
