Definitely, they’re perhaps one of the easiest tropical fruit trees to grow in the Central Valley.

@TropicalCentralValley I can't for the life of me find pink guavas to buy / try for the first time. My tree is doing wonderful though, I'm excited to see your fruits progression. How many passion fruit have you got set this season so far, roughly?
@TropicalCentralValley

No passion fruits yet. My vine only 2 years old; it’ll likely set fruits next year.

Nice video! About watering: I only have ground water (high in salts -> calcium, magnesium, ...) and for lot of vegetables and trees is literally poison. I assume that your water source is from the house pipe and is like rain water. I'm now thinking in saving tons of rain water to use it in dry periods. Thank you.

Thank you. Yes, my water comes from the tab, the same water that I drink. Luckily for me, my city does a phenomenal job of ensuring its clean and mostly free of harmful chemicals. A few years back, I made a video covering this topic: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLOGlNaVsNuWdZc.html

Right around this time may be good. Either that, or until next spring, around April.

Man, look how good your yard looks! Our stuff in Phoenix is jist barely getting by with our brutal summer. Our nightly lows are barely getting under 90, so it's rough. Thank you for another inspiring video.

That is pretty hot, especially at night time when the trees can appreciate some cool. Keep them hydrated and they’ll provide you with lots of the world’s tastiest fruits.

I just have my Kohala Longan fruiting this year. It aborted some of it's fruits maybe because it's her first year fruiting. I live in Modesto and the summer heat gets triple digits sometimes and have to water it for few minutes 5 times a day to keep it cool since our soil here is really loamy/sandy. My husband mulch it with wood bark, but still it gets so dry. It was a struggle. I started mulching it using tons of Arugula leaves since I have tons of Arugula in my backyard and it's just a matter of 2 weeks, it's shooting new growth like crazy. It's growing vigorously now from top to bottom. So I keep mulching it with tons of Arugula leaves after that. Your backyard is a dream come true and it really inspires me and my husband to keep going on establishing a food forest garden and grow some tropical fruit trees. I'm just curious if you sell tropical fruit trees and if so, how could we get hold of you. Thank you sooooo very much.

That’s awesome. Longan trees perform very well in the Central Valley. I know your climate is virtually identical to mine. Unfortunately, I do not sell any of my tropical fruit trees. If you are nearing or have plans to stop by the Los Angeles region, there are a good number tropical fruit tree nurseries in the area.

Wow! I have a Biew Kiew longan fruiting. Trunk is about 1 1/2 inch thick. Its first year in ground. Should I pluck the fruits to focus on growth? Or would you say that Longans might be strong enough to handle our Norcal zone 9b winters?
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley Ай бұрын
As a rule of thumb, I typically do not let my (grafted/air layered) trees fruit until year 2 or 3. However, the Biew Kiew longan is incredibly resilient and should be able to handle your climate without issues. If removing the fruits, the tree will only get stronger and produces way more fruits for you in the future.

Yes, I have a good number of trees growing in containers as I am absolutely out of space. I do not sell any of my tropical fruit trees. That said, if you’re nearing the Los Angeles region, there are a number of tropical fruit tree nurseries in the area.

Perfect timing. I just got some Longan at the asian grocer and planted some seeds yesterday. I'm in my 20's so what I lack in money I make up for in time and patience. Slowly but surely building up my tropical forest from seed in the southern Arizona desert 9b. I also completely agree with your sentiment about seedlings being very tough. I have some citrus seedling I started last summer and they survived outside with no cold protection in our coldest winter since 1979, and are handling our hottest summer on record with no problems at all. Multiple freezes and 110+ degree heat are no problem. My grafted citrus are struggling in the heat and require atleast 30% shade cloth, but the seedlings take full sun like it's nothing.

That’s awesome. The best trees are planted 10 years ago, but it’s never too late. There’s a saying that we plant trees for the next generation, as many trees survive for hundreds of years.

Hi, I follow your channel and really like your videos. I live in Tracy, California. I bought a Longan tree from LA and it is in a 25 g pot. For some reason its leaves are turning brown and drying up like a scorched leaf. Don’t know how to treat it. Could you please give me some advice. Thank you.
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley Жыл бұрын
Thank you. I’ve been to Tracy. Very nice little town. From the description, it sounds like the tree is having a difficult time adjusting to your climate. Although the growing medium that the tree was grown on in the container isn’t the greatest, the tree should be fine. Then again, it’s possible the nursery simply upsized the container, using a different growing medium right before you bought the tree. Doing so may explain the shock the tree is going through. Until it recovers, I recommend moving the containerized tree to a location of your yard that receives morning sun (until 10am), then full shade afterwards, until you see new growth. I would continue light, but frequent watering of the tree. I would avoid fertilizing the tree until it recovers.

My Kohala has always been a champ in full sun (southern exposure)--7 years in the ground. This year that's not the case. Lots of water but the cool spring followed by the shock of the sustained extreme 115+ temps have left mine looking very rough. With no break, water is not enough. Many of my trees suffered from scorching in direct sun. 70%+ shade cloth definitely makes a positive impact in these conditions when there is no natural shade. I'm now experimenting with surround wp (kaolin clay) as shade cloth is not practical with many of my mature trees. I've found shade is as important as water this year. The water out of the hose is hot no matter how long you run it or when it's on...crazy. While I have yet to see any rain this summer, no doubt we will be hit with lots of rain in winter. My plants will recover but in the meantime, I appreciate looking at your cool green yard. It's perfection!

Yeah, I’ve been eyeing your temperature and even during the night, it’s still in the 90°’s. This compared to my region, where the trees do get a break at night, during the mid 60°’s to 70°’s. I too have experimented with IV Organic’s whitewashing products as it can be used in a foliar application, but my summer isn’t as intense enough. Up and down the Central Valley, many commercial farmers do protect their citrus with foliar applications of presumably Surround WP.

Hi we have had a mild summer here in zone 10b Cerritos. We are on a 5 day 90° spell . I checked my 7 year cheremoya . Last summer it sent up four 7 foot thick branches . I put watermelon rinds at the base , hoping to get some pollination . It worked as there are 7 fruits about the size of a dime . I never got around to hand pollinazation. I hope this is the start of fruiting . I'm really getting into fig trees now . I hope you can do a short vid on what you know . Thanks
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley Жыл бұрын
That’s awesome news with your cherimoya tree. Concerning fig trees, I briefly mentioned them in my fig and jujube video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z5Z9aJmTutnFYKs.html An issue I suspect may be the lack of chill hours required by most fig varieties. Depending on the variety, fig trees need about 100 to 300 chill hours to produce fruits.
