@@mousegw2415 you’re right we should, but unfortunately in such a clandestine hobby like home mycology it’s pretty hard to get solid statistics. A pressure cooker isn’t necessary but it’s pretty damn important to avoid contamination.

(Not to say you are wrong or anything about pressure cooking. I certainly pressure cook my substrates/spawns when needed.) Literally the other day I saw a video of someone preparing coir as a bulk substrate and stating "you need to sterilize the shoebox with iso (alcohol), otherwise contams will grow" And I had to stop and think about that... like... He's going to keep doing this because he will get good results, but will likely take a very long time to realize that coir doesn't need prep like that. It's not a very nutritious substrate. I can only imagine that in 50 to 100 years, people will look back and say things like "I can't believe they thought they had to do that step *every* single time." Stay curious and experiment a little, for the sake of all of mycology

Yeah, if you do it like this you're asking for frustration. That rice will stick together and clump. Rye grain and a pressure cooker is the way to go.

naw. you inoculate a medium like that with a syringe and you're only looking at about 6 weeks.
