Growing Mushrooms on Alder Logs

I have grown dormant over the winter but I am budding out again now that spring is here. One of my early spring projects has been to start a mushroom patch or two. I have just "planted" shiitake, maitake, blue oyster, pearl oyster, turkey tail, and king stropharia mushrooms. It ended up being 2,400 plug spawn plugs and two sawdust bags worth of spawn. It has been a lot of fun and now that everything is set I get to wait and watch for the first mushrooms to show up.
For those who are interested I bought my mushroom spawn through Fungi Perfecti at fungi.com/ I'm not being paid to promote their products but they did offer me quality service so I feel happy to tell you all about them.

Greetings, very nice video. I have two things to add: don't let the logs get too dry. Nearly all places have a Summer that unattended logs won't survive without an occasional soaking. Also, inserting plugs in a spiral pattern instead of rows allows the use of significantly fewer plugs per log. The mycelium runs much better with the grain then across it. Thanks for the vid!

Glad to see you're back friend. Although I am not a big fan of mushrooms I am curious to see what sort of success you will have.

I recently started using an angle grinder with a bit adapter instead of a drill to make the holes, it goes soooooo much faster and you don't have to push on it. Plus it uses the same battery as the drill I already have, which saved some money. Good luck with your logs! The couple that I burried in leaves colonized faster than the ones I stacked, but I don't know yet if it was with shiitakes or a volunteer/competitor.

You can do this with all mushrooms and just about all of them will grow in wood chips. I have a friend who buys cheese cloth wraps up wood chips in sacks makes holes around them and puts the plugs in or soaks them in the concentration then hangs them around in the woods in shady areas if the sacks start to fall apart she puts webbing sacks from onions around them to contain them.

I was starting to wonder if I've missed some video lately. Glad to see that you're back online! You might have to fence in your mushroom crop at some point, especially if you consider selling some. I'm not really concerned about animals snacking in but more about the loss of value of your crop. Anyhow, keep up your excellent work!
