I am lucky to have good outdoor space to grow vegetables for me and my family. Many people feel that they are not so lucky as they only have a small patio at home and feel like it’s impossible to grow, they own food due to lack of space and soil. With more and more people looking to grow their own vegetables after recent events I thought it would be good to show you that even with a small patio or balcony you can still grow nutrient-dense food at home.

I helped my two elderly sisters set up balcony gardens using pots. We also used a small children's swimming pool filled with potting soil for salad greens and kale. They are so delighted at being able to grow veggies!

Hi , I agree that you can grow many different foods in the garden. I have been doing it for 16 years, and although my garden is slightly larger than this one, I grow everything from fruit trees in planters, to potatoes and over 30 different types of veg. It is doable and I would urge people to try out the potted method. I enjoyed watching the video , thanks for all of your videos, love them. Jane

I live in town on a corner lot right across from a public school! I had a truck load of wood chips brought in about 2 years ago. And been building raised beds in my front yard! It is Beautiful and I'm so glad I started! It is My quiet place and my calm in through all the crazy! My soil is more rich then I ever though it could be! I was real nervous at first and my neighbors thought I was mad woman! But the end the result is So worth it! Watching videos like You gave me the confidence to jump in and start it! :) So I thank you!!💚🌱

I am an absolute beginner at growing anything and your videos have given me inspiration and valued information. Have planted a blackberry bush, potatoes, carrot seeds, parsnips and green beans all in pots and planters.....very excited to see how things turn out...! As i have mentioned to you before i have a paved area in the back yard, and i grow all my stuff in Raised Beds on small legs off the ground, so there's no reason not to grow on concrete, as long as it doesn't interfere with the washing line ha ha ha. Next season i'm thinking of using the square foot method on my beds. Stay Safe, Barry (Wirral, ENG)

I just like how you explain for each tip. Yes planting in containers is really a big task because the dirt can easily dry under the sun. My tomato in container is having big fruits but everytime I missed watering it in the morning, the leaves droop right away.

Yes your right. But if you only have a patio then its still worth growing. Mulch will help a lit. Check out the video in the endscreen

Uneven watering can cause 'Blossom End Rot' so you might wanna ensure that you water, maybe put in a 'Drip Irrigation' system?

Thanks Tony!!! I have all but taken up our whole growing area we have at our home in Cocoa, Florida with hot peppers and citrus and fruit. My wife wants to make a cute little herb garden on the side of the house that in summer really never receives direct sunlight so I was worried she may have no luck. Now I know it should do just fine!

Great tips. I think people worry that a few small planters isn't enough space to grow veg and while you might not be getting full heads of cabbage in a small pot, most veg you can grow in the ground you can grow in a planter. I use a mixture of in ground and container and grow all sorts. I do loads of potatoes in sacks, tomatoes, peas, kale, beetroot, carrots, spring onions, just to name a few in containers along my south facing driveway, they always do great! I've had some failures but the best way to learn is to just give it a go and see what happens :)

Yes I totally agree with you. I grow all my potatoes in those containers, I have 80 of them growing atm, but because we had this space I thought it would make a good video to show that anyone can grow even if they had a patio or even a balcony

This is my 3rd years of growing in my back yard.But the weather this year is a bit funny though, I have never experienced such a cold May month.Therefore, most of my veggies are not moved outdoor yet. Hopefully, will do that soon.

Hi Tony, I have decided to take your advice on growing potatoes in bags and plastic containers! My God, they are going crazy already my friend! I have been given some pink fur apples, which is a verity I've never tried before! Also I've just planted out my Brussels, purple kale and Savoy cabbage, all started from seed! My son has had fantastic results growing tomatoes and bell peppers from the seeds of shop purchased tomatoes and peppers! Just hope they go on to produce a decent crop?

Pink Fir Apple is delicious but very difficult to peel as it's so knobbly - so eat it with the skin on, it's more nutritious like that anyway. Growing in pots is best for this variety as it's very easily attacked by potato nematodes and eel worm, which ruined my crop in the days when I was dumb enough to grow them in the ground. Be sure to feed them when they get going.

Great video. I recently completed a project proposal for college on schools taking on gardening as a daily routine in schools. I showed how reserach showed how having a productive harden doesnt mean it has to be a huge space like you say. Recycling waste for their own compost was highlighted. Wish this video was there at the time to recommend. Great video share with super information Tony. Thanks for making.

I really appreciate this video. I just moved to Fort Myers Florida and because it’s in a golf club environment I cannot plant in ground. I can only plant and containers back by my pool on the lanai. If you have any suggestions of what fruits and vegetables would be successful in South Florida. I would appreciate getting your opinion. Thank you.

Watching this video in Belfast. Thinking of planting some veg around april/may. I have grown carrot & parsnip, potatoes and strawberries before many years back. I hit 32 on Sunday, my partner bought me a 7ft growing rack, with a coat thingy that goes over it. It was meant to be a joke present, but now iv set it up and feel genuinely motivated to get started.. As a total newbie, what'd you guys say is the easiest starter grow? I'm open to trying anything that requires a low maintenance growth.. Loved the video, keep at it! P.S I'm from England, so keeping that in mind with any suggestions.

Are you growing a beard Mr. Tony? Just kidding! I always grew my veg in pots for the longest time and now in the ground for the first time. I purchased a large self watering trough for tomatoes and they got 8 foot high! Used Miracle Gro in it. It's a great product. Take care Mr. Tony.

woodchips come from the tree surgeons around me. they chopped straw comes from a local farm shop

My whole garden is containers from spuds to sprouts. And I got all my tips from your previous videos. Just need a load of ericaceous soil for transplanting my blueberry plants. When is a good time to feed those? The fruit trees and bushes?

Liquid seaweed is great for blueberries - remember to net them or the birds will eat more than you do!

Thank you so much for sharing . I went through your link and put the miracle grow in my basket as I’m vegan and delighted it’s vegan but the link with the seeds I looked at 20 and they all say unavailable at this time . Is their a brand I can look for in the garden centre ( UK) that you recommend please .💛🤍

I tend to keep most of my own seed but simply seeds, real seeds and bakers creek are all real good

I want to grow on my porch, but people keep telling me that I don't have enough "direct sunlight" (6-8 hours). How are you dealing with the light issue on your patio? You said it's very shady, which gives me hope for my porch. What plants can I expect to grow, at least half-decent?

6 to 8 hrs is what the patio gets and is enough for most veg

I’m trying sweets (in pots) and Yukon (in ground) this year after watching your videos. However, the wife wants her grass back after my “trial” this year. May have to switch to all pots next year. No plot just small back yard.

Miracle Gro is owned by MONSANTO, therefore I will NEVER use Miracle Gro, Round up etc. I've done my research and will only use what's safe not what's mass-marketed

It's a lovely idea, but economically I don't think it'll work for me. I'm guessing the total cost of all of those Miracle-Gro products would probably equate to my monthly fruit/vegetable budget anyway...

Just really the cost of seed and compost, the containers can be anything you want to use. a lot can come from a freecycle website or even an old tin bath could be used

This is a gardening channel, but sometimes sponsored videos are required in order to pay for replacing equipment and to pay me for the invested time I put into it. Should I not be paid a thing for my time? By using sponsors it keeps the content absolutely FREE for you to have and enjoy and benefit from. Im sorry that your offended by it, but thats the reality of life

I am grateful for this channel, to complain about sponsorship is ridiculous. Watching these videos is free, but, nothing in life is free! All youtubers make videos which require time & energy. seeing a product in the video is a small price for the content.
