Part 2 of starting peonies from seed. Peony seeds keep sprouting. Today we are going to look the seeds still in the office and those already in the greenhouse.

I also read that it can take 3 to 5 and sometimes 10 years before they grow flowers

I have near heard or experienced more than 4 so far. But it's not like I'm sitting around waiting for them, I do have a life... lol. Plus we have 10 ac so I have lots of room to plant more while I wait.

I had a rough winter and my seeds did not make it. It was 100% my fault, but what is - is. So I'll try again next fall. I do not know where to find viable seeds this time of year. I am looking forward to seeing how many of my peonies come up that I planted last spring. It is still to early here to see them. We had 4" of fresh snow this morning! :)

My peonies are going to bloom this year! Not all of them - about 10. But many look great, just no blooms yet.

I've followed you're method, seeds have been in a bag with wet paper towel for about 5 months now, still no roots. Should I keep waiting or keep them in a cooler place? Room they are kept is south facing so temperatures do go up and down.

Interesting. I would guess they are not going to start. I'd put them outside in a space and let them try there. A mentor said she had seeds come up years later. So not all hope is lost. As for the cooler office. My seeds were in the office that gets cooler at night. Did you put the seeds in water to make sure they were viable before starting? I did not the first year. The second year I did and it sure helped.

You want room temperature, not cooler. You could try seed scarification. When I could not get seeds to sprout roots I rubbed them on my chainsaw file making a spot where moisture could more easily penetrate. I then placed them back in baggie and soon I saw roots.

Try putting your seeds in a bag of soil, not too wet, not too dry and let them sprout in a Ziploc bag with soil.

As soon as my pods start to crack I cut the stem and take the pod inside to dry and collect seeds once pod dries out.

They are all gone. We'll see if I start enough to sell this fall.

When i put the seeds in the paperbag with moisty paper they all get attacked with mold within days. What am I doing wrong?

I would say too wet if you're getting mold.

I’d say using a paper bag was where you went wrong, plastic is safer

Live and learn. I did that the first year too. I'd put the seeds in water and keep the ones that sink. Maybe you'll get lucky.

4pm 4-16-2024 I put my seeds in a baggie, in the fridge. Took them out today. All I see is little fine black root like things. I'm not sure they are even roots. Now what do I do?

@@karenbrown6914 After harvesting the seeds you want to put them in the baggie with some moisture in a warm room until you get roots up to an inch long, then they go in the fridge for 3 months of "winter" or until you see a leaf sprout. So I'd put them in the warmth now, in baggie, and watch for white roots to start.
