I love using grow bags for my peppers. Since we live in Colorado, it's very dry in summer, so I have to water a lot, but it's worth it! I usually fill the bottom of the pots with torn cardboard or paper, leaves, etc to add bulk and hold water so it doesn't dry up too quickly.

This is a great idea and I may try it as well. I’m in Arizona and while it’s tough to keep any pot well-watered here, it’s especially hard in grow bags. Lots of watering needed.

Last year I tried grow bags for my tomatoes and peppers, but also had some in plastic pots the same size. What I found was a huge difference in growth and health with the plants in the grow bags. especially in the tomatoes, they were 2 to 3 times as big and very healthy and green leaves. it convinced me to now only use grow bags for tomatoes and peppers.

Ive been using 5 gal pails for my tomatos and peppers for 10 years, and this year im making the jump to fabric bags. Even with seed starting and petite/baby greens I can see the dramatic difference ... they breathe vasyly better, and stay cooler due to evaporation, and as a result are far far less prone to issues like slowed growth, root rot, algae, fusarium wilt, etc . . . you can actually see the extra health by how young leaves tilt up towards the sky instead of looking like sullen captives. The bags not only perform better, theyre a lot cheaper too, if you shop around (recommended: 247Garden ... for example, I just bought 2dz each of 1/2 gal & 1/4 gal transplant bags for 30 cents each). The only thing to be aware of is that due to evaporation your plants will tend to need a lot more water, esp if you're using grow racks with ample airflow ... sometimes 2-3x more.

@@susanb3989I plan to initially try 7 gal bags for my tomatoes, and 5 gal for my peppers. For my indoor greens im using 1/2 gal for mustard & gai lan, and 1/4 gal transplant bags (which have an open seam on one side) for mid-tier transplanting (i.e., in between seed starter plugs and their final pots ... something I used to use 18oz solo cups for). TIP: Indoors doesnt matter, but for outdoor plants I highly recommend using the lightest color bags you can find (preferrably tan or light green) because darker colors are likely to get hotter in direct sun, which would likely cause root stress and exacerbate any issues with stuff like fusarium wilt (which thrives in soil temps of 70F or higher).

Good info for people on the fence re grow bags. I had very good yields of New Mexico Big Jim green chiles using five gallon grow bags last year. These were kept outside and moved around as needed as space was at a premium because I started way too many plants and couldn't bring myself to killing any of them off. Nothing fancy, just the cheap black ones from Amazon. I saved my sandy mix soil and will just re-fortify it and use again this year.

I use 5 gallon grow bags that cost $2 each and have grown jalapeno, serrano (biggest plant), scotch bonnet (most productive plant in garden with about 22 fruit, like wall to wall) and (now flowering) green bell pepper. Also an advantage of grow bags is you can cluster them together and they share moisture. If you water one, the more dry ones will absorb runoff. Use a broom to sweep runoff into other plants if on a rooftop. Finally, you can put them in puddles (say on a rooftop garden) and they absorb the water (great way to moisten coco coir).

I love my grow bags for Peppers, I saw one of your videos about them last year and bought some. One of the main reasons I bought them was for portability. We get damaging hail, so I just run around like a mad woman and bring them into the garage until the storm passes. I like the suggestion to wash them, didn't think about that, thx.

I made a self watering 7 gallon grow bag last year that held 2 gallons of water. It worked very well. I cut greenhouse plastic 3" wider than the bag. Lined the inside and used soda cans for the water reservoir. Small holes need to be drilled in the bottom of the cans then flipped over filling at least 90% of the bottom. Basically as many as you can fit. Then fill with potting mix making sure there is some to help wick. In the water reservoir I put hydroponic nutrients in and had some massive harvest.

This is my third season using bags. I don't have a large back yard and due to a tree and the house shading the back yard at different times of the season, I love being able to move them to get the most light. And in these Texas summers, being able to move my lettuce out of the direct sun helps keep it from bolting. My pepper plants are always 6' tall have done well. And BTW your first grow bag link is broken.
@allanpennington
@allanpennington 2 жыл бұрын
One important point with grow bags. As they are so porous they will easily leach out all of your nutrients from the soil quickly. So use a slow release fertiliser in your soil prep and then periodically use a liquid fert during the growing season. This can be then tailored to higher N in the early growing phase for vegetative growth and then higher P and K later for flower and fruit development. A folia spray of seaweed also really helps the plant. This is also great for winter prep. Six weeks before your first frost spray the leaves with seaweed solution once a week. It adds quite a protective layer. This last tip is mainly for citrus but could equally apply to peppers remaining outside and protected with frost cloth covers over winter.

@@JMILESN1 interesting I’m in central plateau New Zealand, high altitude and cold winters but only frost and no snow on the ground in town. This year I grew really good habanero, Serrano, cayenne, jalapeños and some Hungarian yellows. I ferment them to make hot sauce. I plant seedlings out after last frost around Oct, (second month of spring here) and was harvesting right up to end of autumn which surprised me. However with a warming planet I think seasons have slipped by a month. I haven’t tried a grow light but might as I think they would be better started a little earlier as final pickings were still green.

I achieved good results , better than the traditional garden I also grew. I suggest using a lightweight growing medium , mine was 1/3 each of sand , compost , & coco noir. Great video! I completely agree with you about the pros and cons of traditional containers and grow bags. I have grown in both types the past couple of years and in my experience the drying out of grow bags was the biggest issue. Last year I started setting my grow bags in plant saucers each time I watered. My 5 gallon bags have a diameter of 12.5" and the saucers I use are about 2" deep with a diameter of 14". When watering the bags any of the water that runs out the bottom and sides is caught in the saucer and then slowly wicked back up by the soil in the bags. I usually leave the bags in the saucers and only remove them if it looks likely to rain. I just rec'd a 6 pack of 7 gallon bags and I'm keeping an eye out for similar saucers that will be large enough for the larger bags. Thanks for sharing this info.

I live in central Florida and have used grow bags for several years. I have had reasonable success but in the summertime it seems not only the air but the soil gets over heated and the plants just don't do well. I have several pepper plants going again this summer but regulating the soil moisture is a real headache. Around here it may be that the best thing is to stop at the end of June and start again in October.

For me the bags are where it's at. I get a bigger harvest, they're a lot harder for the wind to knock them down, nothing gets root bound, just the idea of fabric over plastic sits better with me, but you still need to check in what material is used. As far as looks? I think they look better but that's totally subjective. Most peppers? Three gallon is perfect, with The exception of certain peppers such as ghost peppers where I also use a bigger bag. A no-brainer for herbs too.

Yes, they’ll compete for some nutrients, but you should get a harvest off of each

I read to put clay pebbles in the bottom of grow bag. Is that a good idea? No need to put holes in the bottom right? I live in an area that rains a lot.
@PepperGeek
@PepperGeek 2 ай бұрын
There is no need to put holes in the bottom of a regular cloth grow bag. They drain extremely well and are perfect for climates with a lot of rain! We have never put any pebbles at the bottom, I wonder if that was suggested to keep them from tipping over. Definitely not necessary!

i like em but holy smoke be sure to thoroughly prewet any soil mixes before filling them up because if it is hydrophobic at all it just goes straight for the walls and out. takes a little getting used to

Zone 9a, growbags suck. They make the soil dry out too fast and leak out water instead of soaking through INTO the soil

Any of the top rated 12 or 20 packs of bags on Amazon should work fine. I've bought over 100 Gardzen and Jeria brand 3g, 7g and 10g pots and have no complaints. You can get 7 gallon pots right now 20 for $35 or 12 for $25.

Dorian, When I've purchased grow bags from boot steap, it was ten bags for that price. Take a closer look at the description. I hope that is the case because they are not worth 30 bucks a bag. Wishing you luck! John McHatton

Ok i never actually used a commercial "grow" bag. I started making my own in 2010 or so.. First off polyester is the main ingredient in most grow bags. Its a "spun" polyester or woven fiber pressed into sheets. Its basically weed barrier made into a bag. Polyester is not something that plants or roots crave. Nothing in nature likes polyester. Especially black polyester. Using a black bag exposed to the sun makes a cooker. Roots fo not "air prune" they simply can't penetrate or try to grow through polyester. They can't even grow through lose poly fill suspended in water. I tried. Fact is plants and roots hate polyester in my opinion. A vinyly coated mesh with a leaf or moss lining makes a much more root friendly environment. For peppers you need a 7 gallon or larger bag unless its a small variety. Polyester is not a weed barrier AND a grow bag. Vinyl mesh is not a weed barrier it us a bio containment system with maximum air and water. Moss will grow on vinly mesh. Nothing grows on polyester.
