In this video I'm talking all about how to grow Ponytail palms. Ponytail palms are a low maintenance easy to grow houseplant. Despite the easy nature of these low water houseplants, they do still have their share of issues. Ponytail palms prefer to dry between waterings and most of the problems people have with them has to do with the plants being overwatered and sometimes underwatered. Brown leaf tips on ponytail palms are extremely common and not a cause for concern unless it is persistent along the entire leaf blade and happening rapidly. Usually brown leaf tips is just from the dry conditions that these plants really prefer. If the browning covers the entire leaf, give them more water and/or raise humidity while making sure they aren't being exposed to any drafts or direct air flow. Yellowing leaves usually means they are too wet, reduce watering and consider repotting the ponytail palm into a fresh soil that drains better. Ponytail palms with sunken or shriveled trunks usually need more water, if it is mushy, they've been getting too much water and might be rotting.

46 years ago I bought what I thought were onion starts. Well.... come to find out they weren't onions. They were tiny tiny ponytails palms. Fast forward 46 years and one of them is a giant. I gave it to my daughter who is also 46 and she is growing it. In 20 years maybe it will go to the granddaughter! Who knows.

I just inherited a pony tail from my grandmother who passed recently. After reading these comments, I have decided I will A) name this plant in memory of my grandmother B) Pass it onto my children one day. I love the information you shared in your video. I am a lot more confident in my ability to maintain my pony tail in memory of my beloved grandmother. May she rest in heavenly peace and know that I will keep her alive in her pony tail for as long as humanly possible.

Great Ponytail video. Everything you said is true and matters to the health of the Ponytail. My story with the Ponytail is a sweet, but sad story. My Ponytail’s name is Ed. It is named after a very dear friend who actually introduced me to the plant when we went to the nursery together in 2003. The Ponytail I bought was only maybe a foot tall, but Ed had had one that was large, at the time, and he loved it. So, I took this new plant home and put it outside by the pool. The plant grew slowly over the next couple of years. The man that introduced me to the plant got cancer the year before and died, two years after I got the Ponytail Plant. Therefore, we named it Ed. Ed is 18+ years old and is a going strong. I have replanted it two or three times, but they virtually take no work. That plant is precious to me, because of my friend Ed. I miss him and will always.

Thanks Jeff for that great video! I love my pony tail plant, had it for more than 20 years, it's very fat and about 5 feet! I'm forever fighting the urge to water it more often, it's inside in the winter (Canada) and outside for about 5 month in very hot sun in summer. I always love you speaking about your plants (and animals)!

Finally found someone who talked about a ponytail palm that has become too tall to handle! I have 2 huge ones...bought 1 in 1977, the other in 1987. 1987 is at least 9 feet tall and no longer fits in my greenhouse for the winter. It's now outgrown the garage ceiling. Leaving it outdoors in the winter is not an option here in Central Texas. Winter 2021 we had sustained single digit temps for several days. I like that you said it can be cut to keep the height manageable! I wondered about that option - now, I have permission. Thanks! Greatly enjoyed your video!

I had 3 stowaways of these in an orchidpot I bought as a rescue ... the cordex were like iddy biddy grapes, 3 years later, they are still small but now have the size of a walnut ... my little pony palm babies 🥰

Just bought and moved into a home in Florida and it has 2 of these in the front yard. They are huge maybe 10 feet tall. They have been there a while. I can tell from what I learned in your video that they have been trimmed back also. Wow 🥰

I got a 6" pot from Walmart some 5-7 years ago. Separated the multiple caudex several years ago, had over a dozen. Easy to keep, the only major pest I have encountered are my cats who will happily mow them down if given a chance.

I've 1 plant which I grew initially in a pot. Then after a few years I decided to let it hav it's head by growing it in d ground. I'm frm Malaysia, so u can imagine we have lots and lots of rain all year round. I never had to worry about watering it at all, even during d drier hot 'season'. As for d brown ends of each leaf, I thot dat is normal! D brown ends will keep lengthening until d leaf drops off d plant, dat too after quite some time has passed. So I concluded it was normal all these years for d leaves to 'behave' this way. Once in a while, esp wen I see a leaf has dropped off d tree, I wld then prune it y pulling off all d leaves dat show 'old age'. I never giv it any fertiliser, yet it grows very well on its own. Of late I noticed dat it has picked up its growth rate a little and am a little happy for dat, since my garden is too small for a big tree. I thot it is a tree originating frm Australia! 😊

Hi Jeff! This was really interesting. I have several pony tail palms and love them! I usually bottom water them because they aren't in very big pots. I think I've had my biggest, and oldest, one for maybe years, or more. It's in a really small pot for it's size, so I may repot it this Spring/Summer. If I can find one that is relatively inexpensive, I may try pruning it to get multiple trunks. I think that would be fun. Thank you so much for sharing!

I received a get well Ponytail palm 29 years ago. Within the first 5 years, the plant was healthy, but the trunk was thin and spindly. The weight of the plant became droopy and looked like Dr Seuss tree. Since then I cut, transplanted it and is now 4’ tall. Hardy plant.

Down here in s.texas ponytail palms get HUGE..... I've seen caudexes as much as 4ft wide down here...and I've actually seen them flower! And branch out to more than one crown

I’ve had my ponytail plant for ten years and bought it from IKEA. A couple of weeks ago my furnace broke. It was -40 and I had to leave asap. Two days later I came home to find that my plant survived but looks a little droopy. I’m hoping it comes back to normal. Very informative, thank you.

I also watch Nigel's channel and he keeps his in a Bonsai soil mix you can get at Home Depot in small or larger bags and I went this route cause its so fast draining after my first Pony I tried owning got over watered on my after a surgery. I found this substraight made a night and day difference for me cause it was a no fail factor for me and this plant kid is doing fantastic.

Thanks Jeff. I have a very nice pony tail that I found at Lowes on clearance for 5.00 (it's probably 7 years old now)! What I would be interested in hearing is how to separate a ponytail that has multiple plants! I found one this fall that has a bunch of tiny palms and I'm very interested in separating them in the spring. I've watched a few video's but what I've seen is quite brutal. Great info, thanks

The process of separation is very brutal! Well, it looks very brutal, but as long as the caudex and roots aren't horrible damaged, they rarely will show stress from being pulled apart. When I've split them, i soaked the entire plant in a bucket for at least 10 to 15 minutes and then used a chopstick to slowly tease out all of the roots and remove all of the soil. Once all of the soil is out and the roots are untangled, they can usually be slowly and carefully pulled apart into separate plants. It takes a long time, but it's much less brutal than just taking a knife and slicing down between the caudex.

I don’t remember where I read it , but it was about the brown tips. If you have hard water with a lot of fluoride ( like my city) , this can cause the brown tips. I water mine with purified water now and I have nice green leaves now.

Awesome vid! My ponytail palm has been doing really well, but I've noticed long leaves splitting either horizontally or vertically. I end up cutting them off, but I have no idea why some of the leaves are breaking at some point.

I got 1 this early summer for a dollar maybe 3 cause it was tipped and thatcwas rot i removed and dried out that area. Righted it and it rooted was doing good till ladt month where i noticed it died on me. Well i guess i didn't get the rot it just slowly moved up inside hidden from me. But i have learned in my list and hope to replace it with a healthy one somefay

Hi! Great video! It turns out my plant had suffered from dehydration since the trunk had shriveled in. I gave it water, but when can I expect the trunk to look fine again? It is a small plant, smaller than the one in the video.

I just purchased a Ponytail palm in a 10 inch growers pot. It needs repotted so I bought a 12 inch clay pot and some Black Gold Cactus Soil. Haven't got the chance to repot yet. I left the plant on the back patio for some sun and would bring it in at night. I fell asleep and the plant got caught in a heavy rain. I left it outside on sunny days to dry out: apparently too much. The middle of the crown of leaves is brown now and although the rest of the plant is green, it is mainly made of of those off shoots all around the top. If I take those off and trim the brown and repot the plant all I will have left is the base. Is this advisable? Really appreciate the video & the info!

I received a pot of all sorts of little plants from my friend. Including a ponytail palm. I actually didn't even know what it was until my sister told me. The little "ball" is "if I can call it that was about the size of a golf ball. It came in a small flattish pot. She suggested I transplant it in a bigger pot, which I did. It's now grown more in the last two years than the previous 5 years I've had it. It was about 15cm tall when I got it 7 years ago and it is about 50 cm tall now. The "ball" is now bigger than a tennis ball. The pot I've planted it now is about 40cm in diameter and 50cm high. Would it ever be needed to be repotted at another stage? Then it started getting like a white aphid/fungus. The nursery gave me some pesticide, but it kept on coming back. So I took a gamble and pulled off the infected leaves at the bottom. Well that payed off it didn't come back. Do the bottom leaves fall off or do you need to pick them off? I'm not sure what I must do. I would really appreciate your advice as our nursery don't know much about ponytail palms. Thank you.

Thank you for the excellent informative video! We received a ponytail palm gift last year from a nursery. The soil was covered with tiny rocks packed so tightly they couldn't be moved. We removed those rocks, and then reported into Miracle-Gro indoor potting soil, but we keep getting long brown fronds (not just at the tips). The plant is in an eastern-facing window that gets a lot of bright southern AM sun. The soil seems to dry out completely every few days. The trunk is thin (it came that way) and firm. We've been watering every 10 days or so. Do the brown fronds indicate too little watering? If not, what do they indicate? (We’ve inspected and there are no pests.). Any advice would sure be appreciated. Thanks!

Use a fast draining soil. I recently repotted my 25+ year old plant from ordinary potting soil to a fast draining soil for cacti and succulents. I do get brown fronds occasionally. I just pull them off.

I've only read about success propagating from pups (new little plants that pop out on the trunk). Did you try planting the chopped bit, and did it work?

@@SouthCountyGal The chopped part didn't take, unfortunately. The very top FINALLY pushed new growth about 4 months ago. I'm not kidding. LOL! It took almost 2 years!!! There are now 3 little heads growing quite well. Love it!

I have a Kokedama and I only water it once every 2 weeks. I had one in the Keys (very hot and humid) in ground, in direct sun and never watered it and it was massive and over 50 yr old. You may be over watering and that’s why you are getting bugs.

Hello. My mom gifted me a ponytail palm about 6 months ago. It’s still in the original pot, but the pot has no drainage hole. That concerns me. Also, the soil doesn’t appear to be fast draining soil. That also concerns me. To top off my concerns, I think I overwatered it about a week ago because the soil has been really damp/moist for longer than usual and the tips of the plant are now brown/yellow ombré. 😩😩 I don’t know what to do, so I sat her outside in the sun light. Should I try to repot her? Please help.

With other more tropical houseplants get brown tips(not yellow) it can be a sign the plant needs more water. Is it possible w the ponytail? My rather large(3ft) is doing well but does have this problem it's inside but in a bright spot and watered about once a month or is it just too dry with our warm house?

Can someone help me with potting mix ratio please? I have coco coir, pumice, and worm castings. Will I be able to use this if I use higher ratio of pumice? I can’t really buy other ingredients right now.

Please HELP! I love my ponytail palm and I’ve had it for several years now but I recently repotted it and realized the roots were dry, brown, and crispy. They were so brittle that many of them crumbled off. I think I may have overwatered and then under-watered and then I repotted in too large of a container.. :( I have scoured the internet for advice on what to do and I have removed the rotten roots but, there aren’t any healthy roots left. The top of the ponytail seems lively and okay (for now) but I am concerned that it won’t survive and regrow roots. Do you have any experience dealing with root rot?

Is the fertilizer harmful to a iguana? I'm asking if it's not harmful to other animals.. I have a small ponytail palm in my iguanas 125 lb tank.. I keep it by her waterfall and fogger..

I managed to kill one after 42 years. Princess Gertie was a housewarming gift to my parents from their real estate agent after they bought a house in 1978, and when they split up in the early '90s I got custody. She and her pot finally got too heavy for two people to move a few years ago, and she rotted from the inside after too many torrential downpours. She was crowded in the pot and it couldn't drain well. She also had not had a good winter; she was too heavy and tall to put in her usual winter spot, and she was in a dark area of my kitchen for three months. Princess Gertie did best when I was a neglectful plant steward and forgot to water her for weeks at a time. Every spring she got a "haircut;" I trimmed her brown ends before putting her outside in May. Twice she survived winters where one of my cats decided she was a litter box -- I had to uproot her and completely replace her soil. I *do* spray my ponytail palms, because we have forced hot air heat in an old house, and their fronds get coated with dust. In a heavy pollen season I'll even spray them when they're outdoors, on an overcast day so they don't burn. However, I also laboriously dry every frond while wiping off the dust, so maybe it doesn't count as misting. My daughter took my 28 year-old ponytail palm, Young Einstein, to college with her. I bought him for $10 when my husband and I got married. He's planted in cactus soil and is doing great! After a suitable grieving period for Gertie, I succumbed to the cuteness factor and bought a ponytail pup at Home Depot for $3. That was five months ago, and the base has nearly tripled in size. It has also grown a lot of cute little fronds. It's in a mix of coconut fiber, cactus soil, and orchid bark, and lives under a grow light next to my orchids. I haven't decided on a name for this one -- until now I didn't understand how I killed Gertie and was afraid to get attached. Thanks for your video. This one's going to be treated right!

I recently got my ponytail palm, after a month the tiny branches started to fall off. The tips turned brown as well as the bottom leaves. Anyone have suggestions?

This must have been filmed quite a while ago since this was filmed outside and the Thai Constellation still looks wonky. A friend of my mom had one that had been her mother's, it was supposedly 50 years old (or something, that was a long time ago) but still pretty small because grown in low light in Ohio and it must have been cut at some point because it had two "trunks". The caudex was pretty large, maybe 8-10" diameter if I remember correctly.

Yup, I filmed a few vids late summer to release in winter when I'm tired of being inside and don't have the nice views in the background. Do they grow outside in your area? I've seen them in south Florida and they are so big and thick! 50 years! Wow! My dad has had one in his office since 1989, I think it's the first houseplant to catch my attention. He used to water it with mountain dew and diet coke🙄🤷♂️ ... the melted left overs in his cup. Still alive and growing strong!

@@TropicalPlantParty Yup, they can be stuck in the ground here and they'll occasionally bloom. There is a pretty big one at the Naples Botanical Garden (I think). Now, scary to think about, 1989 was over thirty years ago. That makes it a pretty old plant in its own right.

I inherited my Mother’s ponytail palm. She and I were extremely close and she died of Covid at 93 Feb 2021. My Mother loved plants! Her whole life she had the best green thumb and she made everything perfectly grow. Me I am not good at it!!!! I have her ponytail palm and I love it especially cause she loves it! I have no clue what I am doing with it! My apt is kind of dark! My landlord won’t let me put it in the hall window where I did have it and it loved that window! I have a little back deck. Today I am letting it get some real sun. I am trimming it today. But I have a major question about the leaves! Some of the leaves have split. Do I cut that part off? Above the split?! I am so scared this plant will die and I will be devastated because Mom loved this plant. I named it after her. Betty Gene is it’s name. I am not sure if my plant is draining enough has some brown leaves which I am cutting today. It’s looks pretty decent but I think it’s holding water but scared to replant it? Idk what to do!???

Ummmm i searched on the google it said im not allow to give water untill its dry but i gave little bit of water when i was moving the plant to flower pot is that ok?

absolutely! Especially since you were repotting the plant. yes, they prefer to dry out between waterings, but dry roots crack and break easily, so it was a good idea to make sure they weren't brittle when repotting the plant.

I had one for 10 years,with 3 heads. Well hurricane Ida happened, my house got destroyed. I brought my plants to my dad's to take care of them. Well he killed my ponytail. All other plants he had did well. Now I'm starting with 2 small ponytails.

Hello! I keep mine outside part of the year and they get plenty of rain on them, never been a problem before, but they are in really well draining potting soil.

Depends on where you live. Some places get a lot more rain than others.
