Danny shows how he is growing sweet potato slips like his daddy did many years ago. We have always started our sweet potatoes in dirt, but This year we are adding another layer to our dirt to create a better growing environment. We also moved our old fashioned multiplying onions to a better growing location.

You should try making a ruth garden. Plot a space with garden stakes. Cut the grass away then Put about 3 or four layers of hay in the space let them set through the winter. Then pull the hay back through them in a row. Put little hay on them and watch them grow. No watering, no tilling, no bunch of hard working the land. I never knew any other way of getting slip but from the soil. Like starts and such.

I love the videos in which you talk about the crops the old timers grew. So many seeds/plants today are focused on mass productivity instead sustainability and they lack flavor as a result. I know that’s not true across the board, but for the most part it is the sad truth. May God bless you both for sharing the wisdom you’ve gained along the path of life.

That is the exact reason I started finding and using heirloom seeds. I was disappointed that tomatoes did not taste like the tomatoes my grandparents/ aunts and uncles and even my mother grew. My tomatoes were beautiful but the taste was just meh. I asked my aunt that still grows huge gardens what the secret was. She said she had been growing old varieties like brandywine and beefsteak. I joined a garden forum and started buying a few heirloom seeds and well I got carried away but now I have tomatoes that are ugly. Cracked, funny shoulders, lumpy but the flavors ? Incredible. Even better than I remember. Especially the blacks/browns/purples. I'll pick ugly tasty fruit over perfect fruit every time. Happy gardening

Good morning from Florida. I had an old sweet potato in my kitchen that had started to grow baby slips. I put about 2-3 inches of top soil in a 2in tall cardboard rectangular box and set the sweet potato on top of it. I just set my dripping hose end at the corner to keep it watered. To my surprise, there are now about 10 beautiful long slips growing from it! Gotta figure out what to do with it next. I'm just getting into gardening and don't have land, just a small yard. Thx for this video. You two are awesome!

You can grow potatoes in a 5 gallon bucket. Put holes in the bottom for drainage. You can put 3 sweet potato slips in each bucket. You can also use a grow bag. Ditto for white/Irish or any variety of potato.

Sweet Potatoes are really good....the white one we call it Batata in Puerto Rico. If you burn some wood and you place them in the middle/corner of the charcoal cover, once they are cooked that you pinch them with a knife or fork and goes through...mmmm mmmm ready to eat with a cup of a nice black ☕ or a glass of cold milk 🥛😉

The public school system just doesn’t do field trips like they use to or I would support this wholeheartedly. I think a better way to reach children is by having a child friendly garden near a road with signs clearly stating what has been planted and pictures of what it will produce. Community gardens should be front and center in order for the passers by (young and old) to see what all is possible.

@@pinetreehill586 I used to work with a non profit gardening group and would go around to SD schools and help to jump start the community/school yard gardens. 70% of the time they were vandalized. And then the teachers and volunteers would not be around to organize in the summers which is the growing season. Most of the time we worked on grants that would cover our salary.

@@pinetreehill586 It is a romantic idea. I have always dreamed of having an educational garden on our 4 acres. I thought that this would be great -the bringing this idea to communities. I worked for this non-profit for less than a year. If you have ever worked for a nonprofit, that is how they run. I worked in a building with 5 other nonprofits. Thats what they do. Take Federal grant money and then they have to spend the $ on certain areas. Ex. a certain amount must go to office supplies.... and the M of D employees got a cali vaca in mid winter for seminars -Thats why they received a new 4k copier every 2 to 3 years. If you don't spend it, you loss it. Anything Gov. does is wasteful most of the time. Sad but true.

Danny I am going to try doing this in a tote. My husband is not able to get out and do this do to his health. My dad used to live across the creek behind me and he was my gardener. We get ours started indoors in tubs, half buried in potting mix at at least 65 F .. but then take cuttings from the rooted slips, root those, and make more slips. We are at 36 degrees North Latitude, and Beauregard grows like a champ for us 👍

My dad always just started them in a glass of water on the windowsill, and pulled them off when they were about 4 inch high, Carefully pulling them off to try and get a good base from the momma tater. One good mother potato grows a lot, and continues producing. Sweet potatoe greens are great salads and even dehydrated for smoothies. Amazingly versatile plant.

Danny , I already have the draws... what do I do next? I wished you covered that in this video. Do I dig up the potatoes? And are those onions also called walking onions also? I can't find them anywhere. I grew up in Iowa and I live in Oklahoma now. I miss those old fashioned onions that spread.

I've never really had luck with water but have get luck with putting them in soil. I'm in Ohio and I put mine in a turkey roaster throw away pan. I get 200 slips for one potato.

Love it. Wish I was having better luck. I only have a few slips from regular orange grocery store potatoes. My white sweet potatoes were put in the dirt the week before the freeze. I brought them into the garage and put under grow lights but after we lost power they rotted. So far I have not been able to get replacements.

Thank you SO MUCH ! This is the most sensible way to get the job done right and naturally ! We're up north from you folks, but I did grow them once with a very small harvest ~ but I can see now what I did then that wasn't' beneficial. I sure would like a decent harvest. We do grow white potatoes ( much more than needed.) and lots of other good vegetables on our little mountain farm. Now that I found you ~ I'll be back!

JudithB I grew Buregard last year, and it was a small crop. I think I will do it your way and see how it does! Still building raised beds and trying to get them all filled. I hope the garden is all finished this year and does even better then last year!!.

This is basically how we start Hayman sweet potatoes here on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. I also add some sand to the soil over the seed potatoes. The biggest challenge is not leaving the tops of the cold frames down on sunny days and overheating the growing slips. I plant about 250 slips a year and harvest 5-7 bushels of Hayman annually. I'll put the potatoes in the cold frame at the start of April and plant the sprouts in early to mid May.

Just found you and subbed. My wife and I are getting back to our roots ... learning to ferment and keep food without refrigeration and freezers. I live in NE Kansas and have been getting better at growing sweet potatoes (250+ pounds last year) ... just have to be careful not to put them out too early. I started slips this year for the first time and off course they are in water. Your method is so superior ... the way the Good Lord intended it!! I can't wait to view more of your videos.

I started my single sweet potato in water , since December on a heat mat , there are only 2 tiny growths... 2cm since December... what a waste of time ! I’ll try your way next year. Thanks . From 🇬🇧

My daddy would put compost down, potatoes, then sawdust and keep it watered. He grew tons of slips and sold to public. We were born and raised in Alabama, German heritage. Love your video! Reminds me very much of those days. One of the potatoes were called Porto Ricans?

I’m saving and sharing this video with my gardening friends. I’m from Tennessee, but now live in Georgia. I have to try this method soon. I’m in zone 8b and have a long growing season.
