Tomatillo plants are similar to tomato plants but grow quite a bit larger, up to 6 feet wide. The tomatillos themselves have a husk around them which you remove to get to the green fruit beneath.

I had one purple tomatillo that was given to me last year. It may not have been as full as it could have been but it did self-pollinate. This year im growing 4. Thanks for the info on how much room they need. I probably would have planted too close otherwise.

Excellent video. I've never grown them, but am this year; plants are huge and I thought there was something wrong, as there's these empty lantern looking things growing with nothing inside them.

You don't need two plant. Tomatillos are self pollinators. With almost all normal garden plants i would hand pollinate to guarantee a large yield.

My one plant at 1st looked awful with 2 leaves now it's grown to be 6 ft wide. I didn't know I needed 2, so now I have to hand pollinate.

Great info thanks for posting. Can you freeze them whole?
@theweekendbeckons94394 жыл бұрын
Phil Jones you can freeze them whole. I never peel them beforehand but perhaps some people do

Dale Doback when you say they will keep UNPEELED , are you referring to the paper or the skin of the fruit?

I've been hand pollinating mine (first time growing them). Should I run my brush against every single flower? I'm getting a lot of flowers and losing track of which ones I brushed with pollen
@theweekendbeckons94392 жыл бұрын
I've never hand pollinated a plant before so I'm not sure. My tomatillos have always pollinated well, just by bees.

I grew some tomatillo plants last year and my cucumbers murdered them because they were young and weren't strong enough. The tomatillos seem to be real prolific and I did get a handful of fruit but it didn't go well. I'm going to try again and if I can get my plants half as healthy and strong as yours are I'll be very happy. And people be careful what you plant your cucumbers next to because those things are like alien creatures trying to grab on to whatever they can....

Phil collins ours came from a nursery and were already over a foot tall so they were strong enough to handle the cucumbers.

I have 6 plants and they are growing great and making lots of flowers, but I can't seem to get any fruit. I'm in Beijing, China and there aren't many pollinators here, so maybe that's it, but I am hand pollinating them and I still can't seem to get fruit. Am I doing something wrong? Also, what variety are you using?
@theweekendbeckons94395 жыл бұрын
Chris Leonhard I’m not sure of the variety. I picked it up at a local nursery. I haven’t had a ton of success when I grow them from seed.

I have 1 plant and it produces perfect flowers. I hand pollinate it to itself and it sets fruit the next day on any flower I do this with. Either I got really lucky with a random selfer or selfing variety or you don't need two. It does not set fruit well without my help and it is so big I don't do every flower so I am sure it is not a neighbor plant pollinating it.

Where do you get those plants can you buy them in Canada?
@theweekendbeckons94395 жыл бұрын
Margaretha Zacharias I bought mine at a greenhouse here in Canada. Not all will have them so you’ll just have to try a few in your area
@emmapursley17385 жыл бұрын
If there’s lots of bees around do you still need 2 plants for pollination or do the bees pollinate them?
@theweekendbeckons94395 жыл бұрын
Emma Pursley yes, you need both bees and two different plants
@its.basically_steve5 жыл бұрын
Flies also help the process of pollinating plants
