Did you know we harvest our tulips with the bulbs on? Steve and I wanted to show you how we're growing our tulips in crates this year on our cut flower farm while we discuss things that have caused us issues in the past. As we build every year upon our experiences, you can learn from our successes and mistakes and see all the efforts that go into those beautiful tulips from your local farmers! Tulips are a crowd favourite every spring and our customers love them. Are you growing tulips this year?

Love the goats in the background! They’re like naughty children! Anyway I just wanted to say that what you’re offering is so different by your ability to design that you’re not competing with the supermarkets. If you’re selling bunches like them, then yes you’re doing the same thing even though your tulips are bigger and better, that’s difficult sometimes for the customer to realize. If you’re value adding to your tulips and never selling them by the bunch, then you can charge what they’re worth because they’re different to anyone else’s, and you’ve added value to your end product for your customer and your profit.

Oh I completely agree with your thinking with the value added component, that is very important and can even be done with less fancy types of tulips. We do sell a lot of straight tulip bunches so we are mindful of offering something different in that regard also, from different specialty varieties to colour blends to presentation. Overall there has been a good demand for our tulips and I’m sure that is also due to our marketing and finding our customers who want what we produce 🙂

It’s so challenging. I find I have to let the first one from each new variety ripen first so I can see what the proper stage is to harvest, they are all different!

@@floristsonfarms The goats were funny. I'm working on becoming a flower farmer, last year i tried a lot of flowers to see what grows here and to learn as much as possible about every flower and filler. Coming year i'm doing 2x the space and going to try to sell some. So for me it's interesting to see how bigger farmers do stuff. I'm from Holland,(tulips are extremely cheap here), and i know how they plant the fields mechanically, so it was nice to see how you do it in crates to make it possible on a smaller scale.

Ooh I love Holland! I actually trained for floral design for a few months in the Netherlands years ago, with various relatives who are all in cut flowers in different aspects. My grandparents were born in Rijnsburg and Den Haag! The crates is a nice way to do tulips. Some do raised beds for planting tulips. There are more than one good way, just depends on what fits you best :)

@@floristsonfarms Oh wow! Did your grandparent move to the USA? I was born in Den Haag and both my parents are from there (Rijswijk and Loosduinen)!! We moved to the north of Holland, to the countryside. Love it! Now i remember you mentioning working in Holland in one of your video's. How cool!

Yes all four of my grandparents immigrated to Canada actually, after the war! I was able to tour northern holland with one of my cousins who is in the tulip business, saw all the big tulip farms up there. Such a beautiful area! My husband’s father was also born in den Haag but my husband has never visited. - I hope to take him and my kids some day!

in such a box, 70-80 tulips grow well, depending on the size of the bulb. the main thing is to observe the temperature of cooling, rooting and growing. humidity is not more than 65%.

Hi there! I am glad to have found your channel. I follow you on many of the socials and really enjoy your style and have learned from you. :) Do you have a source for bulb crates? I did tulips last year but not anywhere near on the scale of getting crates when ordering. Also, are you able to hold your early and mid season bloomers till the late season come on? How many weeks are you comfortable storing them in a cooler with the bulb on? ~~~lots of questions from the Southern most tip of mainland Canada :)

So glad you found your way here! I’m just getting started on KZfaq and I’m so excited to be able to share and teach this way - it’s been a really good fit! For bulb crates, if you have an account with Van Noort, they do sell them to their customers. Other wholesalers will have them as well. We’ve actually gotten quite a few just through marketplace from other farmers. Garden centres sometimes have them too if you call around and ask. You’ll probably find the earlies, mids, and lates will overlap. The entire blooming period for tulips is only about 6 weeks max unless you are forcing earlier ones. It’s a little trial and error because, I don’t know if you’ve noticed this yourself; but sometimes they’ll go against the category they were sold as. Storage with the bulb on is really dependent on your use for them, at what stage of ripeness you are pulling them out of the ground, and your storage temperatures. You can dry store for up to 4-6 weeks. For retail, they need to go out sooner than for events. The longer you delay the bloom by storing, the quicker it will blow open when you take it out of storage. If you pull earlier you’ll have a longer time frame. I actually prefer to store only a couple of weeks in my cooler. Maybe I should do a video of this in the spring! Southernmost tip of Canada….you must be in Ontario? I’m about as far south west as you can get on the mainland before you land in the ocean 😉
