I'm British Indian and relate to this video SO SO much!! Growing up I was always ashamed that I couldn't speak punjabi and thought there was something wrong with me, it was only when I went to university and realised so many other Indians were the same! As I'm getting older, like you, I've been trying to be more intentional about connecting with my roots but I do find it tough/often get embarrassed

Still your life in uk is much more nice in academic point of view, you have best university and we have to complete with millions of other candidates of the university which are not even in top 100 of Q's world ranking. But we are rich in culture and values

Great story btw!! I'm a Malaysian Telugu but I'm unable to speak Telugu tho. I can speak English, Malay & Tamil (It is the language commonly spoken by the majority of the Indian Diaspora). I'm now in the phase of learning Telugu slowly by watching movies and reading self-thought books.

I am an Indian(Telugu) American and can relate to your journey on many levels. I did not have a lot of Indian scene while in high school which made me dislike my own culture. Your parents and your classmates seem really nice! And I totally empathized with everything you said! My parents told me I was too American and even though I was in middle school and high school they constantly talked about if I learned how to cook and when I marry an Indian man, and I could never marry anyone outside of Gujarati. I grew up in a really small southern town, and we were vegetarian and Hindu. So people would always judge or shame me for being vegetarian and hide meat in my food during lunch. I couldn’t have boundaries because I was codependent with my parents. Now at 29 I’m starting to feel independent. My parents still don’t like that I’m dating a white guy. It’s like if I marry white then I’m not Indian enough for them and they say that I hate them.

I totally understand your parents. They do not want you to lose touch with your culture. If u marry a white man most probably your child would be completely western oriented and lost touch with their indian roots. Like u stated people would hide meat based products in ya lunch even after knowing that u were vegetarian that shows how little they respect ya culture so it is upto us indians to maintain our cultural values. Sorry if i sound rude though. Because i see a lot of indian as well as asian American women marrying white Christian men but you'd rarely see the reverse... just my thoughts

I want to say, you can be anyone u want doesn’t need anything to define u. U are unique which carry both Indian and American culture. Which is what’s beautify are.

Hey I’m of Telugu origin too lol, I can speak fluently but can’t read or write it and my father came to the US from Vizag back in 1995/96ish and my mother came here from Hyderabad in 2001/2002ish and in PA you’ll find a lot of Indians right outside Philly where I’ve lived most of my life and you’ll find a lot of em near and in NJ too where it’s just a mix of Indians and Chinese lol, My Hindi definitely sucks no matter how many times I attempted to learn it on my own but anyway I will graduate High School come June and will attend Penn State in the fall and I’ll try to take some Hindi classes there and hopefully learn better with a teacher in the picture!!

Hi Harshibar - Do you have any advice for learning about Telugu culture? My boyfriend is Telugu and has a hard time teaching me about his culture not knowing what is unique to his family versus the culture (I think this is a guy issue, everyone i've dated has a hard time explaining/teaching). I'm very familiar with North Indian culture learning from close friends and Bollywood movies/music but South Indian culture is new to me. I would be happy for any and all advice! He and I are thinking more about our future together and I would like to learn how to uphold his culture and my own well.

Hi! I’d recommend watching different Telugu movies (and in different genres) to get a sense of Telugu culture - though of course it’s skewed a little bit :)

My suggestion for learning Telugu is to watch Telugu movies or Telugu comedy shows like Jabardath, wirelly, and some youtube channels too like girls-formula,Tamada-media----etc.

Growing up in Florida I was always the only Indian kid. When I finally got a couple Indian friends I realized it's ok to hang out with people that look like you, but it's nothing amazing. It's about having strong commonalities

One thing that I would like to mention here is that I think South Asians who grew up in South Asia should fully accept and embrace South Asians who were born and raised overseas. Even though South Asians who were raised in another country can not speak their parent's mother tongue (because of multiple reasons..one of them is the immense pressure to assimilate)...still South Asians who grew up in South Asia should discover bonding, brotherhood and sisterhood with their foreign born South Asian brothers and sisters ... The biggest problem with Indian regional languages is that they don't have a proper grading and comprehensible input system. I am learning chinese and KZfaq is full of videos at various levels HSK1 HSK2 and so on. Don't see anything like that for Indian regional languages

There isn't a better time to be "Indian" in the US. Indians today are respected in all fields (not just IT) for our competence, work ethic, honesty and entrepreneurship. We are also known to be good citizens who are law abiding and good neighbors. To add to this, brand India is on a rapid upward trajectory. But all this together in the land of opportunities and fantastic fellow citizens from other ethnicities, we should consider ourselves to be amongst the most fortunate. Let's use this to contribute to both American and US societies.

I came to US recently and have been observing Indian born Americans. Thing about US is unlike how we grew up in India, Americans only know a world within United States. They don’t have a world view. While Indian immigrants are desperate for their kids or hold on to culture, I think they should not. One can understand Indian culture only when one is in India. It won’t happen by making occasional effort during festivals, visiting temples and watching Bollywood films. The fact is if your born here you will become 💯 American without carrying any roots and the desperation to become Indian is evident. It’s always a choice. Once you accept it own it and live with it

What I have found is you have to be u. That is why, I 've stopped certain things about indian culture that I don't like. I also I felt was forced into learning things about indian culture. I grew up in the US and this is as Indian as I will be. Now that both of my parents are no more, me and my husband cook a variety of vegetarian food other than indian food: Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, etc.. As long as it is vegetarian... I am a singer: I sing carnatic, Hindustani, western... I wear both indian and western clothing... We go to the temple on festival days like ganesh chathurthi, Krishna janmashtami, ramavami, navarathri, deepavaLi, etc.. But, I won't attend certain functions of certain relatives of mine and I won't be loud and just be talking over each other which I can't STAND that indians do. Here in the US, we are taught to wait until our turn comes, say "excuse me" "please" "thank you", learn how to share with others, right from pre school and you are supposed to carry that right into adulthood. Indians who grew up in India have absolutely no clue on these things.

Idk if you understand how many people vibe with what your saying. I'm an Indian American born in America. I'm also telugu. We moved to India for 6 years, so my telugu is native speaker level. It creates a bit of a cognitive dissonance within oneself. Its like you don't fit in totally with Americans, or Indians. Also if you wanna improve telugu, I'd also watch a lot of old movies and TALK A LOT. I picked up telugu in like a month or two when I was India, by virtue of my being forced to learn.
