I tell them the same thing each time...Major in art BUT double major in business. If you can learn how to sell your art, the world is your oyster. Jackie, I just want to let you know you are one of my -- if not my absolute -- favorite creator. Both on this platform and as a creator of beautiful art. I've been a long-time viewer of your content and your work, your writing, and your poetic way with words is astounding. I'm not one to pity people so don't take this that way, but I'm really sorry about all the things you have to go through as both an asian and an artist with profound paintings. It's honestly hard to believe how hateful a single person can be. However, you inspire me so much to just turn away; not ignoring it, just acknowledging it and moving on. I've delt with a lot of what you have over the years, although I am white, so it's a little easier on me. I'm nonbinary and I also worked a lot with art in the past, though I don't plan on pursuing a major or anything like that in art. I'm actually aiming for top 3 in my class so that I can get scholarships to MIT to study neurobiology and computer science. But enough about me, this is about you after all. Jackie Liu, you are the most talented, inspiring, thoughtful and poetic artist I have ever met (as much as I can "meet" you because you don't know me lol). Hi Jackie :) I am currently in my freshman year of college currently undecided but taking courses in art. I completely relate to the "gaslighting yourself" because I thought art wasn't truly a career and my family thought it was not a real career so It left me stuck. still figuring out what I want to do. I do enjoy animating and art but still undecided.

It's very easy to go without knowing something when eternal aspects of life reward them. Kind of like how we reward people with ED in a society that glorifies smaller bodies. Good on you for coming to this realization and wanting to work on it even if aspects of it are appealing to society at large. We are all a work in progress.

Love your painting and I really love how you tackle different heavy topics on your art. Sometimes, it is okay to grow, losing something and gaining something in the process. Understanding the self brings more essence to everything: life, death, and art. ❣

i actually loved the old videos so much and just watching part of this video has already made my day so much better. i am also a perfectionist and i was like a work horse in high school but then i could no longer repress my trauma and made the wrong choice for college so my compartmentalized reality crashed and i've been really sad about my lack of productivity ever since. i used to eat, sleep and breathe being the best at everything and for some things i was very good but i was not happy because like you said you were sacrificing your mental health to achieve it! thank you for sharing your experience!!!

thank you so much, really. throughout this video i had many introspective moments, when your own introspection reveals those of mine in the subconscious, when i thought i was doing quite nicely. you brought awareness to me as a complex person, and many of your thoughts hits home - growth is not a linear process, your point in the ending on naivety, and many more. i study in a high-achieving high-school, and although for the majority i didn't really grind hard and pursue grades, i still relate with quite a lot of what you're saying at a fundamental level. especially since the last two years really had an emphasis on work hard and doing well, i placed and am placing burdens on myself - the pressure and requirement of doing well - when really, your video allow me to see education as enjoyment. i mean, this is one of the things you brought of my subconscious - i thought i was learning for enjoyment, but this process i now feel is littered with stress and expectations. i've recommended this video to my high-school classmates - im sure every single one of them will find, in some way or another, a deeply relatable experience. again, thank you so much for taking the time and energy to create this vid.

It's hard to know how to start, and my words aren't adequate. This video is utterly engaging on multiple levels. Your artwork is wonderful--very beautifully crafted, visually engaging and fascinatingly representational. Layered on the art is your video production, which is phenomenal. The flow and timing are incredible. Applying gloss to your painting might be a relatively mundane process, but you make it fascinating, holding the viewer's attention through every pour and varied brushstroke. And through it all, your narration--your public journaling--is deeply appreciated. In summary, you are an incredibly gifted storyteller.

Many thanks for sharing! Growing up occupies one for about 25 years. Then you live for a few years (let's say 10) carefree. If you get kids somewhen the growing up reflections re-enter your mind unexpectedly. One is able to understand their own past better I find because you as a new parent get the first hand experience of what your parents had to get through to raise you as a kid and manage their own life at the same time. 😁 Kids have a high priority but not all the the the highest and this is a not too easy to come to terms with. Re: loosing a lot of data: One of the best opportunities to free oneselfs from the sticky past. Re: OCD: A good reminder to be kinder to OCD people around me. Looking after someone in your family, a friend or a stranger helps to take the focus off yourself and to have a better perspective on life - OCD is a strange self obsession I find. Enough rambling; I should work on my next painting 🙃

I have traumatized myself by guilting myself about “using my education to the max bc ur father could barely go to school as a poor immigrant” and just generally beating myself up on being successful bc my parents have worked so hard and are pouring any spare penny into my college fund and it just never feels like I’m working hard enough.

I wish I had so much insights at this age, although I had more the opposite problem - being overconfident in my abilities, and not working hard enough to sharpen my skills.

Aghhshjfkwnfk I relate to sm of this. Imma be a frosh at Stanford (in like 3 days) and I basically gaslit myself into thinking I would major in public policy and CRES because “that’s the only way I can make real change and art doesn’t actually make change” or somethin stinky stupid like that. Anyways this summer I realized that I’m the happiest when I’m making art and I CAN MAKE CHANGE THROUGH ART so yeah I finally gave myself permission to major in art practice 😜 literaly 10000 times more excited for college now. Living is hard. We lust for reasons to live because we're scared. Scared of missing out or inconveniencing others. We seek a value from others, but running after this validation can ruin our life quality. Not too much not too little. It's hard to balance on a surfing board. More reasons for worry building up in you arms as you age, making it easier to tilt over. Missing the time when we had less to worry about, but at least we can try to utilise the things we've been given. More interesting than nothing
