Can you grow a bonsai from a cutting in a pot?
Often people will say you can only start a bonsai from a big tree. But is this true? Some of the finest bonsai are grown in a pot, from the early days on. So this is what I am doing. And I give you 4 reasons why growing a bonsai from small cutting onwards in a pot instead of growing them out fast in a box or full ground.

It's very nice when you get a tree that already existed and style it your own way, but for me it's actually more fun when you create a beautiful bonsai out of a tree that would not exist if you didn't take a cutting some random day and decided to root it. The time it takes to develop is part of the process, bonsai requires a lot of patience.

I have to agree - I have numerous Chinese Elms, Trident Maples and Fuji Cherry all developed from cuttings. I especially like the point you make about more proportional aging effects on the smaller scales. It is very realisitc to produce good quality bonsai from your cuttings. Great stuff Jelle

Keep in mind: Buds and first leaves are not equivalent to roots yet. Now it is key to remain patient and let the tree rally grow. No peaking!

Yes! I'd like to know how to deal with trees in each level of development. Especially conifers (pines (silvestris), junipers), as deciduous seem to be easier to handle. Eg. how to develop a thick pine trunk and have thin, proportional branches.

I have for many years grown pre bonsai trees in pots. Never in bonsai pots, but rather plastic or wood. I also have grown many in the ground. I agree that in the ground they grow faster, but important to lift and do root work every two years to improve Nebari. I have found that for smaller bonsai, growing in plastic pots works well as you more actively work on trees in a pot. I personally think that growing pre bonsai in a bonsai pot is a waste as my pre bonsai and my bonsai are kept in different places - in my growing nursery in plastic pots.

All down to personal preferences I would say. I like to grow a few of them in bonsai pots for the great control and the visual presence.

Hi Jelle. One of my former bonsai teachers, some 20 years ago, told me that the best way is to start from seed because if you start from cuttings you will have a lot of styling to do, leaving healing wounds that would make a tree ugly and subtract from its value. I don't think that anything he said stood the test of time but are there any advantages on growing from seed? Beside early root formation and possibly a bit longer lifespan. I apologise for the long question. Take care and good luck!
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
I think the biggest benefit is genetic variation. I grow things from seed because of the chance that something really odd comes out. I am not convinced cutting or seedling would affect lifespan a lot for most species (And I am not sure why a cutting would have bigger wounds than a seedling tbh!)
