I like that you emphasized just having fun and doing what you want. It seems like so many people expect everyone in bonsai to be trying to show off their trees and win awards or something. My trees are just for me. I’ll never do a show, which really frees me from having to worry about what makes a tree “worthy” or whatever.

Thanks for all your great videos Jelle! After the initial total beginner phase I find three types of videos very useful: 1. Problem videos 2. Species specific videos 3. Season specific videos I learn a lot from hearing you tackle a specific problem. It can be a pest, a design challenge, or perhaps a tough call balancing health of a tree with getting results fast. It’s also very interesting to dive deeper into specific species. I have a pretty good idea now about the general practice of repotting, winter protection, pruning, etc. But learning more about specific species is what many of us need. There are a lot of ”how to repot” videos, but much rarer to find what to think about when repotting a specific species. And finally, I find it increasibly useful when I you make a timely post of a video of the sort ”summer pruning” just as summer approaches. Very helpful!

Having fun is the first and last thing that is needed I think. Of course you need a tree of some sort and some basic tools. Experience comes with time, on styling as well as on horticultural level. So the next best thing to having fun is testing and seeing(learning). Great content that gives everyone the opportunity to get going!

This is one of the best "bonsai for dummies" videos out there. I live in Norway, and after watching many of your videos and others, I decided to start with bonsai myself. You say that you have some of your bonsai out in the winter. Here I live it can drop down to minus 25 degrees during some parts of the winter. What would you do to your trees if it got so cold? I believe I have to put them in a place where there is a bit warmer? Otherwise, love your videos.

This is such a grate video for beginners. I've had a bonsai for just over a year and defo neglected it in that time. Now summer has come and I'm sorting out the garden and house plants, I've gone down a bit of a beginners rabbit hole in the last 2 weeks for bonsai after find, in the greenhouse, some walnut saplings I'd potted up last year from the lovely squirrels stash in one of our flower beds, with the intention of doing bonsai with them. All the advices seems spot on and telling people to do their own research is always grate advice as everyone's environment and needs will be different and you can't cover all bases yourself.... I also love you saying don't worry about what others say. I've started following another bonsai channel (bonsai heirloom) and he has similar thoughts; the hobby is ment to be fun and relaxing. If it's working for you and you're enjoying it just go with it. At the end of the day if the trees look good who cares right.

You hit on the nail with Bonsai to have fun. I lot of local native trees, some tropicals and some Japanese trees like maples and pines. Here in SA these are the common bonsai trees, Celtis africana, Senegalia burkei, Olea europaea L. subsp. africana, Portulacaria afra, Adansonia digitata, Schotia brachypetala and few others that I still don't. Most our native acacia trees are used as Bonsai Material, grow easy from seed and cuttings. I'm experimenting with Sausage Tree (Kigelia Africana) have big tree in my yard and plant the seeds and they germinate easy, do well with root pruning and 3 thats starting to get nice fat trunks and they are not older than 3 years. As always love your vids. Keep it Up!

Really an excellent video, thank you! However, a few questions came to my mind during the video. When you said that you could do it with native trees, I immediately thought of my "grandpa tree". It's an "Acer pseudoplatanus" tree that started growing on my grandpa's balcony while I was caring for my grandpa until he died. I somehow want to believe that the life that was taken from him at that time has passed into this tree. That was about three years ago and I took the tree with me and have been looking after it ever since, it's grown quite a lot, but it's also looking boring and straight right now. The idea of turning the tree into an eye-catcher, apart from the fact that I'm always being asked why there's a tree on my balcony, would be really great especially because I could actively spend time with it. With that in mind, of course, I don't want the tree to suffer or, in the worst case, die. I would be extremely happy to know how I should best proceed to minimize the risk and how I can give it character, if anyone has some tips! And is a shallow pot really necessary, or can I leave it in the existing one? But now I will start with my Ficus Ginseng, which was the very first plant I received as a gift from my mother. Best wishes from Germany
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Ай бұрын
sounds like a valuable tree to you. so best not to take big risks with it. That species has fairly large leaves for bonsai. I think keeping it as a well pruned patio tree might be a better idea. If you wish to bonsai it, do you have a club nearby? Hands on in person might be safest

Hey! I recently discovered you and your channel and I love the content. Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🙏! If we do not have a garden to plant our trees, what would you recommend for their development? I understand bigger pots will help, but should we use organic soil or the classic anorganic mix of akadama, pumice and lava rock? For big pots, using that mix can be quite expensive. I have also seen at other KZfaqrs that they use baskets with this anorganic mix to further enhance the air flow. At a bonsai nursery from Germany from where I bought some young Itoigawas (2 years old cuttings), the advice I got was to replant the young plants every year until they reach 5-6 years. What is your opinion on the proper way to get a young tree (2-3 years old) to a proper bonsai material ?
@andreasweber1533
@andreasweber1533 Ай бұрын
In a container the substrate should be granular, else you won't get enough air to the roots. It doesn't have to be expensive material imported from overseas, though. A mix of crushed LECA and pjne bark may run 5 EUR for 10 liter, can be cheaper. If you absolutely want to use dense substrate like potting soil you need tall containers, creating a vertical gradient from wet to breathable. The point of baskets isn't so much in air flow but air pruning of the root tips, creating a nicely ramified root system and avoiding circling roots.

Younger trees doing well in part organic substrate. Add bit of mini pine bark chips. Personally don’t put young undeveloped trees in expensive medium. If you have 2 trees is all right but trust me… you end up with a lot of them, make your research and substitute medium in ratio suits your climate ( potting grit, perlite, molar clay) as you move trees to more delooed stage and smaller pots you may invest in expensive medium. Wish you luck.
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Ай бұрын
Tree nurseries typically grow the stock out in pine bark, compost or coco husk. I would say that for just explosive growth and developing trunks, a stable good quality organic would do the job too. Make sure you do not plant in large tubs straight away, but increase container size over time.

Not surprisingly, a lot of people were first introduced to bonsai after watching The Karate Kid. All or most of the trees in the Karate Kid movie(s) appear to be junipers, not of particularly high value, age, or complexity. A local bonsai club might have trees like this for sale, but it is far more enjoyable and rewarding to create your own from garden center material (lots of tutorials on YT). Probably can be achieved under two years realistically, although you can produce results like this in a couple hours with the right materials. A decent ceramic bonsai pot may be the most expensive part of it all. Whether you buy a pre-made bonsai or make your own I'd estimate a cost in the range of $25 to $75. It's tough to put a price on a starter bonsai because there are so many variables and factors, like where you live, how resourceful you are, what tools you have at your disposal, etc.
