See the how and the why of what we're doing now to ensure our food plots produce forage that's super attractive to deer and our strategies to hunt these plots throughout the season. For 16 years we’ve worked to improve the habitat and nutrition for white-tailed deer at The Proving Grounds. We’ve had proven success with getting scrawny Ozark deer to grow antlers and increase body weights that are above average in our area. These increases are simply a bi-product of healthy deer. By improving the native browse and adding high quality forage through food plots, we have enjoyed great hunting opportunities. When we plant fall food plots, we wait until there’s adequate soil moisture before planting. This is important if your planting then hunting public or private land. We use the Buffalo System to establish and maintain food plots. One of the principles of this soil health improvement system is to ensure the ground is always covered with both living and decaying and vegetation (mulch from previous crops). We never disc/plow and have minimal soil disturbance. This system conserves much more soil moisture than systems that include discing and/or plowing the soil. Therefore, using the Buffalo System requires much less precipitation to be productive! It’s like irrigating but much less expensive!
The Buffalo System isn’t a formula that can be used once and instant results occur. It is a scientifically sound system of forage management that will result in improving the soil’s moisture holding capacity and capturing nutrients from the air and soil. In addition, it attracts and benefits deer and other critters! This is an easy win - win. It absolutely has been a game changer here at The Proving Grounds. Remember, big antlers start in the dirt.

Planted my fall food plots 2 Saturday’s ago and that night we had a little over an inch of rain. The food plots have jumped and are looking great. It’s looking like it could be another great year of hunting! Good luck to y’all and stay safe during this deer season.

Thank you for all the knowledge you have shared. As a result of your food plot tips and buffalo system techniques, I have began implementing these strategies and can not wait to see the results. I only have a 10 acre plot of land but by using this system I am confident the deer population on my property will grow within the next couple years. Tomorrow morning is the early doe season here in Michigan and I cant wait to get out in the woods. Thanks again and good luck hunting your hit list this year.

Lot of farmers in mi plant winter wheat or rye after the 20th of September in Michigan. Grow zone 5a 5b. But no later than October 20th. Shocking how tall it gets by December. Lot of my hunting group plants September 15th.

Growing Deer TV is an extremely valuable resource for those of us who are trying to maximize hunting opportunities, yet also being good stewards of our land resources. My land is Ozark plateau ground with marginal cherty, flinty, clay soils just about everywhere. It's 80% forest and the rest overgrazed old pasture. I'm amazed at what I can get to grow on it with some of these techniques that Dr. Woods describes. The buffalo system is extremely intriguing to me. I'm going to commit several acres of my better ground to it next year. I've also got a lot of timber stand improvement work to do, to encourage my oak trees. I much prefer Dr. Wood's more holistic approaches to habitat management over some of the extreme "whitetail monoculture" approaches advocated by others. I can balance fields of healthy native grass and forbs, a healthy and well managed oak timber forest, and then mix in a little edge feathering, and a few strategic food plots, and still meet all my deer and turkey hunting goals. Thanks for this resource!

Dr Grant, when do you plant your eagle seed forage soy beans? I swear in one of the other videos you guys toured trophy rock and had the interns get the soy beans in before the expected hurricane rains. I looked that hurricane up and I think it said you guys would have received the rain in like early September. But in this video you’re talking about seeding the fall buffalo blend in late August, early September. Please let me know. Thank you so much for your time.

Have you tried a front mounted crimper with a no till drill pulled behind?

So would this buffalo blend work out well in southern Missouri if broadcasted in an area with no prior established food plot on a no till method? Im seeing that you just blended it in with your beans and im wondering if thise theory will work with any vegitation or is it specifically because its planted into the beans? Thanks.

Josef - Most forage crops won't work if they are broadcast into living vegetation that's not terminated or mature soon. There would be too much competition for the seedlings. You could terminate the standing vegetation and then broadcast the seed.

QUESTION.... I just purchased the fall buffalo blend. I am in south Louisiana so we are just about to plant. I am clearing a Plot in the woods this weekend and then I will be collecting soil samples. What is the ideal soil nutrient levels and PH for fall buffalo blend?

Also, could this be done without a drill? Would you just seed in to the standing beans then cultipack?
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV 4 жыл бұрын
A cultipacker may help the seed have contact with the soil, but it may damage the standing beans more than a drill. I'd rather simply broadcast into the beans just before or during a rain! - grant

Currently have a 2 acre clover plot I'm wanting to broadcast the fall blend into. Should I terminate the clover first or just mow it short?
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV 2 жыл бұрын
Max - if the clover is lush and growing, it will likely outcompete any new crop. Even if the clover is mowed, it has a strong root system that will allow it to regrow faster than the seedlings that don't have an established root system.

I would really like to use the Buffalo system. I can't justify a drill and crimper for only a couple acres. Do you have a good method without using the drill and crimper? Thanks, Jeff
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV 4 жыл бұрын
Jeff - I do broadcast and use a foot crimper in some smaller plots. The results aren't as good as with a no-till drill as most of the seed doesn't make great contract with the soil. - grant

Unfortunately Ohio requires that you tag the first deer before you can shoot another even if you have two tags in your pocket. Why????

Depends on the ambient temperature outside. If temps are in the refrigerator range (45° F or lower) then the deer will be alright sitting out for a few hours. Here in TX where temps in December can sometimes still be 80° F or higher I would try to recover the deer as quickly as possible.

I don't know why I keep watching. None of this will work on my mountain. Once the snow hits these deer are gone.
