This is what we did with two baby raccoons we found in the road... They were inside in dog crates at first, then in a big outdoor pen for two months. At 12 weeks, we opened the doors, and for a couple of months they would come around in the evenings for a snack. We took down the crate. Eventually they showed up less and less. Now we occasionally see them on our trail cams in the stream out back. They are happy and fat. They have had encounters with foxes and even chased off a bobcat! They are pretty tough and I think they will be fine. I would never want them to live as pets. They are wild and free.

There are literally soamy reasons why wildlife rehab requires trsinkng and permits. But the main reason is to permit and educate people who want to release them back home (when capable). It's so darn impossible not to get attached but these people are steadfast in their goal to return them back home, and it's so important. Seeing more of the releases than the ones not safe for release, makes me feel so happy

I am so grateful that there are amazing people like these who either rehabilitate hurt animals or foster babies who have lost their parents one way or another and then release them back into the wild when they're ready. I wish I could do that, but I know I don't have the heart for it. I would get too attached and would want to keep them. I did however rescue 2 stray cats. One, Snowball is a deaf cat and the other Cloud sadly passed away after he had been with me a few weeks short of 2 years because he had a heart condition. My vet figured he had the condition a while before I rescued him. We were in and out of the hospital for his last 3 weeks of life. It was heart breaking.

Drive slower, especially at night, look at roadsides more, and you will reduce the chances of hitting an innocent animal and ruining an entire animal families existence. Many times when you hit an animal with your vehicle in the Springtime, you leave a den of their babies to starve to death.
@mikoto7693
@mikoto7693 2 жыл бұрын
I do that, especially as most of the roads lead directly onto patches of urban woodland. Not even a pavement separating them. Regrettably I see a lot of roadkill. But if I have any say it won’t be me. I watch the side of the road as I drive. But, sometimes you can get caught utterly by surprise. It was about 9:15- 9:20 pm and I was driving home. The road cut through a park. One moment I was driving, the next, a huge brown dog just seemed to materialise out in front of my car. I hit the emergency brakes so hard the car skid a fraction of a metre for way less than a full second. I stopped with barely 5-7 centimetres to spare. He was almost touching the front of my car. Collar, but no leash and he just stood there. Frozen. The “deer caught in the headlights” effect for real. I’m in shock too, just staring at him. Then I hear the distressed wail of his human female owner who comes running up one of the park’s walking paths. “My dog?” She screams. (I get the impression she allowed the dog to run on ahead without her and heard the sound of my emergency stop and slight skid.) I somehow reply. “Dog not hurt. I somehow stopped in time.” She then rushed forward and checked him over since he was illuminated by by headlights. Then she put a leash on him. That’s when my brain seemed to reboot because I sharply said. “He wasn’t on a leash. He just ran onto the road right in front of my car desolate the bright lights of my headlights and the sound of the engine and tyres on the ground. He was out of your sight totally out of sight. You’re lucky I was skilled enough and saw quick enough to react before hitting him.” It didn’t go down well as she then walked him onto the pavement and asked why I was driving around so late at night anyway. (Maybe hoping I’d been drinking and she could get the cops on me.) I showed her the uniform I’m still wearing and my NHS ID tags I’m also still wearing. (This was first wave of COVID and only people with legit reasons could drive such as being an essential worker.) Though I did block my name with my finger. Eventually she sourly thanked me for emergency stopping and not hitting her dog, and I said I’d never hurt an innocent animal if I could avoid it and we went our separate ways. I was surprised she wasn’t grateful I’d saved her dog’s life. She seemed annoyed that I’d been driving there in the first place even though as a key worker going home I had more reason than her once a day exercise allowance under lockdown rules. Oh well the important thing was I didn’t hit him. That would have haunted me for months or years.

@@StargazerAPW You said to show this video to people who believe this world is horrible and should improve. And I'm saying this won't change many people's minds because sure people helped the foxes, but still other people killed their mother. That's kind of relevant, imo.

I always do soft release with birds. I continue to feed them while they learn from other birds how to get food. They watch them and learn. They let me know when they are 100% self sufficient by not coming to me for food anymore because they have it totally figured out and don’t need supplemental food anymore. Happens every time, and I am so happy about another successful release.

The best part of all of this is the care with the animals so they can continue being aware of humans, afraid of them. Humans can be good but oh boy we can be messy and those silly things deserve a good free life if possible.

To these foxes, the wild isn't "wild", but rather secure, bountiful, and full of possibility. Sometimes animals become part of our human family when they can't or don't adjust to the wild, but their real freedom exists there. They don't live as long, but their lives are full and complete every day.
