In this video I talk about how many watermelons to grow per plant. This question is a one that I get a lot. If they grower wants many melons then the answer I give is to let one melon per vine. This means if there are 5 vines then let the plant have 5 melons on the plant. The backyard farmer has the advantage to do this because they don't have large fields of watermelons. The melons will be smaller because it takes a lot of energy to produce this fruit. Now if the backyard grower wants to have larger melons they will need to prune the fruits or vines. I suggest going down to 2 melons per plant. I would let 2 vines carry 1 melon on each. The melons will definitely grow to a larger size. The last category is growing large melons for competition. These growers will grow one melon per plant. This will ensure that the melons grow to their max size. If backyard growers fertilize like farmers who grow large fields of melons, will not have to prune their melons.

If I may add something u wanna add that won’t take things over, marigold & basil. Marigold releases a scent in the soil that drives pest away. I never liked the look of marigolds but they have a ton of varieties. I got a BEAUTIFUL sugar & spice variety & another called Kilimanjaro white.. their heirloom varieties (which means no GmOs) I get em from baker creek!!

I'm in zone 6 and thought that maybe my climate wasn't suitable. But after seeing some of your techniques I'm going to try this thing again. Flowers or pollinators will help attract beneficial insects that will help control the insect pests and your wife will appreciate the beauty they bring to garden. Keep growing something tasty.

Good news and bad news if anybody wants to grow watermelons. Watermelons are arguably the hardest crop to grow. The good new is that if you accomplish it, you can give yourself a a pat on the back and consider it a major accomplishment. The biggest Carolina cross I grew was a paltry 80. A big watermelon, but small for a CC. I had much better luck growing cantaloupe which is a cake walk compared to watermelons. They can all but grow by themselves. BTW, the mites are there. You can see the squiggly lines snaking across a few of the leaves near the base of the plant. You can use all natural pest killers such as insecticidal soap so long as you do it early. If you have a bad infestation, you might have to use chemical pesticides. If you must so, do it as early in the growing season, before the fruit starts to grown. Unfortunately, that's typically when the pests come. You really need to check the plants every single day for pests since if they get a chance to multiply, you will likely lose your entire crop. When it comes to melons, most of the evil bugger live underneath the leave.

HEY, Krane!!! It is awesome that you grew an 80-pound melon. I want to grow one of those. The rabbits ate the melon plant. I check the leaves bout when thru grow all over. I can't check all of them. I'm worried I might break some vines.

A vacuum cleaner works for squash bugs. Also soap spray will kill them. Removes the protective oil from their bodies and causes them to drown from the water. Use the extra strength (extra degreasing kind) like Dawn 4X. And mix it fairly strong.

Ive heard guineas will eat squash bugs as well as ticks and dont bother the garden. My chickens ate the squash bugs , unless the neem/ hemp peppermint soap killed them? But they also ate my cherry tomatoes. Seen something I've never seen before this year. Sqaush bug eggs on a tomato leaf, Course I cut it off and threw it into a cup of dawn soap.

😊Thanks for the info. I threw in some watermelon seeds from an actual watermelon & I believe cantalope, or honeydew (not packaged) just to see what would happen - 😂they germinated and are growing. Hopefully they will produce watermelon and or cantalope. I'm afraid to clip the young fruit off because my peachtree & pear tree dropped all but one😕 I only have one peach that ripened and getting picked this evening. Right now I'm just playing around & experimenting for when I move to my own parcels. Right now I'm inundated with growing tomato plants -😬 I don't know what imma gonna do if they all produce tomatoes🤦‍♂️ I honestly didn't know seeds from store bought tomatoes would actually grow like crazy.
@GrowSomethingTasty
@GrowSomethingTasty 25 күн бұрын
HEY, Terry, that sounds good about the germination of the seeds. I understand you are afraid to cut the young fruit. This was the 1st year that my peachtrees had loads of fruit, but they fell off, too. It's that dang bug going in slicing in the fruit. I got the bags too late but was able to bag some on the tree. I will be ahead of this next year, but I'm using the clay to see if I can stop the bug. Those tomato seeds want to make more seeds, so they are growing like crazy. You can make tomato sauce.
