Roots can for sure be trimmed but in moderation and don’t trim entire plant at once. I’d start small and keep a close eye on it also keep in mind a plant grows it’s roots before anything so expect slow growth once trimmed

I had an Amazon sword when I first started my very first live planted tank five years ago that I still have set up I didn’t know much about planted tanks at all and the sword plant had holes in the leaves and ended up dying after 2 1/2 to 3 years because I didn’t know about root tabs yet I got a red melon a year ago and went overkill with the root tabs I put eight underneath it and it’s still growing like I just put them underneath it a year later💯🌱🐠💙🔥

Thank you! A very helpful video. I have two questions if you have time. My swords are growing tall, particularly the one in the centre of my 32 gal, directly under the light. But the older leaves are constantly turning brown and melting away - is it normal for the plant to cycle it’s growth this way or does it indicate a problem? Second, what is the plant in the far right in your tank? I was given a clipping of this plant and I don’t know what it is! Thanks!

I have 2 amazon sword and mine did alot of little runners. The trick with the runners is NOT to cut them from the steam. In fact, each "runners" can be naturally split in two. One on each side of the steam! And like you said, it's better if you let them grow alot of roots before removing them from the mother plant. After you split every runner from the mother plant, you can cut the steam. My main steam was 4 feet at the end 😅

I bought my swords About 3 months ago and were doing great with new growth on every plant. I have them planted at each side of the tank but the past few days the swords on the side with least flow have become all knurled and twisted, the swords on the side with the filter are doing great. All the plants have new growth, as far as i've tested all conditions are spot on, I use root tabs and CO2, the tank has been established for a long time. I'm really confused. Oh the new growth is twisted also. Any ideas? Great vid BTW.

Great video on a great plant. How often do you recommend to trim the outer leaves? I can’t seem to get the plant to grow past 5 inches, I think I may need to prune it more frequently. The only thing I’m missing other wise is Co2. Will increasing trimming encourage it to grow taller?
@TanksNFish
@TanksNFish 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Joey, In regards to trimming I really only do it once the most outer leaves start getting too big or looking a little old or damaged. I cant fully tell you what's wrong with your plant but what I can suggest you look into first if you haven't is your lighting. if the lighting is too strong sometimes it can cause plants to stunt in their growth among other issues. if thats not the case maybe look into the substrate ensure it can spread its roots comfortably but not too loose or too restricted. and last check nutrients make sure its getting its iron. increasing the trimming in a bushy plant can help but with amazons I really haven't noticed any increase in growth or leave generation. Love the comment hope this helped and again apologies for the delay in response Thanks for watching!

Question? I've had my amazon plant since about July 2020 and originally had it in a 20G tank where it was doing AMAZNG! I upgraded my tank to a 45G and transferred it over in Sept 2020. The 45 was not fully cycled so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with its damaged leaves. Im not really sure what to do now because the older leaves look a little brown and some have holes in them. However, I have noticed some new leaves growing from the center of the plant. Should I just trim the damaged leaves and add some root tabs to help growth? I have another plant that I transferred over that has the same issue, but still has new growth. Thanks.

Sorry for the delay. probably got minor damage to some roots or could've just been shock from switching into new water parameters my advice is let the new leaves grow a bit then trim the old ones down if you havent already let me know how they're doing and if they recovered. Great Video. I had a quick question. Is there anything useful I can do with the trimmed leaves. I hate to just throw them in the trash. I'm guessing I cant replant them (no roots). Would it be bad to burry them in the substrate so it cab be used as fertilizer as it decomposes?
@TanksNFish
@TanksNFish 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly I have never thought about it. I have never second guessed throwing them away or thought of keeping them. Just off the cuff i wouldnt advise to keep them in the tank you have to keep in mind decay causes ammonia which then turns to nitrite a spike in either with out it balancing quickly can harm the fish in the tank and cause a big imbalance. So without really diving too much into it I'd say toss it or start a garden if you dont have one and throw them in your mulch pile. Hope this answers your question somewhat. Thanks for watching!

I have two swords and a red melon and in my 75 gallon tank with a fluval plant LED light, eco complete substrate, fertilizers root tabs the whole nine yards, When I first got them they had huge adult leaves, which died off within weeks due to the change in water and a new environment. It’s been months I believe half a year, and I’m still left with a plant that has a ton of short leaves and just refuses to grow upwards. I really don’t understand, everything else in the tank is doing fine except for these. 10-12 hours of light per day as well as everything mentioned above. Tank is 83 degrees, PH of 7.5, water changes once a week.

I apologize for not seeing this sooner. Unfortunately I wont be able to diagnose your exact problem without me being there to physically view, Handle, Test all the necessary components but what I would personally do is ensure the fertz are not being placed directly touching the roots keep them about 4inches minimum away from the plant sometime they can damage the plant being right on the root system. Next lower the light time or maybe place it further away. I say that because in my experience a plant only grows tall in order to reach for sunlight but if the sunlight is right on it there's no need to expand up. Follow up with patience I know sometimes it can be frustrating seeing plants not doing what you want them to do and we then get in the habit of pulling them out and replanting them consistently refrain from touching the plant just leave it alone let it do its thing a plant can sometime be "shy" and not sprout for months on end sometimes its due to damaged root system from poor planting, Mishandling or constant moving so it'll take time for its root system to grow back before it finally starts producing beautiful leaves. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment again my apologies for the delay but I hope these tips help you out

Thanks for watching and it's a brilliant fact you brought up I should've covered in the video. But a dying leaf is only conductive to an aquarium plant if detached and decaying and you are not adding in any additional nutrients if a dying leaf is attached to a plant aquatic or not the plant spends time and energy trying to repair it. it doesnt begin absorbing it right away and can actually cause more harm then good especially if the plant is fighting an infection or malnourished. Because an aquarium already is receiving nutrients via fish waste and any additional you are putting in it's more beneficial to trim and remove all decaying matter vs. Letting it just sit and hope it absorbs it. Thanks again for watching much appreciated
