GRRM's Influence within Elden Ring Pt. 1

Күн бұрын

George RR Martin's contribution to the world-building of Elden Ring includes creating the mythos of the world; essentially the game's history prior to the arrival of the awakening of our Tarnished. I believe that some of Martin's previous works (A Song of Ice & Fire, Men of Greywater Station, A Song For Lya) greatly influenced the narrative he contributed to the world-building of Elden Ring.
In part one I discuss the similarities that Ranni the Witch has to Daenerys Targaryen, how braids are a notable feature in both Elden Ring, as well as ASOIAF, & an interesting connection within a few of Martin's works that feature a mind controlling fungi/hivemind.
What exactly did GRRM contribute to the narrative of Elden Ring?

The DLCs expanded backstory about Marika's rise to power and intent vs effect of her efforts makes her a painfully on the nose example of a classic GRRM character. GRRM wakes up in the morning and thinks of a new way for some sympathetic heroes journey protagonist to become the devil who makes a grim world even worse without ever intending anything but good things.

@@behurastudio that's a great connection! Although I didn't mention it in the video Tyrion's upbringing reminded me of Miquella's (albeit Bran Stark makes for a better Miquella connection). For instance both Tyrion & Miquella are born into Great Houses (Lannister & Erdtree), both Great Houses are associated with gold & lions, both individuals studied holy doctrine in their youth (Triple Rings of Light), both are born with a genetic medical conditions that affects their stature & both make up for their lack of strength with an abundance of knowledge. Tyrion also has a thought in ASOIAF that I think matches well with the narrative of Elden Ring: "It all goes back and back. To our mothers and fathers and theirs before them. We are puppets dancing on the strings of those who came before us, and one day our own children will take up our strings and dance on in our steads." In part 2 I discuss Targaryen stillbirths & how they are related to the sins of Valyria's past (ie Gogossos) in a similar way to how the Omen Curse continues to plague the Golden Order as the curse is possibly related to the atrocities carried out by Messmer, under the orders of Marika, against the Hornsent.

Yup. But I also think he was being kiddy with the “5000 years” thing. While I do think he wrote the ancient history predating our Tarnished’s return. I think the “5000” years thing is less literal and mainly figurative. Kinda like how we say “oh, I went to the shop last week to collect the milk” instead of explicitly stating something like “oh, I went to the shop at 11:54am on the Wednesday of the previous week to collect semi-skinned milk” With that said, yes. I believe he wrote a lot. In fact, playing through the game and its DLC, I couldn’t only help but feel Martins influence everywhere, as an ASOIAF fan. Literally everywhere. Even in the smallest instances such as how the Hornsent of the Tower view/treat the Formless Mother compared to how Omens of the basegame view/treat the Formless Mother. Little differences/nuances like that remind me of how in ASOIAF, the Lord of Light is one of the primary Outer Forces in the Lands that is viewed completely differently depending on different cultures of Westeros’ interpretation of it. It’s beyond typical “LovecraftHorror/Aliens”. At that point, the Cosmic force itself becomes a part of and ingrained in the history and tangibility of the Lands itself, and religions based on differing beliefs are built soon a singular concept. Another example would be the Greater Will, with the new revelations we got in the DLC. That’s something that Martin does incredibly well and that is present in even the tiniest instances in Elden Ring. Of course, the biggest and most obvious example of his fingerprints would be the convoluted and intricate family tree, their interwoven relationships, and their individual and relative political significance. But I’m mainly talking about the smaller details here ! lol

I completely agree, a lot of the story many of the lore community have crafted is full of holes the could easily be patched if it was told as ASOIAF. Ranni killing godwyn is easily explained by the fact that he was likely to become next elden lord to whoever was picked to be the empyrian to succeed Marika. It also explains why Malenia could not be miquella's consort even if she really wanted and someone like radhan had to be picked after godwyn death.

@@christopherlyndsay8611 perhaps it’s a fusion of both- if you believe Godwyn is a dragon, then sure, tha castle is destroyed by a dragon. If you think death root is weirwoods, then sure, the castle is infested with weirwood roots, like Harrenhal. But/and Stormveil is the seat of the storm lord like Storms End and both castles semantically share a name end/veil both suggest a place that acts as protection and shelter from the storm, which comes on from the sea. Harrenhal is in the river lands and is named after the king who commissioned it. Storms End and Stormveil represent man’s overcoming of natural phenomena. Stormveil is the current seat of the golden lineage, Godfrey, Godwyn and Godrick. Their lineage derives from the power of the crucible, married to gold (royal family) and the singular golden tree. In aGoT the house Baratheon are ruled by three patriarchs, the golden stag king, Robert, the dark fire king Stannis and the green king Renly. They are all different expressions of two legendary figures, Durran Durrandon (Godsgrief) the founder of their line and of Storms End and also of the historical archetype of the green man in Robert and Renly from Garth the Green of the reach. The combination of green man figure and crown wearing stag combine in the imagination to form the image of a godly tree between the two. A human that is horned a wreathed in gold is a golden tree man, much the same as we see from the scions of the Golden Bough. As for Stannis he represents the threat of winter and the Holly King vs Renly’s summer and Oak King archetype. Between them we should think of the natural cycle of the changing of the seasons across the three brothers lives; but like Westeros and the Lands between, death, or life has been disrupted and we are stuck in a perpetual Autumn with Winter (death) always coming but unable to arrive and pass and lead to new life. More to this point Godfrey represents the strength of Oaks and the fertility of nature, he is the progenitor of the Golden Order. Godwyn being a dragon represents time, death and the gnawing at the roots of Yggdrasil, Nidhogger the dragon. He also represent the sacrificial sun symbol as part of the turning of the season but the cycle was halted mid progres, in that way he also represents the broken seasons. Godrick represent history, genealogy and family through interbreeding. He is called the runt of the litter by an elitist noble but Godrick best represent the benefit of cross pollination of cultural values and strengths being part numen, part tarnished, part dragon and part crucible/tree. Grafting in wine cultivation is the act of using more hardy and adaptable root stock to support and be adjoined to a better flowering grape vine. In this way both halves make a better whole. That’s one of the core message of the game.

The naming conventions, the sci-fi elements (carian magic/outer gods), how the central drama is all about family struggles, and now with the DLC, the cycle of violence turning well intentioned saints into villains. It has always been obvious, but due to the low exposure to literature, it just flew over most peoples heads.

@Ontos99 Hey Ontos! I thoroughly enjoyed SotE, I thought it was definitely challenging, but overall a great experience! The lore of Marika's origin added more depth to her actions & Messmer was an excellent addition to the family; in the future I hope to devote a video to him. My favorite new addition was Metyr, as well as Count Ymir. Ymir states "I, too, am a glintstone sorcerer. We study the stars, and examine the life therein. Long ago, we began as stardust, born of a great rupture far across the skies. We, too, are children of the Greater Will. Is that not divine? Is that not sublime? ...and yet, none can fathom its implications, its utter brilliance!" While Hyetta, from the perspective of the Three Fingers, shares "All that there is came from the One Great. Then came fractures, and births, and souls. But the Greater Will made a mistake. Torment, despair, affliction...every sin, every curse. Every one, born of the mistake." The rupture (break/breach) mentioned by Ymir could be the same fracture (break/fragment) mentioned by Hyetta. I found this all to be very interesting. The most challenging boss for me was Commander Gaius, outside of Miquella's consort of course. I liked many of the new incantations & thought the new areas were beautiful (Cerulean Coast, Jagged Peak, even Midra's Manse). I still have much to look into though, as I still am left with many questions. For instance the snake skin shed at Bonny Village. The word bonny, possibly originates from the Old French bon (good), can be defined as: beautiful, healthy, & placid. The term bonny can also refer to a healthy baby, especially within Scottish culture. Could snake skin be in reference to Messmer's origin (abbyssal serpent), or is it linked to Eiglay (possibly related to Rykard's expedition to the Land of Shadows where he met Tanith)? While on the subject of snakes I am also still puzzled about the veiled painting of Rykard in Volcano Manor. Again I have many mysteries still to unravel, but overall I enjoyed the Land of Shadow. I would love to hear your thoughts & experiences with SotE as well, especially in regards to lore.

Interesting video, really good insights! Some additions: Minor Erdtrees wasnt planted near Catacombs, Catacombs were built near the root network of the Erdtree. Also trees are not fungi and they also get nutrients from the soil therefore the dead. It doesnt have to be fungi, neither does the Weirwoods and its network. Its just plants, thats how they work. Great video tho!
@positivecontacts
@positivecontacts Ай бұрын
@@formatomi Good point- you could argue for this distinction though- did George intend for the Weirwoods to be just trees, or magic trees that behaved in a similar way to fungus? It’s true that trees can grow in networks, but the networks of tree communicate and share nutrient resources through a web of fungi roots that grow between the roots of trees and soil called the mycorrhizae. In this way the tree and the funghi work in symbiosis to create a hybrid life form that is the whole network joined. GRRM extrapolates on this idea saying what if the trees are vampiric and accept blood sacrifice, what if the funghi can take over living organisms, what if the network could store human memories and thoughts like a net, an interweb? What if a human could tap into this power, what histories and knowledge could be gained by seeing the world through the eyes of a tree and each other tree in the network. What if the trees (which is what we make books from) are a metaphor for the repository of all human knowledge etc… As you correctly said; catacombs were built around greatree roots to feed the ash of cremation and whole bodies back into the Erdtree, so that there corporeal and spiritual selves would blend and be added to the whole. Minor erdtrees are thought to be grown from seeds of the Erdtree which only appeared after the Erdtree faced a threat to its existence that is never specified in game. Living jars are used to collect the dead above ground and fertilise the soil at the bases of minor erdtrees. Golden seeds are the latest wave of seeds shed by the golden Erdtree during what we can assume was the shattering, long after the original Erdtree was gone. The golden seeds remind us that only what can grow from an illusory tree are illusory seed that grow illusory trees. All the minor erdtrees are corporeal and of a diffent generation, hinting as to the original appearance of the Erdtree before it was destroyed, by what I suspect was either Gransax’ Bolt or the Gloam-Eyed Queens vision of flame.

@sclafantasy I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to watch! I completely understand your thought process; both characters seek a new age that greatly differs from those that have preceded it. Now that we have a conclusion to Miquella’s arc I am excited to see Daenys conclusion in ASOIAF, outside of HBO's adaptation of course. Another interesting connection that you could make between Ranni’s family & the Starks of Winterfell is how they both utilize direwolves. Albeit the amount doesn't match up perfectly (6 red wolves, 5 members of Radagon's Carian family) I felt like Radagon gifting the red wolves to his children mirrored how Ned Stark gives each of his children a direwolf.

What’s ur opinion now that we found out messmer is not only the child of Marika but seems to be heavily implied her first child along with Melina. The father also seems to be radagon as well. Where does your misbegotten theory come into place now ? I’m very curious and interested in what u think. because whenmarika become a god apparently she needed a lord to usher her in , and it maybe could have been radagon we know now Mesmer and melina were marikas children and I know I said before it’s seems to me in my opinion their her first children ever and it was with radagon so could this have been way before his marriage with renalla and marika and radagon were one and together before? Very confusing would love to hear ur thoughts great vid as always

@samsalah5611 the DLC has altered many of my older theories, especially my thoughts on Radagon & the Carians. Eventually I will condense all of my thoughts into a video, but I am still piecing everything together. An interesting incantation added lore-wise was the Multilayered Ring of Light, an incantation of those who served Miquella; this light-ring incantation was cultivated by a tradition separate from Golden Order fundamentalism. The two related incantations we gain prior are Radagon's Rings of Light & Triple Rings of Light, which tell a story of Miquella & Radagons relationship (the only real connection we see between Radagon & his children). Multilayered Ring of Light is rewarded upon defeating the Spirit Misbegotten Crusader in the Stone Coffin Fissure. Specifically it is the crusader variant, this variant of the Misbegotten is the same as the one that wields the Golden Order Greatsword, which was forged by Radagon. Radagon led the Golden Order crusades into Liurnia. Plus, the Stone Coffin Fissure is located on a peninsula in the southernmost tip of the Cerulean Coast region; while the area most associated with Misbegotten in the Lands Between is the Weeping Peninsula (both peninsulas being associated with the Misbegotten, as well as a scaly variant using the Rusted Anchor for a weapon). The Spirit Misbegotten Crusader is found near a small cave with putrescence. Congealed Putrescence oozes from stone coffins & is what remains of the impure lives kept within the stone coffins. Interestingly the Albinauric Bloodclot states that Albinaurics are lifeforms made by human hands. Thus, many believe them to live impure lives, untouched by the Erdtree's grace. Congealed Putrescence resembles the Silver Tear Husk; the Silver Tear makes mockery of life, reborn again and again into imitation, perhaps, one day, it will be reborn a lord. At the core of a silver tear is a larval tear & the larval tears in the DLC appear differently than those found in the base game. The new form of larval tear we find in the DLC states they're exceptionally rare creatures that burgeons from spiritgraves and lives only a fleeting existence; neither flesh nor spirit, but something in between. The DLC variant is more incorporeal in appearance, just like the shadow men. Radagon also has a shared appearance as his left arm is also a shadow. Radagon is Marika, that we know for sure. Either Marika used a mimic tear to create Radagon, or Radagon existed prior using the power of mimicry himself to become Marika; these are questions I still struggle with, especially with the introduction to St. Trina. Needle Knight Leda states that St. Trina is Miquella's other half, that her love for him is boundless..."or perhaps her feelings go beyond even that." To me this reflects Radagon & Marika's relationship as he became her second lord consort & they even procreate by copulation. The Spirit Misbegotten Crusader is located in the Stone Coffin Fissure which is also where Miquella discarded St. Trina. Radagon & St. Trina share many connections as they are both the other halves of Marika & Miquella respectively. Not to mention the association with flowers, Miquella & St. Trina have lilies, while Radagon has the bloodrose (Radagon's Icon). Speaking of flowers the Shadow Sunflower are veiled in shadow and covered in impenetrable thorns, being suffused with profound holiness-much akin to Radagon. Radagon's Icon features mimicked bloodrose that are white displaying their artificial nature (personal speculation) & the roses lack thorns. Plus their is also the fact that Radagon is deeply associated with the crucible, as you mentioned both Messmer & Melina being seemingly the children of Radagon. Messmer & Melina both are associated with fire, just as many of Radagon's children are (Rykard & Radahn). Radagon has ties to Fire Giants (Giant's Red Braid). Miriel uses terms like "skeleton" & "giant stature" when speaking about Radagon's statue. Fire Giants & Astrologers were once neighbors on the Northern Mountaintops. Rennala is possibly a descendant of the Astrologers & joins Radagon in union at the Church of Vows. With all of my current research into GRRM it all reminds me of the title A Song of Ice (Astrologers) and Fire (Giant). I am still in the discovery process though, still many unsolved questions.

@@EldenTales excellent thoughts/theory as always what puzzles me is the timeframe on the birth of Messmer/Melina if they are the oldest which I believe them to be I wonder if they were born when the current now known land of shadow was once part of the lands between and they grew up during the start of marikas godhood and the start of the golden order then later on in his life marika sent Messmer to purge the land and locked away/sealed the shadow land from the lands between causing the giant land mass to be empty in the middle of the map do u think this was way later during the golden order reign post or pre Godfrey era, it says in a item or remembrance I think it was commander gaus that messmer and gaus were like older brothers to the lion and the lion obviously symbolising radahn even though radahn and messmer r biological half siblings

@positivecontacts
@positivecontacts Ай бұрын
@@allthe1 I agree to an extent, but we see historical note of Godwyn being more active in a variety of roles and events that suggest he was more of a warrior figure with the allure of a god- golden boy is so passive and the object of compulsive attraction, Miquella rings more true for Golden Boy as he is a minor, effete and literally compels people. But Miquella is also a bit of a Bran Stark to Radahn’s Hodor situation, yeah I said it- Miquella reanimating Radahn at the gate of divinity is a Hodor “hold the door” moment at the cave of weirwoods, where Bran was close to ascending to “godhood”. Maybe the tarnished are the white walkers back from the dead….? Too much tinfoil? Godwyn as Joffrey just doesn’t ring true. Godwyn as the prince who was promised and friend to dragons shares the most in common with Rhaegar. If an eclipse is the sun and moon mating, Targaryens are often considered as black-suns, then Rhaegar and Lyanna could be symbolically seen as an eclipse of the sun by the moon- similarly, Godwyn the Golden (sun) and Ranni, the lunar (moon) Princess, were in eclipse metaphorically when Ranni performed the night of the Black Knives, but instead of making new life, they made new death.
