I have 15 carrier traps in this type aircraft. It was a wonderful example of a well built plane from the Grumman iron works. Lost four friends in 1970 in a horrible crash off the coast of Luzon, P. I. It was during night ops in very bad weather. They didn't stand a chance after losing the entire electrical system, and the port engine.

Sweet sound to hear those radial engines run. especially on a STOOF {S-2). Attached to a STOOF outfit (VS-35) when i was in the USN 1966 to 1972 as a mechanic. One odf the best times of my life. We were attached to the USS HORNET CVS-12.

My dad spent 28 years flying USN ASW aircraft (from S-2b - S-2g (till they retired her)), he was part of the west coast stand up for the S-3, then moved to flying helicopters (SH-2, H-3, SH-60 series), before retiring with nearly 43 years as an USN aviator. He said he always loved the 'stoof' but it was a little cramped as she got older and they put more stuff in her. He said it always flew well just was harder to get into... LOL

Heard them flying over daily (as well as night) when living in The Hague in the 1960's just in line with the runway of Valkenburg Navy Airport, the "Stuf" had that specific shattering sound where the prop tips reach the speed of sound similar to the Harvard Trainer. As mentioned above this aircraft is not airworthy so this sound cannot be re-produced just by taxi runs around the airport. On You Tube there are some clips of Trackers or Traders in the US, even of our own MLD, where it can still be heard.

All I can tell you is that hand hold saved my life in Jan.1966 off coast of Korea when we were moving a stud by hand alongside the starboard deck edge when a pill of snow broke loose and hit me in the face just as I was reaching for that hand hold, I lost my footing but held on to that hand hold if not I would have fallen in the cat walk and since there was snow everywhere probably would have slid off catwalk and over the side ! What are they doing with the props?
@32tfs
@32tfs 2 жыл бұрын
I think you mean rotate the prop manualy before starting the engine? It is oil. When the engine is cold, the piston rings don't quite seal the cylinder and oil leaks past and pools in the bottom cylinders. If the engine is started with oil above the pistons (looking from the centre), severe damage can occur as oil is not compressible, causing an hydraulic lock, and the piston can be prevented from rising all the way to the top of the cylinder. "Pulling the prop through" enables the oil to drain back past the rings into the crankcase. What you can't see is that, since it's a rotary, the pistons rotate around the crankcase as the prop is pulled. If the engine has been resting for a long time, the spark plugs might also be removed from the cylinders at the bottom to enable oil to drain out too.

1 engine was technically out of order at that time. Starting that one engine and folding the wings was for show. 20 retired Dutch Navy people attended the show. By the way this Tracker is not airworthly. Thanks for watching, stay safe.
